I think what has been proven is that Douhei is required as much as Latu is and Luai.

Luai is a 6 but what does seem to work is the rotation of Douhei and Latu on a case by case basis. I think Latu is more open to coming of off the bench more than Douhei, and both can play lock as well (Douhei can play anywhere really).

The thing I really like about Douhei is his arrogance and run first mentality and wants his hands on the ball constantly.

The signing of Madden is purely for injuries only.

I think overall if we continue to win games, the players will want to stay. Latu gives me the impression he’s not all about him like Galvin.

Never forget the interview he did a wee bit ago. When asked where his preferred position to play was, he said wherever Benji thinks is best for the team.

Don't think R360 is a threat at all to league. There's a lot of rugby players they'll sign before they even look at league players. Might sign the odd 1 or 2 but that's it. League players unfortunately are big fish in a little pond. Internationally rugby is a much bigger pond. At the moment it just a bunch of click bait journos pushing it on behalf of player managers to try and inflate the market. It may not even get off the ground.

Well yeah...not saying it's a threat...but, with the right conditions, some players will defect. There's also a lot of players in AU, NZ and SA that come from a rugby background and may stay in the game. League does get a lot of players that have played both games believe it or not.

It's never a threat in the beginning. It's usually a slow erosion over time if they're not careful.

Kenty was saying on his podcast that the rlpa could agree to one in a bargaining agreement but the n.r.l would have to give a pretty big lump sum payment to them for the players for them to agree with it. What he also said was that the genesis for the rlpa came from an ex player in the 70s I think he said and at the rlpas very core it was set up to be totally against any form of draft system it's in the very DNA of the rlpa so can't see it ever happening.

The RLPA, like most unions, are happy to bite the hand that feeds them. Take, take, take, but never concede anything.

We did not find any blue print.
The rain played into our hands. Dogs out work teams with a smaller more mobile pack. They could not utilise that mobility in the wet. Our team was up for the fight whilst Dogs showed up expecting the win. Add in a couple moments of pure luck and it stacked up to a good victory. Not the blueprint for future success.
I'm all for keeping Doueihi but I think you are reading far to much into what is thus far a one off win.

If our only option is to pair Luai and Latu in the halves, Luai needs to wear the 7 and take control, not leave it to a young rookie in Latu.

It always amazes me to hear people talking about a draft as if that's something that would be positive for the Tigers - I assume it's just because we've been crap for so long that people start to assume any other system would have to be better. Literally the one advantage this club should have going for it is a massive junior catchment area, which a draft would immediately render irrelevant. All a draft would mean is that we'd be competing with the bigger, richer clubs without any edge.

The reason why the AFL draft sort of works isn't the draft itself but the incredibly restrictive contracts players coming into the league are put under. You can't be an unrestricted free agent in the AFL until you have been at a club for eight years and even then if you're in the top earners on a list your current club has the right to match any offer. People might want the NRL to introduce similar rules but it's never going to happen - for one thing, severely restricting the earnings capabilities of young league players would just reopen the talent drain to union, in Australia or offshore. The AFL doesn't have this concern.

And despite all that, the AFL still has lousy clubs down at the bottom year after year and big names more or less perpetually at the top. Yes, when players force a trade to a preferred club their current club gets draft picks. But they just get used on more young talent that then leaves.

Basically, what would happen in a draft would be a turbocharged version of what happens now. Bad teams like the Tigers would get the best talent at 18 years old (assuming we don't make a balls up of our picks, which, hmm), would give it first grade experience up until more or less exactly the point at which it starts to really flourish... and then lose it to bigger teams. The difference would be that instead of having the chance to supplement your Galvins and Makasinis - top five draft picks - with a heap of 30-50 pick equivalents, all the lower picks go to the teams that are also doing the poaching.

Basically, building a system like Penrith or Canberra would become impossible because the talent all gets artificially shared round at 18. At this point there's no purpose for a club to invest in pathways and juniors. The NRL itself has no interest in long-term planning so grassroots rugby league would get starved of funding.

Basically, a draft would be terrible for the game and terrible for clubs like the Tigers. It's a dreadful idea and one that ought to be sealed in concrete and dropped in the ocean.

Right because a salary cap system that was designed to work in conjunction with a draft would be worse than that same salary cap system that has a hard cap but allows unlimited 3rd party arrangements. Kent was saying on his podcast he knows of currently 6 clubs breaking the salary cap to varying degrees from minor to massively.
The Galvin situation for instance, in order to let him break contract early and go to the Bulldogs, they would have to negotiate with us. More than likely we would have gotten their first round draft pick as compensation in next year's draft. So next year we would have pick no 6 and pick no 14 in the first round if we finished as we are now. That would compensate us a lot more than 150k.
To say the system only works because the clubs at the bottom are poorly run is an assumption we don't know for sure, as we don't have the added 3rd party funds to build a team like the top teams atm. How can an salary cap work if there are allowed to be unlimited dollars thrown at players outside of it. It's insane. The theory of players at clubs taking unders to stay togeather is garbage. It's only unders on the salary cap but the rest is topped up by 3rd parties. The system works if you have access to them otherwise your struggling to compete.
To suggest the afl draft system would be worse than what we have now is silly.

We do this as fans alot. Win a game player x plays well, need to retain him at all costs, player plays 3 good games a year.

We cant keep doing this if we want to improve. For the record I love Ad and his attitude, but he has been here for x amount of years and last sat defintaely isnt the norm. If he can reproduce that for the rest of the season sure bump up the value but i would want to see it.

We have carried AD on a good contract for a fair few years with little to show. Ideally he gets the chance and rips it up for the rest of the year but we cant sign him up for 1 good game at a position we may not even want him to play long term.

Toa is the same im hoping his fall from form is the busted shoulder but his track record says this is him. I hope its not because he has been electric at times this year but he is every year.

Finally got some crumbs re. Doueihi's contract talks. So Dragon's offer is still at $400k for 2 seasons (not $500k as some reported). Our Offer is now at $350k for 2 seasons. If Doueihi extends with us, then he doesn't have to pay Moses commission. If he goes with Dragons then he pays Moses 8% commission, which is $32k, ostensibly making his salary $368k per year at the Dragons. For the sake of $18k, I think he stays. Probably could get a third party to cover that anyway as a local junior... My only concern is if he gets offended by Richo refusing to budge on the price.

Bump our offer up and match it. Just get it done. There's more upside than downside with his versatility.

You don't have to tell me there's a lot of players that that play both codes growing up, did it myself back when Methuselah was a boy, also got 2 sons that did the same as did a few of their mates.Every weekend was a logistical nightmare ferrying a car load of young blokes from game to game. I just don't it'll end up being a major issue, but who knows I'm old to admit I've wrong before and I'll probably be wrong again only time will tell. Cheers
