It was more apt to compare us to the Bulldogs two years ago; presently, we're probably more comparable to the Eels. The Bulldogs have released nearly their entire team and have had a full salary cap to utilise, unlike us.
They’ve strategically hired a former Penrith assistant coach and several premiership-winning players who have served under him to create a solid foundation. These investments took most of their cap space and as a result, they’ve been forced to recruit other players to fill out their roster. However, the crux of their successful rebuild isn’t just replicating the Panthers blueprint but also benefiting from significant financial backing from Arthur Laundy IMO.
One size doesn’t fit all.
Benji has his own vision and different limitations. Until we can land one or two more high calibre players (or until our juniors mature), we should focus on acquiring players who are relentless and drive standards and team morale - akin to how Corey Thompson was for us. I l don’t mind some of the suggestions being thrown around, such as Hopgood or Horsburgh as while they’re not superstars they seem to fit this mould.
