WESTS Tigers back-rower Curtis Sironen will tomorrow have neck surgery to shave a bulging disc that has been sapping strength in his shoulder.
Sironen injured his neck in a tackle during the Tigers’ round nine clash with the Roosters, but opted to battle on playing two more matches before withdrawing from last Friday’s clash with the Gold Coast.
Curtis’ father, former Test forward Paul Sironen, confirmed that the 21-year-old will undergo surgery on tomorrow.
“He’s had this bulging disc is his neck, he’s going in to have it shaved tomorrow,” Paul tells RLW.
“He’s got a disk compressed on his nerve, so he’s been playing the last month with no strength in his shoulder . . . and limited strength in one of his arms.
“It (the surgery) will take pressure off the nerve . . . and get the strength back in his arm.
Sironen is expected to miss up to four games. The hope is that he will return for the Tigers’ round 19 clash with Brisbane.
“I reckon he’ll be back after the bye (in round 18), touch wood,” Sironen Snr says.
“Johnny Sutton and Michael Jennings have both had the same procedure done.”
Sironen has had wretched luck with injuries since making his first grade debut in 2012.
“It’s surgery number eight and he’s not even 22,” he says.
