Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Jake is a very solid first grader.

He has played 56 first grade games and is still only 23 believe it or not.

I just think as a club we've often had an inclination to grow very creative dummy halves and so the simpler games of up and down hookers, such as Liddle and Simpkin, haven't been traditionally prioritised.

If there was no TDS or Haywood on the horizon, I'd say Jake would still be 2nd drop here behind Api.
Except for the first sentence I sorta agree.
But Simpkins was average here, I have never seen a hooker get sacked at the line as often as Jake, 3 times in one game. That has to be some kind of record. His decision making and delivery was slow, He had no idea on how to create space and time at the line. and a centremetre out from the opposition line is wear he got exposed.
I thought Lids was better but his thing was speed and injuries.

Jake left Tigers at the age of 22.

I'd argue that any young hooker is going to have a series of deficiencies at such a young age.

Tallyn for example, who's 20, a similar age to when Jake was playing bit-part roles for us, has issues with service (at times), first-up contact and reliability on the goal line (as well).

That's just part of being a young footballer in the middle at NRL level.

Simpkin is no world-beater, but he's a good first grader who will play over 100 NRL games in my estimation. That is a damn good career, regardless of circumstance, if he gets there.

I've been told that WT see Latu as an out and out first grade half but not with the same ceiling as Galvin.

the pursuits of DCE and Reynolds indicate that they're trying to get a mentor in for the short-term to help him with increasing the height of said ceiling. for that reason, I don't think you'll see us pursue the likes of Metcalf and Sexton.

Galvin is overrated imo, im not salty he's going i've just always had that opinion. I admit i have not seen much of Latu but what i have seen ive liked. Galvin is always going to be that player that is just a fitness freak and a competitor, which can get you a long way but i don't think he has the ceiling a lot of the pundits think he has.

I certainly think Latu's the more naturally talented of the two, but it's what Galvin does before he gets the ball and what he does off it that puts him in that elite prospect class.

Latu needs to find his voice. he's also quite introspective from what I've seen. definitely more of a confidence player than Galvin from what I've seen, who tends to have the ability to flush what he did previously.

that's what sets them apart.

Absolutely he is overrated. He does a lot of good things off the back of being arrogantly competitive and super fit. Both great attributes that will ensure he has a long and healthy career. However as far a pure natural talent goes he seriously lacks so many things

If I had to choose between a fully fit Galvin or Latu for 5/8 I'd take Latu any day of the week for what he offers on both sides of the ball.

Jeez I'd love to know why whoever at the WT has formed that opinion. Sometimes being out of sight (i.e. injured) and the quiet one holds a player back.

I just hope Latu gets a solid half a season fully fit with Luai to show what he is capable of.

Agree with that. I think he'll be a top 30-40 player in the NRL, but I think he lacks the speed and Walsh/Ponga/Moses/Cleary style brilliance to ever get to be a top 10.

IMO his best chance of doing that is getting a lot stronger and replicating what Yeo does but he thinks he's a 6.

Doesn't mean Latu is going to be better though, just means we might have dodged a bullet with Galvin.
