Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Makas misses all seem relatively similar, he goes for legs tackles and they just slip straight out of his arms....probably due to him not using his shoulder as its shot...its all arms
The guy is used to dominating school kids with and without the ball. He really should have spent the year learning how to play against men in reserve grade.

Feel like he has changed a few things with the ball the last couple of weeks

People have selective memories I swear . When Mcclean came into first grade he was worse than Makasini . His first year was a very steep learning curve . Then game by game he got his confidence both within his own game and the system … and by next year he’s clearly the best centre in the game .
Something happened mid game last week with Masi . All of a sudden he was driving through tackles , and he looked a lot more potent . I know the Pom gave him a bath defensively so it was a case of 2 ateps forward 1 step back , but I felt like something clicked around minute 50 with Masi . It seemed he was getting in top of the big pom winger …. And then he wasn’t. I’m quietly confident he took a leap during that game. Like I said I know he was given a bath and it sounds like crazy talk … but yea I can’t explain it . It just seemed like all of a sudden his output went up 20-25%.
I thought exactly the same thing

Good post.

Even when Dylan Edwards came into first grade - he was shocking. Defensively, he was ordinary. Then after some time he became an outstanding player.

Saukuru is the only one out of those outside backs you'd want to keep. He's so far ahead of Tavana it's not funny. Probably the best all around athlete at the club between both NRL and NSW cup levels. Bigger, faster, stronger, more skillful.

Other clubs develop young players, so they have cheap players who can potentially contribute at first grade because of their physical traits. We don't recruit athletes

Attard is a decent prospect, but still needs another year in cup on a train and trial while he fills out.

If Tupou replaces Will Craig in our top 30 that's good roster development. If he's replacing Toa then that's horrible.

Herbert is cheap yes, but good no. He's old, slow, injury and error prone. He's good value on a train and trial
Conveniently forgetting Averillo's signing to replace To'a

Which is the primary reason that he shouldn't be playing NRL, and especially so when there is at least one other untried option in Saukuru sitting there ready to go.

Agree. When he picked up that loose ball and made a break down the line I wish he had’ve pinned the ears back rather than try to fend off ponga. He may have had enough momentum to slide over the line in the wet conditions rather than being stopped 5 metres out. Hopefully he learns to back himself. Who knows, that could’ve been the winning try for us and would’ve given his confidence a huge boost - which I think he needs. I’m glad he is being given another chance this week but wouldn’t surprise me if Tupou takes his spot in the coming weeks, as he has a bit to work on especially in D. Either way I really hope he finds his confidence soon.

WW2 was rife for methamphetamine stimulant use Was called Pervitin. Have a read about the case of the Finnish soldier Aimo Koivune

Saukuru looks to be a good prospect. He needs to make Marshall sit up and pay attention by getting himself superfit. Having a higher standard of fitness will assist with his involvement in attack and defence. We all know his impact with the ball so it is up to him to work hard.

I agree Lestronge. As correctly stated he got hosed by Dom Young. But i can see what you mean, i thought the same , he was starting to run harder and looking more confident with the ball. Made a good run up the left side of the field in the second half with strength, also made some good one on one tackles. He's getting there , and i am looking forward to see how he backs up against the Dragons.

It's all Cup!

For reasons I don't understand Makasini and Tino T seem ahead of Saukuru.. The place has been on the offer for Saukuru and I am unsure if Benji is holding him back or he is holding himself back...?

The point being it's all Cup. If these people have to fill in for a game or two due to horrible injuries so be it. We need quality in our NRL squad.

Jock Madden is a great depth half but should not be our starting NRL halfback if we can help it. We are going to need to find 600k+ at least, probably 1m to get a good halfback that can actually steer our side. We start signing and filling our cup squad with 400k players, we can't do that.

Our centers still suck too. Turuva is far better on the wing then center, May is flakey, Herbert is a joke I totally agree... We really need another high quality center... again that's $$$

When were not winning with our best 1-19, that needs to change and where we spend the money on.

I think it’s highly likely Makasini will become a very good NRL player sometime within the next couple of years.
The problem for us is we have thrown all our eggs in the basket with him this year as an 18y.o rookie and it was clearly expecting and asking too much from him too soon.
He has gradually got worse as the season has progressed which is a real concern as to how badly his confidence has been effected.
We desperately need a big game from him against the Dragons tomorrow, but it’s hard tj be confident it will happen based on recent form.
Surely playing him in NSW Cup or even Jersey Flegg to help get his confidence back would have been a better option ?

I’ve heard that Benji apparently does not have much confidence in Saukuru’s defensive reads and defensive work ethic.
I was a little surprised to hear that could be the reason why he is not getting an NRL call up as I’m sure many agree with me in saying I do not have much confidence in the defensive reads or defensive work ethic of a few of the players he keeps selecting in our NRL team each week.

He wouldn’t be playing if not for injuries. We’re out of choices in the centres. He came off the bench for May last week
Not exactly out of choices, we have a couple of players playing well in NSW Cup each week.
I could understand avoiding them if they are regularly losing like they were over the past couple of seasons, but the form of our NSW Cup team including the centres has been very good over their past few games.

Is this when he called you up to get your advice on some NSW Cup players he was considering signing.?

I don’t agree. I’ve found Saukuru’s reads at centre in Cup very poor. Both have attacking ability but their edges collapse in defence. His best form was in the backrow

He’s also unsigned so probably best to give game time to players in the clubs plans.
