Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

@2041 Don't agree mate.. Knights got Pearce (money too good to refuse and Roosters were getting Cronk ans Knights were one of the last teams with money), Klemmer (needed to get out of Sydney for family reasons) and Ponga (Young kid and offered a truck load of money so hard to say No) .
If Knights were based in Sydney I find it hard to believe they would of even got 1 out of them 3 as a team that had won back to back Wooden Spoons .
Unfortunately we choose the wrong players for the money they are on but as i have said before until be actually make the finals and have better facilities etc.. we will have to pay big money and hope they turn out well. If you think we will get a Rep quality players for little money you need to get your head out of the sand. we all want the the same result though and to see the Tigers in the finals..

No-one gets rep quality players for little money, though. Players tend to sign for the best deal on offer. Periodically we get taunted by a Tedesco apparently "signing for unders to be part of a winning culture" but we all know that's BS. Players go for the best deal on offer, nine times out of 10.

I've said on here plenty of times that the problem is when you get to the stage of trying to put half your roster together from free agents you're inevitably going to end up handing out duff contracts - because most 'big name' free agents end up getting paid too much. You need to identify talent as young as possible and sign it while it's cheap. Then you put a few really top end free agents on top to complete the roster.

@hsvjones are our facilities really THAT bad?

has anyone on this forum ever been/seen what they are like? I would be interested to know if anyone has any first hand accounts....

i mean surely, we must have top class physios/trainers/rehab specialists right like any other sports team.....so is it just our actual facilities?

@Zach I recall Woods (I think on NRL360) saying at one stage something like "25Kg weights weigh the same at Concord as they do in Brisbane".

That might have been Reynolds, i know he said something similar on 360 last year.

@The_Doc Yep you are correct Doc - it was early in the 2018 season - Easy to mistake Woods for Reynolds as both haven't played for the Tigers much in the past 18 months.

Yeah they suck. I've met up with previous CEO Grant Mayer a couple of times and had a tour through Concord - not much to see. The gym is very basic, no recovery facilities there aside from some massage tables. The new Centre of Excellence can't come quick enough with the facilities that will be incorporated into it.

I'd say the size of the staff and the facilities are the problem.
Who was it the other day that got injured at training and the club had an xray machine onsite? A bronco perhaps?
We'd be scratching around for our Medicare card.

Concord reminds me of an old airplane
hanger, or like a Yugoslavian bus shelter

The place hasn't changed since the
1985 world cup. COE will be refreshing.

We had to pay overs for Packer, Reynolds and Matulino. It was actually a step in the right direction for us to sign players of some quality. Wasn't long off a season where Simona had been busted, there was the Moses and Woods nonsense, Farah being shafted, Taylor underperforming. The club was a laughing stock. Not very long ago either.

Pascoe and Go (and Cleary tbh) earnt us some respect and greatly cleaned up the admin of the club. Without that we don't get Maguire and in turn that gets us more respect.

The Knights were coming off spoons but it was clear to all that a) they were going to ride out all of their bad contracts and b) when that was done they'd have cash to burn and KPIs out the wazoo. Plus it's a one-club country town with lower living costs, beautiful beaches yet still close to Sydney. We will struggle to compete with that.

Yes everyone can agree we paid too much for Reynolds, Packer, ET etc... however as a club we really had no choice back than because what player is going to want to come to us when we don't make the finals, Terrible training facilities and past bad management etc.. (We are not the big clubs the NRL likes and have unlimited TPA and special brown paper bags ). I believe we are heading in the right direction now but we still need to pay overs for some players that we really need.. I for one would love to see DWZ come here but not at a massive price.

This argument is such nonsense. The Knights were coming off multiple wooden spoons and somehow managed to sign Ponga, Pearce, Klemmer etc. There's simply no excuse for signing players like Reynolds and Packer on top dollar - it's just throwing good money after bad.

Both the Tigers and the Knights had money bought up big at the end of 2017. The Knights bought smart, we didn't. Thompson and Matterson have been our smartest buys to date and if DWZ turns up, he'll be another. Two of those are Madge's buys, Cleary's choices (when we actually had more cash to splurge) leave a bit to be desired, imo. Though in his defence I don't think anyone realised just how busted Reynolds was. I know I certainly didn't.

Thompson and Matterson were Clearys buys.So far Madges buys have not been great (Jennings and a bloke who couldnt even get registered because he assaulted a woman)

Given the number of players we are supposedly shopping around and the lack of available talent, does it suggest that we are in a rebuilding phase?

I know Thompson was, but I thought Matterson was Madge's decision. Sorry my bad.

All good,Cleary made some bad signings as well every coach does. I am sure Madge will make some good ones in the future, when he arrived there was little talent to pick from left
