Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Damn ..i was going to start a book on how long it took for someone to mention Nicho Hynes..

too late

I can't wait until Nicho Hynes gets injured, then we can talk about signing the 4th-string FB that Melbourne call up.

I watched Scott Drinkwater very intently since he moved to Cowboys and... he oscillates between average and decent. There is a very very good reason why certain players spend several seasons in lower grades and don't get shots at FG until injury strikes deeply. For every Cook or Cody Walker there are 100 average could-play-the-odd-good-game-if-promoted 25 year olds.

but he would be cheaper than Benji with way more upside

(a) you have no idea of the potential cost of Hynes vs Benji in 2020

(b) the upside is, what, his age? You gonna replace Benji Marshall with Nicho Hynes as our long-term 5/8th solution? Benji has played 300+ first grade games, Hynes has played one.

I am going to preface the next part by saying that if you have been watching Hynes go around for years in the juniors and QLD Cup, then fair enough, your opinion about signing him is as valid as any fan.

However if, like me, you've never seen nor heard of the bloke before yesterday, then how in holy hell can you possibly consider him a genuine prospect after one match? How can anyone be so reactive?

Does anyone need reminding of other "amazing" debuts? Ben Black? Tim Smith? Jackson Kaufusi? Daniel Mortimer? Toshio Laiseni? Leon Bott? Even old Luke Brooks, world's next champion after just 80 minutes at the SCG.

Why is it that the Storm are never “rebuilding”?

Exhibit A: Craig Bellamy

Exhibit B: Cameron Smith

Exhibit C : Billy Slater

Exhibit D : Cooper Cronk

I rest my case.

@Kazoo-Kid i agree but its also built from giving a coach long enough to set that system up. Madge needs to be given time. He has clear ideas and a crazy work ethic that has been reflected in our teams effort. We really if we are honest have the worst roster in the nrl.

We let all of our young X Factor players walk. Fortunately, iIt means we have either been able to produce them from our juniors or recruit them. Our path to success is recruit them when young and bring them through our system. Significant reform needs to be undertaken to our coaching and retention. More intensive coaching to accelerate development combined with better retention. First of all, our scouting and recruitment has to be superior to other teams.

To make all of that happen, though, we’ll be waiting for appropriate facilities I think

@DieHarder Until the COE comes online, there are private training facilities available for hire. We have good sponsors who probably have connections with other businesses. Surely something can be put in place now.

I am saying there are players who will be cheaper than Marshall and offer more upside, we have tried Benji for how many years and that is not working.
Manly gave Cust a chance and he was playing great to he got hurt, the warriors have Harris Tevita and Keirghan who both goal kick and are stuck in CC, Penrith debuted a 19 year old kid from Dubbo at 6 the other night, he went well, the cowboys gave Clifford a shot and he went alright.
Why should we put up with another year of Benji when we could try something different, he is not going to get better or quicker, he is going to get worse.
It doesn't have to be a long term solution, just until the cap pressure eases, but if you pick the right kid it might be long term, what do have to lose

@851 Regardless of who we pick or sign our main concern is our forwards for me.. You put our forward pack into the Storm, Roosters, Souths and watch how much it effect there halves /backs. I think we need to add 2 aggressive forwards with the style of a Klemmer, JWH, Lodge, etc... that intimidates the other team and moves there focus to them to free up other players.. Unfortunately we just don't have that and haven't had sense Marty T or Andrew F left..

Because Benji is a good backup. Sign any of those blokes, I'm fine with that. But why get rid of Benji right now, still with plenty to offer?

You literally do not know how much Benji costs, you can't make it part of a value arguement.

I saw Jake Clifford, he was atrocious against us just 1.5 weeks ago.The kid from Dubbo - good for him, is there any particular reason why he's playing in Dubbo and not reserve grade?

Harris-Tevita has my attention, but unfortunately that's like pointing out Brandon Smith or Zac Lomas - the Warriors know exactly what they have with him.

He is playing in the lower grades, I was saying he was playing in Dubbo last year, and Benji won't be playing back up if he is here, I could cop Benji playing as a back up next year in CC, but it just won't happen, if he is in the squad he will be picked in first grade, that I can't cop

I agree and I think most would too. The issue is that not many of the current free agent crop fit that mould.

@WT2K 100% correct and we have to wait or find a junior that looks the goods. The only one that stands out is David Fafita from Broncos that is available.

That kid is already good, he is going to be a star, we could only dream

Brad Takerangi off contract. Does a job in a number of positions. Not sure what his price tag would be

Funny enough he was supposed to come here in 2015. He was signed by Mick Potter, but his contract was never registered. Of course the joke of a club we are, he'd already moved his entire life to Sydney, then we said, "hey uh we don't actually have a spot here for you".

That's not true at all, Cleary was all set to play Reynolds in Rd 1 last year before he got hurt. The rest is history.

And how many CC games has Benji played in 2018 and 2019, none, a free pass

I thought Taylor came in then didn’t rate him and decided not to go ahead with the contract

That is what happened, and contrary to what some will tell you, we coughed up money for him to play at Parra because he had arranged to come to Sydney

That's incredibly shitty from the club. I hope something like that never happens again. You can't ask a guy to move his entire life then send him packing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't we have Kyle Lovett playing in the centres at times that year? Why in the world would we not have gone ahead with Takairangi's contract? Ah, dragging up the past. This is what happens when you finish 9th every year.
