Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Everyone saying we need to rush to sign people are sh1tting the bed. That's Pascoe talk. We're supposed to be a development club remember? The worst moments in our Club's history have come when we think we are loaded and start handing out big deals too quickly.

The best way to exist in the player market for our club is to remain reactive, and to wait for the great deals to pop out from other clubs over-extending themselves.

If we forgo salary-cap structure in desperation to win the battle to keep players or change the perception of our club, we will be back in the swamp again. This is the moment you want richo running things the most.

The tv deal will be confirmed soon, wouldn’t mind a Fainu or two extending before then tho

It has probably already been mentioned but really need to step up with our Junior Talent identifying programs.

We can sit back till November, there’s no rush. We do need to replace him though. Anyone who thinks Madden is the replacement because he’s had two or three games is delusional.

The NRL have given the Chiefs a massive leg up by ignoring the tax free advantage in the salary cap. Yes I can understand them wanting a competitive franchise but it makes it very hard for the remaining franchises . Maybe there should be some sort of agreement they can only recruit one player from each franchise. Of course the restraint of trade card would be thrown on the table. Let’s face it we are a real chance of losing half a dozen players. It’s taken us over a decade to finally get a competitive team and that could be out the window.

On the other hand if by some miracle we only lose Luai, we will be probably be in a stronger position salary cap wise.
Could someone explain who's providing the tax free incentive? Is it a PNG Govt Policy? If it is then its a bloody disgrace. I'm part of an organisation who provides millions of dollars of health care to PNG. If the PNG Govt is forgoing tax revenue to appease a sporting team while still having their hand out for aid, then there is something terribly terribly wrong.

Its not rushing, its being proactive. It should happen over the next 5 months prior to Nov 1.
Being reactive in a market where two new clubs have massive cap space will only end badly for us.
Its also important to note, we're not talking about players that still need to prove themselves and consistency like To'a, Herbert etc. We're talking about Taylan, Terrell, Samuela, Bula, Turuva etc. Guys who are our top performers, established NRL players who will have NRL clubs chasing them.

Its not about offering them overs or "big deals" but upgrading them appropriately given what they have shown and proven, such as Sam, Terrell and Taylan who are all rep quality. Its important to be proactive now rather than reactive because right now we have the leverage of 2027 over teams like the Chiefs. We can encourage those main guys to sign on for 2028 and beyond by upgrading (not too much) their 2027 contracts, which PNG and other clubs cannot do. Use the leverage while we have it, because that leverage goes at the end of the year.

100%. The only way to build a sustainably successful club without financial advantages is to have a production line of junior talent. As soon as you're paying players market rate - or, worse, signing them as free agents in an open bidding war, where paying overs is more or less guaranteed - you're not getting good value in the cap. It has to be based on there always being a decent amount of home-produced guys on small salaries, who step in when the last guy goes elsewhere for more money.

What we've done in terms of dragging ourselves out of a hole with astute signings is great, and really some of the value we've walked into is astonishing: both Mays, both S Fainus, Turuva and KPP all should have commanded bigger contracts on the open market. But it's only stage one. Stage two has to be producing our own.
