Most americans new to australia think that you are complimenting them if you call them a seppo,just don't explain it too them as they can get upset
 
A couple of American tourist were down Circular Quay one day, when an Aussie began small talk with them, after hearing the American accent.

The local asked the Yanks what they thought of Australia. One Yank responded: I think it’s the bowels of the earth, to which the Aussie quickly replied: And you’re just passing through. Go Weststigers!

FYI: Daddy [Stephen Isdale] coached his son, halfback Alex, in HM last year. The son appears to be blocked to progress short term.
Stephen Isdale to coach HM again, but now has another son Iszak Isdale, who is a fullback/centre [mostly-I think], Ashton Large, and halfback Curtis Lakeman----whose dad, Nathan Lakeman, is now coaching Wests SG Ball. Keeping it in the family to coach beyond the paddock.
 
Mentioned him a few times before but Mason Teague is bloody good lock. Playing well again today. Contracted at Phins for another year but somewhat down the pecking order there with the rise of Plath. Penrith junior that might ne keen for a return to Western Sydney. I think he offers just as much as Hetherington at probably half the price.

Modern halves are far bigger and more aggressive. Theyd pummel the line as would the three quarters. It’d be 6 old school forwards v the whole team.

I can see that but also the alternative. The modern forwards are as fit as hell as you say but for the modern game. Remember the drill the Canterbury did last year as punishment? That was a training drill in the 60’s a totally different type of fitness was required - forwards for example needed physical strength to endure the scrum contest but a lot less fast endurance but were not being able to be replaced. Modern forwards have never packed a scrum like the 60’s and would struggle with the strength, endurance and the continual contest. Ball security was much more important.

As I said a different game to today
 
Try to get Montoya (or similar experienced/depth winger) on a 1 year deal plus 1 year club option and then go hard at Sam Stonestreet come November 1 (for 2026). Stonestreet should be playing NRL week in week out and may look for an opportunity if Sharks can't guarantee it.

Not very experienced in NRL …How many Top 30:spots WT gunna open up on the roster ?

Yeah that is true, however these guys are professionals. They’d train for this example and adapt quickly. The guys from the 50’s were not as multifaceted as todays elite athlete is. The block plays alone would result in a lot of tries.

I didn’t think he’d come back here but he’s another good coach off the table should Benji continue to struggle next year.

I don't fundamentally disagree that Brisbane has a good roster, but in what world does Jock Madden get picked over Luai, Galvin or Fainu? He's Brisbane's third best half and would be our fourth.

I’m not so sure the modern players would adapt as quickly as you assume.

In the old days there was a genuine contest for the ball and the forwards spent a huge amount of time practising scrummaging.

Hookers were selected to win the ball. There were not many hookers in those days that were much in the ball running stakes, but that didn’t matter. Their job was to win the ball and defend in the middle.

I read Ian Walsh’s biography years ago. The shenanigans that went on in the scrums in those days was unbelievable. Those old timers were tough as nails and they knew how to play dirty. What’s more, the old-time front rowers had been practicing scrummaging since they were boys.

I don’t believe that a modern pack could just rock up after a few practice sessions and compete against a quality pack from the old days. I don’t believe they could compete.

The reason I emphasise scrums is that if you cannot win your share of the ball, you would struggle. Especially with unlimited tackles.

This was brought home to me as a small boy watching the Magpies v Balmain at LO. Our first hooker (Kelly) was unavailable and the replacement was getting a bath in the scrums. It didn’t take Balmain long to see what was happening. Balmain started kicking for touch, we would get the head and feed, and they would win the ball. Rinse and repeat up the field. When they got into our red zone, they held the ball (unlimited tackles) until they scored.

It is difficult to win a game of footy without the ball.

If I was the coach of an elite team from the old days versing a team of modern day players, that is the tactic I would use.

The modern day players would be favourites to win, but the old times might get close if they could starve them of the ball.
