Its a bit of tounge n cheek but i remember around 2008/2009 Sheens went hard for Michael Crocker and he said no wont play for the Tigers James Maloney also said he wont play for the Tigers and that was last year so how do the Tigers get a another X factor player we either pinch one from another club a junior or grow another Widdop would have been a great signing but he said no as well

The word keeps getting louder that the Roosters are preparing the biggest package deal rugby league has ever seen to bring Ivan and Nathan Cleary to the club in 2020.

Nathan can write his own cheque with Roosters boss Nick Politis, while there is no salary cap for coaches, meaning that Ivan can command his own asking price as well.

The Roosters are likely to be in need of both a coach and a halfback in coming seasons - and the Cleary's fit the bill perfectly.

Trent Robinson is a fine coach but he has been at the helm since 2013 and the players don’t seem to be responding to his words any more.

The Roosters have struggled for form all season, despite having one of the best rosters in the league on paper.

At halfback, star signing Cooper Cronk comes off contract at the end of 2019 and will be ready to hang up his boots.

There is no way the Panthers could match the Roosters in a bidding war for Nathan’s services - and in two years he may just be the best halfback in the game, such is his potential.

I realised it was tongue in cheek and my reply was partly as well - the problem is at the moment we don't have any outstanding juniors coming through and if we did they would be poached by other clubs once they showed some promise. Even players that we picked early as X factor players ( Ado Carr ) are snaffled up by the big name clubs once they get a chance to show their talent. Its why the NRLs level playing field is a myth - yep different clubs win every year - but year after year there are a certain few clubs who are always in the running.

Seriously why worry. OK say if Ivan stays with us next year and builds our team. Great. Ok in 2020 he joins the Roosters and they swap 800k Cronk with 1.2M N Cleary. So WHAT. It's a downgrade and a big one at that. Yes N Cleary is appearing to be a good halfback but he is no Cronk or Pearce yet.

Cleary is a good coach and a good coach for us. He is no superstar, he has not won a grand final and he did not take Panthers there. Oh and he leaves, we call Des, Michael McGuire, Trent Robertson*, Even Barrett who by then will probably get the arse from Manly. Unlike past times there will be good hands in the air. Oh and we miss out on N Cleary…. With the way Luke Brooks is guiding our pack I don't care.

Don't get me wrong, I like Cleary. He has been perfect in building us from a bottom 4 side into something better. If he stays, is loyal and reasonably successful, we will reciprocate. If he signs for Millions with Nick and the Roarters, fine. They get a good rebuild coach that will keep them from the wooden spoon and we can go hunting for someone different.

*Easts are not going to roll out for Cleary. They are going to roll out for Bellamy and say it's time he changes clubs. If that fails then they will go for Green, Cleary or maybe Flanagan. If that fails I expect Des and Toovey to be in their sights. Des would be a good fit for Easts.

Sure, but he took Manly to two premiereships (and kept them under the cap radar, players were paid under market value). He clearly arranged a mess of the Dogs cap, but they hit the semi's and Grand finals.
Now this may mean a year or two being at the bottom of the ladder. But he can get us there.

Personally I would prefer we be a strong top 8 team then a finals bolter. I am just saying that if Cleary leaves in a year or two's time, it's not the end of the world. Hope he stays, hope he gets a GF win with us. But if he won't take us there then we will just grab a bus driver who will.

This season the NRL introduces a $5.7 million salary cap on coaching staffs. It’s another move to keep the competition on a level playing field and to stop irresponsible officials from sending their clubs broke in what has become an arms race to get an edge on rivals.

While $5.7 million might seem plenty, consider the size of football departments and the level of professionalism these days.

Just say Bellamy gets $1.2 million a year at Storm, which he probably deserves. That leaves $4.5 million for three assistant coaches, at least two physiotherapists, a doctor, welfare and recruitment managers, a head of football, team manager, performance analysts, sports science staff, game day trainers and the rest.

The cap rises by 4% each year however it also includes training camps and operational costs including gym equipment, oh, and if a club sacks a coach they are also included in the cap.

The possibility of the father and son team linking up with the rosters is nearly two years away, we have far more important things to be concerned with starting with tonight!!!

I doubt there is any handshake deals in place for what might happen in 2020, I also think there will be plenty of interest from lots of clubs. Anyway things can change in heart beat in the NRL, so I would not be worrying about anything beyond tonight

Doubt Ivan would go. He has complete control here. Trent Robinson has watchers over his back all the time not too mention I doubt he gets the players he wants in his team. Cromk would not have been his call.

Foran, skip. I can't see us using yet another 5/8 and half we have covered with Brooks, Benji and Godinet.

While yes I would have liked to get James Maloney and have rated him since he was with the Warriors. Let past chances be past chances. We Signed Reynolds when no halves or 5/8's were available and we were loosing Moses. A few months later, we see Maloney, Pearce and Cronk. We wern't to have known Cronk was going to continue. We kinda knew talk was around Maloney but we never would have thought Pearce would be available.

Overall we needed Reynolds, not Foran to build our team. Foran is a good player but not in a state to build a team.
