We have to applaud Madge. Souths want AD off their books. He simply isn’t going to play first grade. All clubs would expect them to at least contribute 100k for each year or they can have a 600k reserve grader
He wont play reggies, he will be their 14 and an excellent one.
I am a big Madge fan, but recruitment is his weakness.
Crowe and Richo recruited South stars.
Madge not budging so far has got us what? The weakest 1-5 in the comp. Not a single back added to last year's weak backline that lacked pace and strike, Fonua and Esan gone, Benji at 35 expected to play every week. No pace, no strike, no first string kicker.
Madge's rhetoric sounds nice, but reality is different.
Crowe and Richo signed Sam Burgess and Greg Inglis, Madge coached a backline of juniors in Reynolds, Keary, Johnston, Gray, Av’au, etc. Players no-one had heard of before Madge got hold of them. How can you say recruitment is his weakness? Looking at his team at Souths, I’d say it’s his strength. He didn’t pay overs for any of those premiership winners.
Take Inglis and the Burgii out of that team and they win nothing.
Same could be said for Reynolds, Keary etc
For sure, but I’m saying that without Richo and Crowe Souths wouldn’t have won. Madge had really good, powerful and influential people around him. Here he’s got Pascoe. Bit of a step down in terms of influence.
Yes, you’re right. My point is, and always has been, that all superstars start somewhere. Madge has a record of winning with nobodies who became stars. I believe he can identify early talent and get the best out of it. I’m optimistic this season not because we’ve signed a great bunch of superstars but because we have a super coach.
I think Madge is a good coach but a poor recruiter and I’ve seen nothing to change my view on that.
