Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Why is it that the Storm are never "rebuilding"?

They're just winning.

Yet other sides pretty much say "oh I'm sorry fans but don't expect much from us for a few years until our 5 year plan takes effect, we're in a rebuilding phase"

While other teams are in a "rebuilding phase" the Storm are in a "winning phase" you never hear them talking about rebuilding, they lose Inglis, Cronk and Slater and a number of other important players but they just get it done.

The Storm system is ridiculous and was built over a very long time. Every player who comes into their team knows exactly what their role is, there's no finding their feet.

No player ever gets lost. It's drilled into them, "when you're at this point of the field, you need to be talking to A, have B running this line, then you can either choose option 1 or 2 based on how the defence react. After that play, we need to direct play to point X on the field. When you get there, player C is going to run this line for you, from which you can either hit them or go out the back..."

That's for every player, for every 10m² on the field. They're all programmed like self-learning AI. And they teach them this in lower grades before they're allowed to play in the NRL. It's also why Storm players struggle when they leave. They are so used to having specific functions they're often expected to do more than their role at their new club. Even Cooper Cronk struggled in his first month or so at the Roosters, though, he's too brilliant of a player to have continued struggling.

When it comes to teams like us, we still have guys who are not fully confident in their skills, and don't know at what point/situation to execute those skills in.

@Kazoo-Kid Look at their record. Yes they cheat the cap, but if that's the strategy they use on field, it obviously works. Let's do more of that.

@851 That is why we languish down the ladder because we buy cheap players who are solid but cannot provide the X Factor to win us the tight games and get us into the finals. Until we rid ourselves of the "cheap mentality" we will always languish out of the 8.

Fullback - Sorry Thompson is all heart and good on his feet, but a genuine fullback is required
Centre - Strike Centre, Xavier Coates type
Five Eight - Young Talau
Back Rower - Eisenhuith just does not bend the line and is way to slow, we need a big body with speed and agility - Capwell

@pawsandclaws1 ..be great to have the cap space and the pulling power of a team like the Chooks....but we don’t, so we have to make smart buys and I see a kid like that Melbourne no1 as a smart buy

@TIGER saw a quote from Bellamy a while ago. Something like we don’t rebuild we are here to win every year. That’s a club culture thing. rebuilding is an easy way out for everyone at the club. Players, officials, coaches. Personally I don’t think our coach has bought into the whole rebuilding ideaology, and that’s a good thing

Then maybe instead of targeting players we should be targeting Melbournes recruitment staff, assistant coaches and peripheral staff. Wouldn't get them all but some may bite. Instead we go back and re hire McDonnell.

Madge was part of the Storm system!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes and he had Souths playing that well drilled roll down the field style Melbourne use. At the moment he doesn't have the roster here to play that style and possibly never will. Hence my point that maybe we need to be spending money on the best recruitment /peripheral staff rather than throwing money at other clubs cast offs. Matterson is the perfect example of smart recruitment. I don't know who the genius was that wooed him away from the rorters but that is what we need more of.

Matterson was destined to be a permanent bench player with Crighton going there this year. The Sharks were after him too apparently. Our best player this year. No one else has come close.

Exactly. That's smart recruiting. We need to be sourcing these type of players moreso than just looking at the list of cast off plodders.

I think we need a player like Wade Graham who is very smart and can cover a lot of positions.
Thoughts on Matt Moyland? Sharks need to lose some players and his name was mentioned. He would kill it with us.

I think Coach has done a great job with the players we have and our top 3 paid players out most of the year. All of the players he has resigned so far are players that most approve and happy with. If he can add a few of the players he wants I feel we will make the 8 next year.

Saw a story today on the sharks, they have 5 players on $800k or more next year, plus Woods on $600k, even losing Gallen and Capewell are still over the cap, we should be looking there

The Sharks have a lot of talent in all grades. Some definite improvements to the squad can be found there.

@balmain-boy Sione Katoa. Under contract for next year but has fallen behind a number of talented Sharks outside backs. Would be the quickest guy at our club by a mile.

You don't need to re-build when you're consistently winning. It's a different story when you're consistently losing.

Brad Takerangi off contract. Does a job in a number of positions. Not sure what his price tag would be

Brad would walk into our centres or second row.

Not sure why but I was thinking that we have the current NZ coach and thought that would assist us in attracting quality players.. I know its early and we have a few salary cap problems but fingers crossed this helps us.

Does anyone have a updated Plan for next year with our current situation . E.g. We have 3 spot to fill and approx 800k avail? Understand this changes if we can move Matulino, Packer, etc..

Takerangi is older than Lawrence, he is still playing well but for how much longer?

That's telling in itself.
