Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

He is also 23 and a consistent first grader already.
For his price he is more than fine.
We probably have at least 20 other players in our squad who offer less and probably 10 others that earn more.

Why his name came up in a salary cap convo beats me.
He probably gets 75k less at a consistent top four club, but he’s fixed a problem we had, brings a bucket load of team first culture, and he’s earning his money on the field. Not to mention he’s got the best media pics with a smile the size of the opera house. He’s the least of our problems.

In a team containing star players where they could simply fill a role.
We don’t have that same luxury.
Are you serious? I'm not sure how much longer I can listen to the drivel that comes out of your mouth. This is Biden level dementia.

You're saying Turuva was "filling a role" at Penrith? The club with never ending talent coming through their ranks? The club that could have replaced him with just about any winger off contract because they'd kill to be on the end of that backline? The club that had him first choice despite that?

Turuva is one of the best wingers to ever put on a Tigers jersey and he's not a bad fill in at fullback either. I really don't know what the hell you're talking about.

I value Bula at around 700k.
That being the case I wouldn’t be against us paying him 800k, maybe even 900k at a stretch.
But if he is looking for any more than 900k as part of a long term deal, which I am sure he will be, I simply don’t see any value for money from him in that price range.
So I suppose it’s a wait and see as to what type of contract value is negotiated, I believe the proposed contract will be 5 million for 5 years starting from 2026.
Maybe $900 with ratchet clauses, $1 mill by default.

Do you remember Pat Richards by any chance ?
Turuva is wholehearted and always gives his best, but his 450k contract is pushing the limits of his ability.
I’m not saying get rid of him right now, but if we needed to find an extra 250k to put towards signing a genuine elite player, one option would be to replace him with Luke Laulilli on 200k and it’s virtually a like for like player,

1.25 for Luai
1 million from 2027 onwards for Bula
450k for Turuva
Total is 2.7 million
The salary cap becomes 12 million I believe in 2027, so those 3 players alone will be taking up almost 25% of our salary cap.
All 3 are good solid players, but they do not have the quality to be taking up almost 25% of our salary cap and allowing us to build a good enough team around them to challenge for a premiership.
So we can continue with mediocrity or do something about it.
Dumb question, why are we just grabbing these 3 players together?

I could point to Api on 700k? Luai/Bula (IMHO 100% worth it). But that's 3m in our spine.

Or Bird/Hunt who have been fizzers.

IMHO, Turuva, Luai and Bula take the field. They would take the field in almost every team in the comp (Storm, maybe not. Every other team, yes).

Is Luai 1.25 Million? or 1 million or 900k value. I don't care because he is on the field applying that value for us. Unlike Sullivan who is 50k more then Turuva, playing against us*!

I really don't mind us overspending on a player as long as that player is delivering us value and helping the team execute our gameplan! You see in the Bulldogs how Galvin is there for Unders, but doesn't fit their gameplan and makes things worse.

1-13, don't care if they are overpaid a little. Get good talent that absolutely kicks.

*I know he has shirked 100k and we have some deal where we pay him 250k to play for souths... TLDR it sucks.

Turuva is in the argument for best winger Tigers have ever had along with Richards and Taniela and at good value
All credit to Turuva.

No idea why people are debating paying 450k for a winger. He is worth it and brings the value.

That said:
How good are these two.

Love Taniela Tukali, he was AMAZING to watch and just insane. But he was like a bunch of wingers, Merritt, Brett Morris, etc. Gets ball, runs scores try.

Pat Richards, now he was different. He was like a 5/8 playing winger.
Jason Taylor was totally foolish in punting Richards. Richards=finals. Richards means your default spine teams get rattled by someone doing something very different and it working.

Turuva is far more standard then the above. Still a class act and once we get more ball to him, I have zero doubt he will be crossing the line more!

