Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Can I ask a serious question . How do people draw their evaluation figures eg. “I wouldn’t pay more than 500k for this person” ?
If 330k is league average (30 man roster , 9.9 mil cap ) , wouldn’t that be a reasonable starting point . Eg. Eisenhuth . I would say he’s an average to below average player . So to me his value would be 250-330k .
This gets more complicated however when you consider position value . Like , what portion of your salary cap do you allocate to each position .
So if average is 4% , would you allocate 5 % to Johnston .
I kind of think you would .

A players value can only be measured by how much a club is prepared to pay to get him signed up. For that reason fans are the worst at estimating what a player is worth and are usually way off the mark because most of us want more for cap money than what is realistically available. Aside from Roosters supporters of course who have room for them all.

@tigeress - I think a recent article somewhere hit it on the head- our last foray into high priced contracts for players- Reynolds, Matulino and Packer- was and is a disaster due to inadequate diligence at the precontract assessment stage- inadequate or non existant medicals, price way over equivalent contracts, too long a period for ageing players and rushed, panic buying. I'm glad the WT board is a bit wary and wanting greater assessment this time with Mitchell if it goes ahead.

I agree with what you have said here, and I too am glad the board is checking this bloke out as we do not want to look like an incompetent badly run outfit any longer........

Didn't Jennings miss most of preseason because Todd would not green light the signing.

might explain a poor start but halfway through the year you'd think he would pick up on some things

Yes, he mostly continued training with Souths whilst he awaited clearance. I assume the clearance delay was NRL HQ checking on the WT salary cap space with due regards to the penalty from the Robbie Farah nothingburger that we got pinged for.

To me the evaluation is simple. We paid these three guys best part of $750k pa each

Is Latrell worth 1.33 Packers/Reynolds/Mats?

Yes, diligence done, let's get on with it

How did we end up at $1.3mil? The last time Hooper had good info on our club was from his last membership email.

Roosters apparently offered 650k which reportedly Latrell was not happy with then Roosters offered 800k but withdrew to probably to save face. I am guessing Nick did not want to get done in a bidding war with the mighty cashed up Wests Tigers.

if he is still under contract to them for whatever he's on, why don't we just say we'll pay half his salary next year and then offer him whatever the contract is after?

Just a random number Hooper came up with and everyone is running with it.

I reckon his form did pick up. But he'd been stamped as a dud by then.

I think we should forget about mitchell for a bit and focus on a world class second rower or prop, we need one to lead our young gun forwards such as garner, chee kam, aloai and twal

Idk about you, but I think we could do with a world class fullback. Not many of those around.

I'd have a gun fullback over any other position in our team at this point.

The problem with Jennings is this year he didn’t have GI inside feeding him good ball and all he had to do was fall over the try line.

Phil Gould summed it up pretty well a while back. He said one club would pay overs for a player when another club wouldn’t pay anywhere near that figure purely came down to the needs of a clubs roster. If a club needed to strengthen their halves roster or needed a good hooker then they would pay more to strengthen those areas compared to other clubs who had reasonable strength in those areas.

Yup all of his tries r exactly that, pick and fall

A example would be when we versed the titans.... he scored a try by himself 3m from the line by going from dummy half

@cqtiger The problem we have is that we aren't that strong in any position.

I really think that our roster is under rated. OK, it’s not the strongest roster but we’ve just missed the finals for a number of years now so it’s not the weakest roster either.

Agree- we are only a player or two of quality away from really competing well in the final 8. The question is whether we can actually get such player/s. Certainly the stronger clubs and NRL HQ are doing us no favours.

Example- where is the NRL investigation into the shennanigans of Matterson and Parra being fingered as the instigator of this?

If it was us doing it to a parra player, then I think we would already have sanctions put on us

WT are favourites to sign Zane Tetevano for 2020. Tetevano started for NZ under Madge last weekend.
