Geez people get excited and carried away here.

Staines has only played 2 games in NRL. One was in a rout. He is not getting picked in first grade currently and supposedly Penrith are going to be happy to let him go.......but he is the next Ponga and worth over $500K pa?

Ponga had always been labelled a young superstar. Staines has just been a good young footballer. Huge difference.

BB have you just entered this thread now? Over the last 4 pages, 4 posters specifically said we should pay Staines $500k or more and two posters have used Ponga as a reference for Staines (excluding the comparisons in size with Ponga).

Who do you feel we should target?


Im not suggesting that Staines isnt worth signing, but definitely not at $500K pa for 4 years. No player who has played 2 games on the wing in first grade is worth that. Yes it worked with Ponga, Ive seen nothing to suggest Staines is Ponga MK2 and the fact he cant crack in the panthers team and that they are going to let him go, also suggests he isnt.

Who'd Id target? I think we need a 6 more than anything. Havent really seen enough in AD to suggest its him, but there also arent any stand out options available, Burton may be. Yes we also need some pace in the backs and if we could get a JAC, Staines etc for the right price then you grab them.

I think you're underestimating how good Staines is, but I guess time will tell. I'm not suggesting he's necessarily worth $500k either (yet), but what I am saying is that unfortunately, due to the last 9 years of failure, we have to pay overs to attract talent. I also think after a couple of years in first grade, $500k will be far lower than his value.

We'll have to wait and see.

Christain Welsh this year is playing on an option in his favour with the Storm..by reports was all set to be signed by Parra for this year.. did his ACL so they went cold..so took his option to stay at Melbourne..

And here's me thinking the NRL was still stuck in the stone ages regarding player contracts.

Would be useful in the Staines negotiations if the club is pursuing it.

4 yrs seems a stretch but maybe 2yrs at 350 - 400K to evaluate. Then if he's a goer, club option for a 3rd with a pay increase and a nice extension on top of it. All that's assuming other offers aren't higher.

But I'm sure the club would have every avenue mapped out

Stains has played on the wing for Penrith and done a good job there.
So it’s an option of fullback or 5/8 does / doesn’t work out for Doueihi.

We seem to want to have a team of left foot in game kickers. Which really concerns me. There preferred side is on the left so we are going be having to decide who best suits that side between Burton / Brooks and Doueihi.

I’m not sure people realise the direction Madge and Hartigan are going in terms of recruitment.

It’s pretty obvious by now.
Resign current performers on low to mid range (within player x expected value)
Sign talented youth on over’s
Add some mid to low value experienced players.

The end goal that we will have an existing core of our best performers and be boosted by a sprinkling of young electric and powerful talent, harnessed by experienced old heads.

Madge has been toying with the idea of Packer being one of these old heads (since he is one contract 1 more year) however I feel he hasn’t shown enough so will be put to pasture. ‘Won’t be in the side, even if still in the 30’
Eisenhuth and even Taylor have probably even jumped his position in terms of worth to the team.

Ok so the problem with our position is about 5 new players need to be injected into this team.
2 young guys ain’t going to make a difference.
Plus other clubs would recruit these players on low contracts. Unfortunately to get them in we are over paying on potential.

However if we can’t move on our high paid under performers we won’t be able to afford signing these players and certainly will not be able to sign a player like JAC.

The club is stuck with a Mbye and Packer and will have to look at moving on lower value attractive options like Brooks, Twal or Garner to make the necessary cap space.

If we can add stains for $350 (next years salary) and Burton for $400 it would be a good deal. But it’s unlikely given our current salary position and I would be tempted to move one of those players mentioned above to accommodate. Preferably Brooks.
Got to know when to hold them and when to fold them.
Be interesting to see if we can do it whilst retaining the exisiting roster so that it puts more pressure on the existing players to perform.

Jennings was a try scoring machine at Souths before coming here so be careful paying overs to a player on the end of well oiled attack.
Now if Crichton was available then a big YES

Staines debut was a lot of catching and diving over the line.

He looks good, but be very wary of paying overs for potential. For every Ponga, there are a number of Milford, Jack Birds, Matt Moylans and Ash Taylors running around in the NRL.

The Club would rely on its junior development staff. We have done well in the last couple of years so we should have confidence in our knowledge of Staines.

So just like every other club then.

What’s he played, two games? Even $300k a season is overs.

We need to pay up to get talent, even if it's potential talent.

If you were interviewing for the same type of job with 5 different employers and got 5 offers, what would make you take the job with the least desirable employer? Money.

Unless we take some risks and buy on potential, we're going to be left with older, broken players and other clubs cast offs. Gotta role the dice otherwise we'll be crap forever.

I don’t see him being offered that anywhere. Give him $1.2million over 4 years. We need to take risk for sure and I think paying him even that is a risk, he can’t be expecting 500 grand a season.

Get rid of Grub & Brooks get in Burton let Benji play on but get a Gareth Ellis/Beau Scott type next to him to cover all his turn style tackles.

I would rather see Benji go & keep Brooks, whilst Benji has been a great servant to the Tigers he is too dominant a player & appears to stifle Brooks game. The last time Brooks played without Benji he was Dally M halfback of the year.

I think Benji should go too but I’m pretty sure he played alongside Brooks when he won the dally M. Wasn’t that 2018?

Staines is still out with the hamstring injury he picked up part way through his 2nd game and has not been available for selection. Not sure what Cleary will do once he's fit but it's unlikely he'll bump Mansour or To'o for Staines at this stage I would think.

$500K per season for him over 4 seasons would be a massive and unnecessary gamble on cost and duration.
