Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Surely we are the other Sydney based club but no way Te'o chooses us over the Rabbitohs given his history there plus pathway to replace Uncle Wayne.

Maybe our opportunity is who Rabbitohs discard for him - Ben Hornby or Steve Antonelli.

Queensland assistant Ben Te’o set to pull out of race to replace Billy Slater as Maroons Origin coach

The shortlist of coaches to replace departing Queensland mentor Billy Slater continues to shrink, with another frontline candidate set to pull out of the race as he weighs up a move to an NRL club.

The Maroons are set to lose another frontline candidate with Queensland assistant Ben Te’o weighing up a move to South Sydney amid a poaching bid from English club St Helens.

This masthead understands Te’o has been interviewed by St Helens bosses with a view to replacing Paul Rowley, who stood down from the English powerhouse last month.

Well-placed sources say Te’o is unlikely to move overseas, nor chase the Queensland job, with the Maroons assistant instead being headhunted to reunite with Wayne Bennett at the Bunnies next season.

Te’o declined to comment when contacted on Tuesday, but it’s believed the ex-Broncos defence coach won’t be formally applying for the Maroons post unless approached by the Queensland Rugby League.

Te’o relished his maiden campaign this season working alongside Billy Slater, who resigned last Friday, and is open to considering succeeding him if the QRL deems he is the best fit for the Origin job.

But the 39-year-old, who coached the Queensland under-19s last year, wants to carve out a career as an NRL head coach after successful stints at the Dolphins and Broncos.

Origin great Cameron Smith and Kevin Walters withdrew their interest on Monday and if Te’o is snapped up by Souths, that could leave Broncos assistant Matt Ballin and Maroons legend Darius Boyd as leading contenders.

Te’o has become the most sought-after assistant coach in the code.

Aside from St Helens, the dual international has been interviewed by two Sydney-based NRL clubs, including Souths, who are tipped to win his signature.

Te’o has also been sounded out by Australia coach Walters to be the Kangaroos’ defence coach at this year’s World Cup.

Former Dolphins mentor Bennett gave Te’o his big break at Redcliffe in 2022 and the pair could join forces again in 2027, the year in which the 76-year-old super coach comes off-contract.

That could put Te’o in a position to succeed Bennett as head coach at Souths, the very club with whom the back-row hitman won a premiership in 2014 under Michael Maguire.

I’d take Hornby over Te’o anyway, more experienced.

Yes, and a professional club would learn from their mistakes. We never do.

Sure no club gets it right on all their juniors. Some don't kick on, some develop late, but we miss the boat nearly all the time.

And yes I knew about Saukuru. I've been following him since he was 15, but he was a development player first and not in top 30 until either last year or this year.

Looks like I confused Solomone with his brother Apiasalome who was in the Top 30 in 2023 …I don’t recall him making it to the NRL either …

Can’t argue with their record of developing/ promoting young juniors to the NRL…. It’s an artocious experience .

Mam has been diabolical. But knowing us we would sign him to play 7 and be a controlling half. God I hope we don’t go there.
Not sure how he has been diabolical?
I watch every Broncis game and he and Reece Walsh have been carrying that team, the forwards are not having a go.
Pat Carrigan has been playing not much better than how Terrell has been playing for us and Payne Haas has not been trying.
Not sure how we could fit Ezra Man in on his rumoured 900k per season contract, but he is much better than Luai that’s for certain.

Both Martin and Young are light years ahead of current San Fainu who, according to reports, is asking more than them.

I’d pay 1m for either of them. Both are class, tough and smart footballers. All of which we lack
Read came out and said Sam is not asking for 1.2, it was combined with him and his brother, and to be be fair, that is not a bad deal

Ryan Carr who recently got sacked by Castleford Tigers for supposedly being too critical of their players is the type of hard, aggressive coach we need as an assistant. He had good success when he was the Dragons interim coach a few years back and despite apparently being too critical of players, he is highly respected by all that played under him at the Drsgons and reports are that Tyrell Sloan will pull out of the move to Castleford if he is not the coach.

We should run a market for our next incoming Assistant Coach. Possible candidates ...

Ryan Carr
Steve Georgallis
Ben Hornby
Ben Te'o
Tyrone McCarthy
Nathan Brown
Gareth Ellis
Trent Barrett
Sam Moa
Steve Antonelli

Is carr a defensive coach? I liked what he did at the dragons when he was interim

How experienced is Ellis? Benji would probably prefer him over most others as he would trust him

Ellis is available. Not significant coaching experience though but would embody the right culture & show the boys how to tackle lol

Why is it that you blame every poor decision on the board. By your perspective the whole football dept including coaches and support staff should be sacked and just let the board have total control over the shit show.
The board have hired all the people who keep making so many mistakes at the club. They hire the wrong people, time after time. And that's because they're unqualified, unskilled Muppets

potenitaly,. i also reckon marshall would go for him, i mean he loves a running 6 as we have seen this season and he has done many deals to players facing scrunity or who are in need of a second chance
To go with the other 4 running 5/8s at the club?
The bloke is a loose cannon, in a position we have plenty of cover. No need to waste a second thinking about him

Teo walked out on us the second he could. He wasn't influenced by a manager either, he was his own manager.
He could see we were a basket case and wanted nothing to do with us. We hated him for it but he was right. And nothing has changed so there's no chance he comes here, unless it's as head coach. But even then he knows it's a death trap
