I'm going to liken this to Melbourne coming into the NRL in 1998 after the Super League war and being 100% backed by News Limited. They won the premiership in 1999.
There was a massive incentive to ensure that the Storm was instantly successful in an AFL centric state.
The same thing is happening here, however the primary cash cow is the government. The difference is that the Storm were not given player tax free concessions.
It's no longer a level playing field. There's just not enough great talent to go around, so there will be huge disparities in games and scorelines.
Albo and PVL have gotten this wrong. That's why Abdo jumped ship.

The latest move by the Chiefs imo is an admission the market correction of player contracts is not sustainable.

I know.
I just wish we had concentrated on building the Bears first, then introduced a second New Zealand team from the South Island, based in Christchurch, and finally brought in a PNG team for the 2030 season.
It feels like a knee jerk reaction rather than a properly planned expansion strategy.

Yeah I think we all get that … but Vlandys is specifically saying that PNG can’t use that as a way to get players to sign there on the cheap

it was the Governments idea , and they paid the NRL a $600m cash injection as a bribe .., also it’s not easy to say no to the Government, as they might remember that next time you ask them for some money to build a stadium …

They were attempting it .. but according to the article in the news today … they have been told by PVL that they can’t do it …
I guess we will have to see what eventuates .. but it’s looking like Young won’t be going there in 2028

The tax free advantage is too strong …on top of all the advertising deals the players can get as well … i can’t see it lasting 10 years … probably it will be cut after 5-6 years… so they better start getting cracking on their pathways so they can field a team of 90 percent locals by then

I'm worried that there will be inequality in club rosters going forward due to the expansion.
I have previously floated, that there should be a draft and a set transfer window. I understand that Terry (RIP) felt it limited his choices in the '90s, however, the game has moved on and it's now a professional sports business.
A draft and transfer window would change how players are distributed and help create a level playing field.
It's working for the AFL.
Gee we have been very quite on the signing front, i hope that our club don't think our juniors will get us up the ladder, we need to be active on the player signing and bring in 3-5 1st grade players in each and every year going forward or i feel we will be in the bottom 4 every year going forward.

As you say … they attempted a draft in Rugby League 30 years ago , and the players didn’t cop it and went to court and won … Rugby League clubs are much more self interested than the AFL , and the players seem to have a louder voice ..it seriously wouldn’t last one offseason before someone challenged it … we see the behaviour of players trying to get out of contracts all the time … there would be no chance of some entitled wonder kid rookie going to some bottom feeder club he didn’t want to ..there is also Rugby Union as a viable option for them whereas AFL players only have one option
Yes , there is going to be strong and weak clubs … and I’m worried that our club is going to continue to be one of the weak ones … but I wouldn’t be relying on a draft to come along as a fix unfortunately

Possibly, however this current grassroots system isn't working in my opinion.
In the AFL, young players coming through Coates, the Talent League, State Leagues and Junior Academies can nominate for the draft. They understand that they could be drafted by any club, and that the club will pay their living expenses, salary, training and provide a development contract.
It works well in every other professional sport. It feels like we are still living in the past.
The AFL has had some very poor teams over the past few seasons who barely win games. Also teams that have consistently been up the top. Distribution of talent via a draft/transfer window doesn’t always lead to a closer competition.

Young should be able to sign whatever contract he likes, if that is 900k tax free then so be it
