Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Parra player Volkman , he would be a handy back up , Madden , Latu , Andrew’s , Volkman , not brilliant but ok , Volkman was going well at Parra
interesting to hear braith say volkman was seen at the dogs, i cant help but feel that was a strategic plant haha even though conti i believe just resigned

Harsh. He has won premierships at 3 clubs plus trophies at NSW and NZ. Tim Sheens by comparison has only won 4 Premierships over a much longer career.

Clearly Madges' approach has a short half-life but to give him no credit is harsh.

Billy Slater will turn them around next year and they will be top 4 again

No coach is successful without a good squad. You need to look at the seasons any coach was successful and look at their squads/clubs/ resources , support, and then compare that to what they are coming to before you realistically consider that trey can make an improvement.
I 💯 agree that any coach needs the required quality of players to be able to get the desired results and it’s as clear as day that we lack class out wide even at full strength and we clearly do not have the required depth in certain positions.
The recent signings of Jake Averillo and Jayden Brailey help fill a couple of voids, but it’s not enough, we are still short of an NRL quality back up centre, we really need two when you consider Jake Averillo will also likely be our best back up fullback.
We also ideally need one more NRL quality back up winger, one with genuine speed would be nice.
We need an NRL quality back up edge back rower and an NRL quality 13 if we could find someone, but there are simply none out there at the moment.
We also ideally need an extra NRL quality prop, but we would need o offload one of May, Pole, Twal, Fainu, Hunt or Seyfarth before we can realistically add another proven NRL quality prop.

The problem being Benji has chosen most, if not all of our current squad and he has also chosen or been well aware of the risk in paying our high cost players even though they have not yet done anything to prove they are elite players capable of providing value for the big money contracts we have agreed to pay them.

5/11 is infinitely better than 0/15.

They also went to a GF too.
Yeah but 1/15 is ALSO infinitely better than 0/15. My point is: it's rather slim pickings, which is to be expected, and although I would welcome a Brad Arthur appointment, I would compel myself to have very low expectations. BA is not a proven winner, he's a decent coach who can sometimes get results under certain circumstances. Tigers have been proven to rarely provide the circumstances for a middle-range coach to succeed.

By comparison Madge Maguire reached the finals 5/12 times in his career, 3 NRL clubs and 2 premierships, so by any measurement Madge has the superior output of the two. But you'd never invite Madge back.

Bloody Bula, how frustrating he is. He definitely is very fast. When Weekes got away against Canberra I said to my mate "Bula will catch him easy" and he did. Missed the tackle, but pace wise he is very fast. Then last week he gets on the outside of Suli about 5 times and Suli gets him every time. Maybe his initial excelleration is poor and thats why he looks like he could break through but never does.
Yes, that's correct. He has extremely low levels of acceleration. But after 50m he can generate decent levels of pace. Problem is acceleration is what wins you matches. Creates breaks, scores tries. It's not often you get the opportunity to run 50-70m in order to reach your top speed.
Doeuihi is very similar to Bula in that regard. He can teach a top speed eventually and be reasonably fast. But over 20m he's slow as a tortoise.

Injuries are a factor that every team has to deal with ..although other teams seemingly have much better depth ..

If the upgrade to the Top 30 is indeed fact ..I would suggest it’s because they are being paid a salary that forces the club to put them into the Top 30 next season even if they won’t be playing NRL ..as they have done numerous times in the past for better or worse ( normally worse )
And that would be a huge mistake, and one that we can ill afford. Everyone in the top 30 must be able to contribute in first grade. If we were to take a punt on a youngster who's path is blocked at another club, that's one thing. But to promote someone who's years away and we know that, is insulting to everyone involved with the club

We always have about 4-5 players that are light years from first grade and are in our top 30. No good clubs would do this. We continue to do it and expect different results.

MADGE CONNECTION?

West Tigers second rower Alex Seyfarth is reportedly being shopped to rival clubs, including the Brisbane Broncos where there is a possibility of him linking up with the man that handed him his first grade debut Michael Maguire after being him through the grades and from reports Madge is a huge fan of Seyfarth would is on about $475,000 with two year left on his contract the Tigers would have to fit some of the bill.

** Hopefully it’s just speculation from that webpage.
** I know we overlay nearly every player on our books, but I would be shocked if Seyfarth is being paid anymore than 400k maximum
He's definitely on that much.
I've said it numerous times, the reason our cap is stuffed is because the likes of Toa, Seyfarth, Turuva and many others are all on 450-500k. We pay depth players way too much and that leaves us with not enough cash to spend on actual top quality players
