Waiting for Todd to actually do something that might pull the player managers into line just will not happen. They have him over a barrel

Agree with this.I am sure the dodgy things he did at the dirty dogs are well known to all the managers plus his antics in running the NRL.A complete powder puff with no credibility

It is interesting that a player performs “above expectations” and immediately asks for a contract upgrade, regardless of when the current contract was signed or how long remains.
For this to be fair, clubs should be able to renegotiate existing contracts down for players who underperform?

Yeah right that’s fair.......

We need the NFL 'guaranteed money' style contracts.

I.e. Packer 4 years for 3 million...........but only 1 million of it guaranteed. I.e. a player can be cut at any time, but the club must pay them out an agreed amount.

Do the NFL have a salary cap ?

They do, but they also have a Draft and Free Agency, which i cannot see the NRL ever implementing.

Basically an NFL player under contract could wake up one morning and be told he's being traded from Arizona to Buffalo that day, and he doesn't have a say in any of it. Pack up the wife and kids and off you go ...

That's harsh on the player, but it also means that struggling teams are given a leg up through the Draft/Waivers and struggling teams can take their pick of the best talent on offer.

No system is perfect, but the NRL system has turned into a shambles it seems.

Too bad if you don't want to go to Buffalo.

Draft system "absolutely stinks" in my opinion. NFL can keep it!

is BB any good?

Yes. He won NSW Cup Player of the Year. He's pretty small, about the size of Reed Mahoney (Eels hooker). He has a great pass, can tackle, has a running game and most importantly can play 80 minutes. That's about all you need for the fundamentals of playing hooker.

His passing and running isn't as good as Liddle, but his tackling and fitness is better.

Don't see the point in signing a second unknown quantity at hooker. He could only be signed if at least one of Reynolds or Mbye are released. Walters and Brittain would be two very similar players playing the same exact role in a squad which has a number of gaps to fill.

Signing two hookers with a combined total of only a couple of first grades games would be a massive gamble. Sign one unknown and one known quantity. Unless Brittain is maybe on a second tier deal and is contracted to the Magpies...

People are talking up Billy Britain like he's Cam Smith. Matt Mcillwrick won the NSW Cup player of the year in 2016 before we signed him and he turned out to be bog average.

I will go the other way. Not really. An average player who is now 25 and despite going through a few clubs is yet to make any impact on the NRL.

An updated version of Matt McIllwrick. We should be aiming higher

Your a good judge, best player in reserve grade, where there are some very good players. “ we should be aiming higher “ Ok, at whom?

Anyway it’s only another rumour, so when and if it happens you and your fellow travellers can go into another meltdown.

Fair dinkum, if we signed Reg Gasnier some people on here wouldn’t be happy.

I believe that Madge is making a genuine attempt to strengthen our roster. He is a premiership winning coach and knows what it takes. We should all be behind him in his endeavour.

Again its a good buy he will cheap, its a position of need and now we have competition at the spot. The best trainer/player out of reynolds, britian, Walters, mbye, liddle will get the kid. At least one of those should do a job for a few years until simpkins is ready

I wouldnt be very happy at all in signing a deceased player as good as he was 60 years ago

I truely believe we are still feeling the effects of the Grant Meyer tenure. What is clear is we will never be a destination club for quality established first graders unless we pay massive overs. We need to focus on developing youth and holding on to them. That's why it is great to hear a academy is being established in the Macarthur region. Under Humpheries we seemed to have great junior development, that gave as some quality first graders. Unfortunately Meyer comes in, junior development seems to stop, he appoints Taylor who players clearly don't like, and it set of the chain of event of players filing out the door over the last 5 years. Cleary seemed an astute signing, however he just finished off what Meyer and Taylor started. I think Maguire and Pascoe can set the ship right but it will take time.

@Newtown Yeah so going into next season with 3 rookies as our hooking options isn't a scenario any coach wanting to make the finals would entertain.
Even playing a more established player like Reynolds or Mbye are both unproven hookers. It's a good idea to have at least one hooker who's played at least 50+ nrl games of first grade on our books. I would take Luke over Brittain seeing we've already signed Walters.

I think Liddle is the man to miss out. I feel that end of next year once recovered from injury (again) he will be given the opportunity to test the market. Sometimes you just need a change of scenery for the good of both player and club.

Walters is a five eighth who Melbourne used at hooker once, he would be there to cover the halves. I mean we are hanging our hat on a 35 year old five eighth, not a sound policy

Either is hoping a 25 year old veteran of 2 NRL games will become an overnight success

Madge has directly mentioned Walters being a solid hooker and adding competition for that position. Apparently he's played there a lot in QLD Cup, but i've mostly seen him named at 5/8.

Let's face it, it ain't going to be a flash roster next year. I would still rather try and get a class prop than anything. We are soft up front and we need some steel in that position.

Musgrove at the players end of season drinks (guessing he might be on the roster for 2020 if found not guilty)

As mentioned above McIllwrick was ISP player of the year before we signed him. Maybe we can get him back

@WT2K yeah Nofa posted on his socials saying “My USO with the comeback”, don’t know if that’s a comeback to socials or footy.

Maybe not, but Sivo is 25 and had played no NRL games and couldn't get a run at Penrith last year, he was the leading try scorer in the NRL this year after switching clubs, it can happen.