I know this is realistically no chance of happening, but I think it’s a valid question to ask would Jonah Pezet at 7 and Latu Fainu at 6 be a better halves pairing than Latu and Luai ?
I believe it would certainly be a more balanced better halves pairing and would have the benefit of a natural, confident 7 with a good kicking game, which would free up Latu to do what he does best, running the ball and challenging the opposition similar to how Ethan Strange plays for the Raiders.
Not only would it be a better long term halves pairing, it would also save us money to spend on upgrading other positions as we could surely sign Pezet for 1 million dollars per season if not slightly less ?
As I say it will not happen while Benji is our coach as he will want to show loyalty to Luai, but if we were serious about becoming the best team possible, we would at least consider it.
It is just as valid a question as whether Sterling and Kenny would be a better halves pairing than Latu/Luai/Doueihi.... just a bullshit hypothetical not worth the time you put into the post!

You nailed him!

The pure volume of his inane hypothetical posts is staggering & a massive reason why the forum content has declined!

It’s already fact that we are hoping to offload as much of Bud Sullivan’s contract as possible and it’s been stated we are trying offload Jack Bird and potentially Royce Hunt.
So we are hoping Souths come to the party in regards to Bud Sullivan and I’m assuming the only possible chance of offloading either Jack Bird or Royce Hunt for their full contract values would possibly be to a UK Super League club.
Realistically we cannot afford to offload Hunt unless we manage to replace him with someone better.
I assume our current t pause on any more recruitment for 2026 is pending on at least 2 of the above players being moved on.
Without adding two more quality players I cannot see how our current roster as it stands for 2026 is top 8 quality.
Plenty of our fans disagree and believe we have a top 8 quality roster as it stands for 2026, time will tell.

It’s certainly not yours when you believe all we need to do is leave Doueihi out of our top 17 and we win the competition.
We are overpaying slightly above average players and it’s preventing us from having any cap space to create a genuine top 8 roster.
If this season didn’t prove it to you, next season will again highlight it.

This would have to be the most ridiculous comment you have ever made. What does that even mean? What do you call 7 tries in 2 games?
We have 2 better wingers than him apparently.
It’s really surprising how we miss the top 8 with the team full of superstars that we have ?
According to a large part of our supporter base, all we need is two high quality middles and we become the complete rugby league team that should be winning the premiership.
There are no high quality middles available for 2026 and we cannot afford to make a competitive offer to try and sign the ones currently available for 2027 unless we offload some of our other highly paid players. So we are banging our heads against a brick wall unless willing to make some tough and ruthless decisions in regards to recruitment and retention.

Think he and Coates make team of the year.
Marks had an amazing year, definitely been one of the best players to watch.
Crazy how involved he has been in each game.

Few mistakes no doubt but he's been red hot this year. Top try scorer too.

Well my friend, the sizzle refers to the excitement while the steak refers to the substance. What do you call Keith Lulia scoring 4 try’s in one game for us? Now Marky is obviously a better prospect, but having a couple good games where you score a bag full isn’t automatic proof that you are a marquee player.

Let me explain why you are a forum hack and not in any recruitment position with any NRL club.
None of the top clubs buy, or pay overs for, elite players. They identify young talent and bring them through. When did Penrith, Storm, Broncos, Raiders buy a star?
Here's an incomplete list of NRL players 21 or under: Latu Fainu, Sam Fainu, Isaya Katoa, Ethan Strange, Couchman Twins, Paul Alamoti, Ethan Sanders, Demitric Vaimauga, Fletcher Sharpe, Robert Toia, Owen Pattie, Tanner Stowers-Smith, Blake Steep, Casy McClean.
A few of those are standouts in teams playing finals footy and on very little money.
Smart recruitment isn't about outspending other teams, it's about identifying young talent.
It's started with the Fainus, Bula, Skelton, hopefully Makasini, the Mays. Leave it to the experts.

And Tito is also a handy backup fullback as well if required
Correct and that cannot be questioned.
What can be questioned is do our current 1-5 have enough star factor to win a premiership?
If the answer is no, changes would ideally need to be made when a player, or players with genuine star quality become available wouldn’t they ?
