Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

People seem to say the 13 thing a lot when he has played only 3 games at lock in his career, the majority has been edge backrower or 5/8.

All 3 of those games were in nsw cup and they lost 2
At his best, he is the best 5/8 at the club. At his worst, he won't surface from NSW Cup.
A lot needs to play out before we should consider putting him in any squads, but there's huge upside there if the stars align for sure.

Hypothetically, say he gets to his best, either him or Latu are going to have to accept playing in unpreferred positions.

I'd say they'll start him off where comfortable at 5/8 in Ron Massey Cup and then injuries & his form will determine whether he gets called up to NSW Cup this season.

The important thing is him being able to train 1 day per week with the NRL squad & his attitude, skills & fitness there will determine whether Benji gives him a pre-season T&T.

Personally think a Wade Graham style back-row role could be an alternative with our packed stocks in the halves.
Hopefully his attitude to defense has changed. Should start in Ron Massey before progressing to Koe cup.

Unfortunately he doesn’t have Wade Graham’s work rate… is thst something you develop at 25?

If he develops into the back up 6 ..it’s not the end of the world ..
Possibly not but he did quite well at backrow at Manly a few seasons ago, can't recall what his effort areas were like then. But work rate will get better with fitness so if he is as light as ever and can build a decent cardio tank, it may not be out of the realms of possibility. This will be an interesting year ahead what level he can return to.

I think his main issues are something happened to him or his family as a kid and it’s really messed him up , ruined his career when the anxiety of being an 800k footy player and having to perform overwhelmed him . I heard recently he was in a good place mentally . So this could be an amazing bit of business
He was best friends of the young man who died at Manly, Keith Titmuss. I imagine he was all kinds of messed up after that.

I cant see hom wver being a good 13. He has the talent but no way he will have the work ethic. Edge backrower, where he has played most of his NRL would be his best bet.

I think the problem is mentally coming up he was the IT pin up boy all the natural talent in the world never had to work for it like the big prop who runs over all the small kids but when starts playing against kids his own size hides in the corner

I think somewhere in the backrow 13 would be great but if he doesn't want to tackle it could be a problem

Well it’s a win win for the tigers , he stuffs up he’s gone , with little cost to us .
On the other side , he works his arse off turning pre season , he gets a spot but it will be on a low wage , if benji can get him to beleif

Schuster is an interesting proposition. If you look at Parra the player that moved the dial for them when he joined is Dylan Walker, comes on and plays that lock role and visibly speeds up the play and provides good ball to the 7 or creates gaps in the middle and feeds short balls to forwards running a decent line into the gaps he creates. Schuster has a higher skillset than Walker in attack, however he could play a similar role and push AD and Luai a bit wider. Could be incredible Api>Schuster >AD/Luai/Bula or it could be a mess with too many creative players getting in each others way. Time will tell.
I think that is his best chance of success, being a specialist at coming off the bench as an attack minded 13.
To do it successfully he needs to be fit so he can play a fast up tempo style and ensure he is defending strongly in the middle.
If he can get back to playing well on an edge, that’s a bonus.

Truth is he is glued to the NSW Cup or lower until he proves he can do it consistently, which to me is at least a dozen games. IMO he is behind everyone in that NSW squad, including the dudes that have struggled in the step up like mason etc.

He would not be on my plans until next year.

Also he plays where we need him
The difference is we know he can perform well at NRL level. Importantly, his mates know he can perform and at least one of them has approached Marshall as was detailed in an article. I wish him all the best because at his best, he brings skills ideally at the No 13 position which many sides do not possess.

I'm not even sure it's a work ethic issue. Ball playing at lock and on an edge are completely different and just because you can do one does not mean you can do the other.
Not saying he doesn't have it in him but we have never seen it whereas on edge he 6 or backrow he has shown his raw talent is elite.

His work rate in terms of runs and tackles were statistically the equal of Graham. Graham adds all the extra work of line speed, pressuring kickers and kick chase at all times. Schuster didn't get off the line or pressure kickers but his kick chase was always decent.
