Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Think he can prob handle the full 80 but id think you will see Walters or Reynolds with 20 mins off the bench and then backing up for injuries in halves or a roving lock role if needed off the bench. Other option is obviously ET to be back up and to play a split role with benji for 20 mins

Two more spots need to be filled by season kick-off, plus one more by June 30. The Tigers are still hopeful one spot will be filled by rookie Parramatta prop Stefano Utoikamanu.

A top-quality outside back remains at the top of coach Michael Maguire's wish list. Maguire has always been known for his ability to identify a player's worth and not budge on that amount.

Tigers chief executive Justin Pascoe told the Herald on Tuesday the Tigers had avoided falling into the trap of having to pay 'overs' for quality players.

Pascoe said for the first time in a long time they had the luxury of having cash to splash on decent players when most rival clubs were still juggling their cap for this season and 2021.

"When there are reports we have cap space, every player who comes on to the market is linked with us,'' Pascoe said.

"The great challenge for us in recent months has been balancing that huge expectation from fans who read these media reports, and making sure we're making strategic decisions in regards to adding value to what is already a strong roster.

"Having cap space at this time of year allows us the opportunity to be strategic and leverage of other clubs who might have challenges with their cap space.

"This is a position we haven't been in for four years and it's taken us a long time to get here. We just have to be patient.''

When Mitchell was unveiled as Souths' latest signing at Redfern on Monday afternoon, he said he would have regretted rushing into a lucrative four-year deal on the table from the Tigers.

Pascoe, however, felt Mitchell was referring to money rather than taking a swipe at the Tigers.

Negotiations with Mitchell lasted about a month and were abandoned well before Christmas – and never got anywhere near $1.2 million a season, said Pascoe.

Adam Doueihi was expected to wear the Souths No.1 jersey before Mitchell's signing and has since been linked to the Tigers. Doueihi would be a handy pick-up for the Tigers because of his versatility but is on a heavily back-ended deal. His pay packet is not one the Tigers are prepared to entertain.

Some Tigers fans have questioned the big money splurged on Russell Packer and Josh Reynolds who have both struggled with injury, while Ryan Matterson felt at the end of last season he was not being paid enough and sulked before being released to join Parramatta. Kiwi international Esan Marsters was also allowed to switch to North Queensland.

The Tigers spent last week in Brisbane where they enjoyed a bonding session with Mbye seen as the early favourite to take over Robbie Farah's No.9 jersey.

"A top-quality outside back remains at the top of coach Michael Maguire's wish list." If one cannot be located we will consider Alex Johnston!!

Am I crazy to think Simpkin will get game time at hooker this season?

It depends

If he has a great off season

And is killing it..... in cc

It might just take a injury tho at the backend

I wouldn't rule it out. Kid can play and he's pretty solid too.

I have really liked what I have seen to date. Solid build and very creative young player with attitude.
If he stays healthy and keeps his feet on the ground, I believe Liddle will have a battle on his hands to hold on to the hooking spot.

Mbye the early favourite at hooker. Thoughts?

Would that mean a Momo/ Talau centre pairing?

Yep. Sounds good to me.

I would like to see him stay with us and have a similar career to Smjth

Conspiracy theory - I keep wondering why roosters were so keen to gift us a fullback.
Only thing I can come up with is Tedesco is approachable nov this year.

So much media speculation but we are really playing it cool

Strange that Doueihi is on a heavily backended contract. I would have thought they have him signed for next to nothing.

Does not gel well with their plans for Latrell either. They'll have to pump Latrell up beyond 2020, unless he's rubbish this year.

Your taking what he has said way out of context

Some players are asking to be paid overs and we are not interested in paying overs anymore

None of us know for certain who we have talked to but I am sure many a quality player has been spoken about and a few querries about these players would have been made

IMO the managers of some of these players would be trying to milk us for every cent and would also be looking at a long contract at an inflated price for their clients
Does this ring any bells for you yet

I don't think Pascoe will fall into the same traps as he did in the past like he did with Cleary signing long over inflated contracts
That's what got us into this position

Pascoe has and experienced coach with him now that knows what he wants in a player and he won't accept hand me downs unless they are suited to our needs

It's a game of Cat and Mouse and we need to be patient and set our own traps

I will put it another way for you
Tigers are Cats and our Cheese is "money". This big cheese will lure a big mouse out of his hidey hole soon
We all know that mice can't resist cheese
You just need to be patient and then when the mouse is nibbling you pounce

Hope that helps

Other than the 4 years since we had similar cap space bit, as it was about two and a half years ago that they were splashing cash around.

Wouldn't Latrell's contract already have a set amount for the club option in 2021?

I don't think we are signing another forward for the 2020 season as we seem to have a plethora of forwards .. if you take into account our roster with that young Para prop:

Packer
Mikaele
Musgrove
Clark
Utoikamanu
Twal
Eisenhuth
Garner
Aloiai
Leilua
Lawrence
McQueen
Taylor
CheeKam

Who's gonna miss out ??
