Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

he didn’t with us, he has a top quality roster at the broncos i’m glad he’s doing well but recruiting was our achilles heel for many years under him.
Madge did struggle with recruitment here, but I won’t blame him entirely for it. Given Lee and Pascoe were around during his tenure with us, having those 2 around almost made us look like a basket case almost every week. Especially Lee.

oh 100%.

The coach might not survive at a club that has poor results but there is always so much more to that then coach - always the fall guy for the failure of others and their 'style" targeted.
The most successful clubs back their coach and move on their players - and they attract players to that system.
Some here were suggesting that Maguire would never get a professional coaching position again after his stint with us - after two successful rep stints now at arguably one the strongest clubs in the comp.

The most “successful” clubs indeed keep their coaches .. because they are successful …if they stop having success they get rid of the coach

I just said that Souths had ultimate success with Maguire ..: then canned him three years later … what happened there? Bennett went there next for three years of Top 4 and then back in the GF..

The only way this club is going to be competitive in the long term is by developing its own talent from within.
We have to build from within, doing things like making sure we don't have to sign any more Jack Bird type players because we have cheap young options on hand. That's the plan: start by not being a basket case, build a stable platform, focus on bringing in and developing talent.

There really is no other way to do it, however much we as fans might obsess over pricey free agent signings. How often do you see Penrith or Melbourne make big signings at the top of the market? And it's exactly what Richardson is talking about.
Exactly. Build from within to get value and hopefully, loyalty.
That has been the problem.
We need to get the best talent identifiers.
Those that can identify natural ability [eg. speed/deception/IQ] and the physical expectations of height and growth. eg. parental genes for one example]. This would take a lot of research and attending a lot of lower grade games and early age rep. games.
Then come up with a plan to get them---selling the belief why they should come to us. Not an easy task.
That is where we need to loosen the purse strings to attract that person! Or two?
Poach the best talent scouts if need be. A wise long-term investment.

After two seasons as the head coach of theWests Tigers reserve-grade side, Aaron Payne has departed the club.

Returning home to North Queensland due to personal reasons, Payne brought a wealth of knowledge to the club'sNSW Cup side and helped get them to ninth on the ladder during this year's campaign.
Apart from some extensions, the KOE NSW Cup coach appointment may be our next bit of recruitment news coming up, probably late October.

Who could it be?

Jarred Farlow - current assistant coach NSW Cup
Shane Sultana - the recently appointed Jersey Flegg coach (prior to Payne resigning)
Matt Church - '23 premiership-winning Brisbane Tigers coach (Richo's club), just finished up there
Any recently sacked NRL assistant coaches???
Any others???

PS. It's advertised as a Part Time role so whoever it is will likely have another job (maybe in our club, maybe elsewhere).

Is it being a part time role standard practice BWG?

As I mentioned in another thread the WTs had far fewer injuries than anyone else
I've noticed that when we have fewer injuries. It is usually when we have lost most of our seasonal games.
My take/theory on that over the years is, it is because.
1. They don't run hard enough with the ball in attack. Avoids injury? Soft landing/contact.
2. They don't defend with aggression/intensity. Avoids injury? Head knocks etc. Soft contacts.
Just my take on it, but they do coincide with poor results > less injuries.

Dont reggies and firsts train together at Concord every day?
The players arent part timers?
Not sure. Potentially it is only the NRL contracted players (all Top 30, T&T etc) that train at Concord.

Bit hard for someone only on a reserve grade contract who may need to work to supplement their income

I agree that this team probably isn't going to win a premiership. But then I'm the one who has been saying for literally years that the only way this club is going to be competitive in the long term is by developing its own talent from within.

More to the point, we can't sign a bunch of players without getting rid of a bunch - that's how the cap works. So what are you actually asking them to do? Tear it all down and start again, again?

You very rarely get players for unders in free agency. It's a crap way to build a roster as the Titans show year after year. We had got so bad that we were able to go from diabolical to respectable just by bringing in some competent players, but no-one thinks that's the end of the job. Unfortunately, we can't go and drop another few million in the open market.

Succinct statement. I agree, it’s a long game approach far longer than any have patients for.
I‘ve often mentioned it’s a waste to bring a key marquee into a struggling side, your right about Melbourne and Penrith on one hand as they stand though Melbourne and Penrith did go through a period of bringing in key Marquee players to help with the growth of their squad.

Yes it is frustrating to see these supposed figures for the Broncos compared to what we pay players of similar if not less ilk.

I guess a few things … are players are attracted to the Broncos for its standing as nearly always being a top 4 thus premiership chance; cheaper cost of living in SEQ than Sydney; and, the 3rd party deals which are heavy at the Broncos.

We just have to be smart & shrewd and bank on better performance getting us to the point where players will take ‘unders’ to come to us or stay with us.

Richo is working hard cutting back on the overpaid it seems. And at the moment we’re trying to attract players through 1) opportunity, 2) the Benji factor & his family first mantra & 3) the Luai/Api/Terrell connections. That’s our sell until our performance on the field has agents knocking down our door.
This is exactly why the salary cap doesn’t work. The top teams have the opportunity to buy players at a discount and the bottom teams (like us) often have to pay a premium. Same overall amount, very different reality. Don’t bag Richo for it. It is what it is
