Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

@2005magic In yesterday's Q&A Madge mentioned that Liddle would be joining him in the coaches box during the season, so that's a positive move to help keep him involved in Coaching strategies & tactics, which suggests longer term plans for him.

Yes. He won NSW Cup Player of the Year. He's pretty small, about the size of Reed Mahoney (Eels hooker). He has a great pass, can tackle, has a running game and most importantly can play 80 minutes. That's about all you need for the fundamentals of playing hooker.

His passing and running isn't as good as Liddle, but his tackling and fitness is better.

Don't see the point in signing a second unknown quantity at hooker. He could only be signed if at least one of Reynolds or Mbye are released. Walters and Brittain would be two very similar players playing the same exact role in a squad which has a number of gaps to fill.

Signing two hookers with a combined total of only a couple of first grades games would be a massive gamble. Sign one unknown and one known quantity. Unless Brittain is maybe on a second tier deal and is contracted to the Magpies...

Walters is a five eighth who Melbourne used at hooker once, he would be there to cover the halves. I mean we are hanging our hat on a 35 year old five eighth, not a sound policy

Madge has directly mentioned Walters being a solid hooker and adding competition for that position. Apparently he's played there a lot in QLD Cup, but i've mostly seen him named at 5/8.

I have a rabid Brisbane East Supporter who tells me Walters has never started in 9 or even filled in that much..

@851 A young 28 yo Cody Walker has been doing OK lately.

Yep he is 29, will be 30 in January, he played for the Gold Coast, Penrith and Melbourne, before making his NRL debut at age 26 for the Rabbitoh's.

I think Madge is all smoke and mirrors, I would say he has a good idea Grub is going, Walters will be in the halves, and the other Billy at hooker, of course as my wife often tells me, I am wrong

Musgrove at the players end of season drinks (guessing he might be on the roster for 2020 if found not guilty)

He would be a great addition to our forwards and would be not expensive. I know a Souths fans who rates Musgrove very highly.

Liddle and Madge reaction cam 😳

@851 Look, NO.

Cody Walker combines well with Adam Reynolds. But we have Marshall and Walters's kid. We don't need another 5/8. We need a hooker reserve as Liddle is not up to 80 min.

Although I reckon another rabbit could be an option, Reynolds.
Move Brooks to 5/8, he belongs there, his game management sucks, His speed and line passing rocks. We need to get Brooks out of Halfback.

Don't get me wrong at all. I am 100% behind Brooks. He stuck with us we stick with him and it is good to see this loyal clubman. But move him to 5/8 or even fullback. Get Sezer or an actual halfback to steer the team....

Thats a thought. Would Ricky take Josh Reynolds for Sezer?

Again its a good buy he will cheap, its a position of need and now we have competition at the spot. The best trainer/player out of reynolds, britian, Walters, mbye, liddle will get the kid. At least one of those should do a job for a few years until simpkins is ready

I think Liddle is the man to miss out. I feel that end of next year once recovered from injury (again) he will be given the opportunity to test the market. Sometimes you just need a change of scenery for the good of both player and club.

Think you are totally wrong.

Liddle is the best DH in the Club - lots of players get injured.

Madge has a high opinion of Liddle - don't think he will be the one testing the market myself.

I will go the other way. Not really. An average player who is now 25 and despite going through a few clubs is yet to make any impact on the NRL.

An updated version of Matt McIllwrick. We should be aiming higher

Your a good judge, best player in reserve grade, where there are some very good players. “ we should be aiming higher “ Ok, at whom?

Anyway it’s only another rumour, so when and if it happens you and your fellow travellers can go into another meltdown.

Fair dinkum, if we signed Reg Gasnier some people on here wouldn’t be happy.

I believe that Madge is making a genuine attempt to strengthen our roster. He is a premiership winning coach and knows what it takes. We should all be behind him in his endeavour.

As mentioned above McIllwrick was ISP player of the year before we signed him. Maybe we can get him back

Yep he can put the witches hats out.

I wasn’t saying we should sign Walker, it was in reference to signing a 25 year old Walters who has played 2 games. I was saying you can sign a mid twenties player who hasn’t played NRL and have it work out

Either is hoping a 25 year old veteran of 2 NRL games will become an overnight success

Damien Cook is 28yo & didn’t cement a first grade spot until last year .

Cody Walker debuted at 26yo

Not every player is recognised early or follows the same path to first grade .

Saw this snippet re a discussion between Madge & Lomax at Dally M awards:

Tigers revved up for Lomax

There were a few interested onlookers at the Dally M awards last night during the post-event function at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney.

It's already well known Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire recently met with Dragons back Zac Lomax about the potential of joining the club.

The pair were again spotted in conversation on Wednesday night.
