Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Jordan Miller is only 18....So much for all our up and coming "stars" not one made the U19 SOO teams....not a single player...disappointing
Plenty of good players missed out on selection. Our boys picked for NRL wouldn’t have been considered. I think the original captain got withdrawn on Tuesday because he will make his nrl debut for Roosters. You would be amazed how political the selection table is on those age group squads. I have seen some absolute guns miss out on selection.

Oh well, look on the bright side, if it has been determined that they are all shit then we won't have to worry about other teams stealing them.

This is largely because Storm have invested heavily into pathways systems for North Brisbane and Sunshine Coast due to minimal rugby league talent available in Victoria, not anything to do with the coaches preference for where a player is from. Additionally at that level Bellamey has very little to do with recruitment.
Melbourne is forecast to have a larger population than Sydney by 2031-32. The NRL should ask hard questions of the Storm about what the club has done since 1998 (over a quarter of a century) to increase league talent in Victoria.

Yet to be determined
Hi mate got a question for you

I was talking to a mate about Sheen's coaching and about how he use to attack at speed and strip numbers off the defence

The question is why it's impossible for the tigers to do it now is it the coaching or the players don't have the skills?

Sheens back in his first stint always had lots of decoy runners and multiple players in motion around the ball that caused the best defence a head ache. Granted he had Hogo,Prince, Benji and Farah pulling the strings

The players IMO.

You the saw immediate difference in Parra's attack when Moses came back. Its having that touch of class that you really can't put your finger on or definitively define what they do different, they just do something that can't really be coached that ignites the attack. It's subtle, so you imagine it can be coached, but it can't. Coaching can improve it for those that have it, but if you don't have it you don't have it.

That's just my opnion.

Horseshit ! There was an emphasis on athletes about 10-20 years ago , totally changing the way players were coached and the training they did .
A lot of players coming through are supreme athletes , but don’t have the fundamentals.
Not to mention there’s was a huge surge in basketball in the late 90s and early 00s which helped ball skills , vision , movement etc.
Most elite sports have become too specialised, and as such a lot of kids arnt getting benefits of playing multiple different sports .
By the way this isn’t just me talking , there’s heaps of books about it , and studies , seminars etc.
The professional age , and surge in money , has created bubbles like AA for basketball youths , and way too much games , where the focus is on winning , and less on training .
Back in the day kids trained 2-3 times a week and 1x1 hr game . Now a lot of kids are playing multiple games a week with only a few training sessions .

My understanding is the Storm do put quite a bit of money into the Thunderbolts pathways. They have unearthed some talent through it. Most recently Sua Faalogo and previously Dean Iremia, Young Tonumaipea, Richie Kennar, Jamayne Tanou-Brown and a current and former Tigers Fonua Pole, Kelma Tuilagi and Mahe Fonua. Prior to the Storm's existence (as far as i am aware) there were no players out of Melbourne and certainly no pathways for players.
The reality however is that the Storm are not responsible for increasing league talent in Victoria. It is undoubtedly beneficial to both the club and code if they are to do so however it is not a requirement of them being granted an NRL license nor for them to be a successful rugby league team.

I live in Melbourne, smack bang in the center where the F1 track is in beautiful Albert Park with multiple huge sports fields and other sporting facilities all close by - I walk the fields most weekends through-out the year and let me tell you not once in a decade have i ever seen a rugby league match being played, at any level junior or adult. Union yes, AFL of course, even bloody Gaelic football and frisbee have league comps lol, but never league.

it just doesn't happen here, and if it does its in the outer outer suburbs where to be quite frank its Sunday league ability at best. you'll never unearth talent from that.

We just don't play it here, still after 25 years. and its a massive shame because i do think a lot of Melburnian's actually love watching the game. They just dont want their kids to play it/no where central for them to play...

Disagree. You can't coach a Brad Schnieder to ignite a teams attack.

Coaching can only help improve the players that have it.
In some ways it is coaching . But not in first grade or nrl . If the foundations weren’t laid in youth , then it’s pure catchup at that point .
It’s why qld produced more halves of nrl quality that stuck in the early 00s- teens . They had better structures in place around development and skills .
I think nswrl / nrl have standardised these practices now . But that gap existed for 20 odd years .

It’s GPS in Victoria . It’s played in schools mostly .

It's crazy that the only way we can keep our juniors is to promise them top 30, and a clear unobstructed path. Yet Panthers and Canberra can stockpile juniors and only promote them to top 30 when they're ready.

Canberra had CNK as a top 5-6 fullbacks at that time, and others like Savage and Rapana, but still sought out the best 18 year old fullback in the state last year to boost their talent stocks. They have talented halves in first grade yet also signed one of the most in demand halves in Sanders. And these guys are happy to bide their time and earn their shot at first grade.

Compared to us where we throw them straight into premature top 30 contracts and into the top 17 for first grade and hope they all swim.

Other clubs have this competitive drive, players busting their ass and patiently waiting for their shot. Sharks are another great example of this. Even the dogs have signed top players for every single age group, no promises for anyone. Having highly competitive teams in every division and let everyone fight it out, and when the cream rises to the top they promote them as needed.

Everything we do is just so amatuer. Signing good players for first grade and NSW Cup is not blocking pathways, it's creating meaningful pathways and a will to succeed.
The Raiders announced the signings of three top-tier juniors (from other clubs) just yesterday, each declared to have a clear path to the NRL.

The contrast between our approach and that of successful NRL clubs like theirs lies in their well-established systems and rosters, which have long effectively supported the development and integration of young players into the NRL. This makes their strategy more appealing for potential recruits and appears more promising for future success.

Their statement highlights their method to recruiting and successfully developing young talent, which reflects confidence in their systems. They also emphasise their ability to nurture these players and elevate their games to the next level.

"We're really excited to have Ethan, Myles, and Savelio join us in 2025, and we know they have the talent and drive to take their games to the next level," stated Raiders recruitment manager Joel Carbone on Thursday.

"We've demonstrated that our club provides opportunity and a clear pathway to the NRL. We look forward to their arrival in 2025 and wish them all the best for the remainder of their seasons with their current clubs."

Our player management strategies differ from other clubs due to our current circumstances. If we continue to improve overall, with the roster being a key component, our player management will evolve accordingly.
