It was more about freeing the Roster spot and using all of Matterson's money to upgrade other players

So yes we didn't get anything from Pawa but were able to upgrade Twal, Talau and Garner ,around the same time..

Then sign Leilua L Walters Musgrove and have spots still in hand to sign Joey Douiehi later on with the others that had left in Farah Funua and Marsters..

Also wrks both ways didn't see many complaints about releasing Marsters to the Cowgirls..hmmmm

This guy gets it.

However can’t see reason for Thompson release apart from keeping player and manager happy.

Titans are certainly benefiting from it not so much us.

This is true also as releasing Thompson really had no benefit as he plays in a position we lacked depth and have been found out with injuries and suspension..

It's all about the balance..The Club lost out there..

You'd have to think there was a target there that didn't pan out. Madge doesn't strike me as some sort of benevolent figure.

What I don't get is we fought hard to keep Thompson about a year ago and then he becomes surplus to requirements

As far as I was concerned he was our 1st back up fullback and 1st back up winger ...possibly even a starter when you take in Jennings lack of form

Especially with Momo at Melbourne

We were thin in the backline even before Corey left. I just doubt that Thompson was released purely out of benevolence.

Unless they are angling for someone that is taking time to sort out , it looks like a dumb move

I think that it was an opportunity for Thompson to get a few year deal with good $s that WT could not match.
So WT allowed his request for release before the deal disappeared.

Corey was on radio up here the other night and said he was approached about a longer deal and ask Tigers about it. They were happy to let him go to secure a longer deal and knew he was brought up in Brisbane and had family up here. He said Tigers were very good for him about it so I think he may not of been in our longer term plans anyway.

Billy Walters has taken up his player option for 2021 and will remain at WT (SMH)

I didn’t even know he had a player option thought he was signed until then anyway. Good to hear he took it though

Good, he might surprise given a chance at his natural position, at the very least he can cover the halves next year instead of Benji, and can cover hooker as well, hope he kills it tomorrow

I think so too, and I think he has a fair shot at being a long term 6 for us

The worst recent recruitment mistake the club made was letting Papenheuzen walk before they had an answer from Tedesco. Hopefully they are on the right track now with Madge signing quality youngsters and not over paying for the likes of Reynolds, Mbye, Packer and Matulino chasing a quick fix.

Do i like the idea of paying Matto in 2020? No. Would I be ok to pay him 20-30k

20-30K? If he stays for the preseason you've paid him 1/3 of his salary, which is going to be way more than 30K. You are looking at $100K+.

The reason they couldn’t hold onto Matterson and force eels to release Stefano was Matterson was leaving the club either way - if they kept him after November they would’ve had to start paying his contract which would’ve come out of our cap and it would’ve been cheaper for eels.

Eels knew that so they denied the Stefano release and waited for Matterson. I’d much prefer it this way compared to having to pay Matterson to play for eels.

What are you on about - Matterson was signed until the end of 2021- he wasn't going anywhere without a release. We wouldn't of paid parra a cent. We would have been paying a disgruntled sook to sit out the season if he refused to play - nothing more. So he would have been a good bargaining chip if we hadn't been so keen to release him.

There’s no way the club could’ve kept him his position was untenable. Keep him in reserve grade and you’re paying his contract to do nothing but upset the playing group.

The club had no choice but to release him, and they didn’t want to pay him to play at another club so they let him go

The original post was about why didn't we keep him a few months longer to force Parras hand in releasing Stefano. Someone posted that he was going anyway and that we would have been paying parra for him to play if we didn't release him. Thats what my post is about - nothing about the untenable situation - i couldn't give a rats that we released him - however we played it really badly.

That’s what I said, and it’s true. As soon as it’s past November you start paying a players contract. If we kept him after November we would have to start paying him when he would get a release either way and it would come out of our cap. That’s why he got released at that time.

The club tried getting a player swap from clubs but clubs knew they could wait and he would get a release anyway. Club was in a crap position, lose-lose really and we can thank Matto for that.

I know all that - we are talking about 2 different things - I am merely commenting on the choices we had - yep we could have paid him and made him sit out the season - we chose not to but in doing so we reduced any chance of using his dummy spit to our advantage.

Unfortunately there was no way we could’ve taken advantage of it. Better than paying him to sit in reserves and go elsewhere after a few months

The player managers and the NRL(Farah case) know were a soft touch, and we always end up losing out.And when the boot is on the other foot,we never win
Need to show some spine at some stage or this wont change.Eels timing wasnt ideal, but still do-able and we got rolled by everyone again
Maybe we need Marina back..?

Show me the club that keeps the agitating player, legitimately. I honestly can't think of a single player that stayed on with a club when he didn't want to. It's lose-lose.

Gorden Tallis is the only one I can think of who sat out time, but that was his own decision (rather than play for St George), they didn't pay him and it was during Super League. Tallis trained the whole year with the Broncos and St George didn't pay him, they just refused to release him.

Josh Addo Carr at Storm.

Jason Saab is another...and most we dont hear about as theyre not made public. But youd have to think Arrow wld be at Souths in a heartbeat,Vunivali wld want the huge Reds offer yesterday.etcetc...but most have the decency to serve out their contracts or management that can negotiate with the player like JAC.
We always seem to be the victim

Well Jason Saab still has half a season to go to see if Dragons release him or not. He only asked for a release a few weeks ago.

The other guys, there's a difference between agitating to leave and asking to leave. JAC asked to leave Storm said ok, after this year. That appears to be the end of it. He's playing every week and his form is ok. Same with Stefano, he asked to leave too, but Parra said no and he copped that decision, kept training and has now been selected to play.

For the blokes who drop form or refuse to train/contribute, you can't keep them on.

Isaiah Papali’i looking for a new club, wants to play second row. Could be a decent, cheap signing to play as a bench second rower if we don’t sign a high profile player there. He’s only 21 and isn’t a bad player at all.

Exactly. They behave like d&&&cks because they know it will get an immediate result at WTs.Cld u imagine the Storm or Dessie or Wayne putting up with that?
Were a soft touch and need to stand one of these guys up sooner rather than later.
We also need to lobby support of ARL to enforce contracts.
Suli/Moses/Matterson/Cleary..and theres pronbably more..and however many there are,it all stops once you push back on someone and set a precedent

He has an offload in him, looks dangerous when he runs the ball, we could do worse, and we previously have

Tedesco probably played the club like a violin, he seems like an egotistical, arrogant flog that would do that. Can't fully put the blame on the club if players are sly.
