Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

We need an upgrade in just about every position - but who we need is mostly not available to us.Two real good signings for next year but losing two of our best almost negates it. How we let that slip is mind boggling.
Including the coach. We need a new coach now. Not a interim coach for the rest of the year and then new coach. It needs to start now so the new coach can be prepared for next year and who he wants to keep. Why wait when we know there is going to be no improvement.

Plenty agree. From what I have observed at this club and other clubs a new coach at a failing club often comes with a level of false hope only to discover the same problems the previous coach faced - unless of course the roster is vastly improved.

We can not go on like this anymore, i feel that the young players we have high hopes for are not putting their hands up saying pick me.
other clubs have 19-20 y/o players that are so far in front our so called young talent.
we need to go out and purchase top line players even paying overs, otherwise i can't see anything changing for another 3-5 years.

Where are the juniors though mate? Most of our "development players" are not even local kids. They have come simply as we offered more than their local teams. So far, that strategy has worked with Stefano...and failed on every other dev player. One from about 12 past few years.

Madden is a Newcastle junior who we offered a 3 year deal, full development time and an NRL spot.

Meanwhile, an actual junior in Lachlan Ilias was let go and told he was not up to it.

So, where is the plan for juniors you mention?
I will probably get howled down but I think even Stefano has been down on form this season prior to his injury.

I can't say I blame him because he is young and can't do it all on his own and the club and supporters have probably put unreasonable expectations and pressure on him.

Now he is injured and has lost valuable development and game time, worst of all the opportunity he may have had to spend valuable time around the State of Origin Squad is most likely gone for this year at least.

I can understand young players wanting to move on from here when their development is hampered by not being given opportunities and if and when they are given opportunities, the expectations and pressure placed on them is far too great.

Players who I would be calling today
Simms x 2 years. Tough go forward
lodge x 2 years , yes I know BUT. We need his type player
Bird x 3 years. Solid player back row / Centre
Duffy x 2 years Fullback / Centre
Aitken / Centre
add Appi and Papai
we can mix the rest around these type guys
Straight out the garbage bin.

Need to go for realistic targets

Aitken on one edge would be fine
Dufty > Laurie

I would avoid Sims based on age, but understand why we might have a crack.

Need speed desperately to, we need to fast track a couple of 19 year olds or bring it in from outside.
Dufty is one of the worst fullbacks in the game. You didn’t watch his game this weekend did you?

It’s criminal expecting a 21yo to be forward leader in the NRL.

It might not be coaching, but it's recruitment. Madge has always liked effort players and has been the coach now for long enough that these guys are his. So the question has to be asked, if they were initially his "type" of player, why have they stopped responding? If they weren't his type of player in the first place, then why re-sign them or sign them? Its a massive failure in there somewhere and he can't be blameless.
Funny you should mention effort players because some immediately came to mind.

Hard to believe we show players like Elijah Taylor, who would spill their blood and guts on the field for the team the door.

Personally I feel that he was treated badly and when he was called upon towards the end of his last season with us, I thought he played exceptionally well after being overlooked for selection for some time.

I know some will say that he played his guts out trying to get a contract extension as some players do at the end of their contract, but players like him are true effort players who very rarely let you down and I believe that recent changes to the game would have suited him down to the ground, although his age would be a factor now.

Will always have a soft spot for those effort players like Elijah Taylor, Corey Thompson and Liam Fulton just to name a few who always gave their all.

Who is responsible for the Tamou purchase? Wasn't he bought to provide leadership?
Pascoe brought him in along with Roberts Madge wasn’t present when negotiations were happening same as when he went to training and Daine was there first day he didn’t even know who he was and why he was there Pascoe making those moves without his knowledge

Not defending Madge btw but Pascoe shouldn’t be doing these decisions

Games like that on the weekend make the prices of players we wish to recruit go up whilst the value of players that we'd like to offboard early plummet.

2022 was always gonna be hard, but this really hurts.

I'm sure that things will improve.

People should listen to @GNR4LIFE more often. We were always a bottom 4 team this year and we needed a miracle to perform above that. The bookies had us dead last.

We also have injuries to a large number of players.

Next year is looking a little better but to improve a lot we needed to retain Luc and Tuilagi. Next year is not looking better so far.

We will improve though. I still don't see this as being anywhere near as bad as other years. We don't have top quality juniors to lose. We have already lost our quality edge backrow pairing. The only way to go from here is up.
