Skando injured at pub

JOHN Skandalis, one of the Wests Tigers' favourite sons, is recovering in hospital from head injuries - the cause of which remains a mystery to club officials.

Skandalis, a member of the Tigers' 2005 premiership team who returned to first grade this season during an injury crisis, was rushed to Prince Of Wales Hospital at Randwick after he was found injured in a park.

The 33-year-old discharged himself hours after the incident, but was then admitted to Campbelltown Hospital on Tuesday where he underwent surgery.

Skandalis, the Tigers' Toyota Cup strength and conditioning coach, spent yesterday under observation and was expected to be discharged today.

A source yesterday claimed Skandalis was knocked unconscious after being attacked by three men.

But Wests Tigers CEO Stephen Humphreys said the ex-prop told the club he was injured in a fall.

He was readmitted to hospital after suffering an infection.

A source told The Daily Telegraph the ex-prop was ambushed and reportedly knocked unconsious after leaving the Golden Sheaf Hotel in Double Bay, where he had been socialising with Tigers players.

"He was with his brother-in-law, who is a mixed martial arts expert and he actually saved John," the source said.

"John was rushed to hospital and then discharged himself because he didn't want the media to get wind of it, but he had to go back for surgery. It's a head injury - pretty brutal. He is not in a good way at all."

Skandalis was recovering in a surgical ward yesterday, but was unavailable for comment.

A Campbelltown Public Hospital spokeswoman said Skandalis was under observation and was expected to be discharged today.

The incident, which was not reported to police, allegedly occurred in a park minutes after the Tigers foundation member left the Sheaf in New South Head Rd.

Doesn't sound too good at all. Hopefully Skando has no further reoccurrences wth his recovery.

Out of all league players, Skando??? (If he was indeed set upon)

what is Sydney coming too, no wonder I insist on driving my loved ones in and out of city on a fri and sat night

Jesus…....Best Wishes Skando........this is shocking.........

Get well soon....Nice Christmas present for the family.......

Welcome to any major City in the world in a holiday season.

The Sheaf is like Coogee, The Gong or the Cross. Full of heroes who can't handle their booze

It seem to be happening not only to high profile people but to all.Get well Skando and hope all ends up well for you.

Hope the mayor's OK.

But why does the paper gives 2 reasons for the injury - first the attack and then Humphreys saying it was a fall ??

3 on 1 sounds like a fair fight. Imagine braging to your mates about that. I was in a fight with Skando but I needed two other people to hep me. Hope he recovers quickly.

The Sheaf is the lowest joint …right up there with the Mean Fiddler,Coogee Bay etc etc...why our Tigers chose to meet/socialise there of all places is a mystery??!!...there are a tone of places on Darling Street in Tiger Town which would gladly close their doors to give the boys some privacy to party...a very sad story...get well soon Skando! Any douche bag who attacks a man like Skando is scum and deserves everything they get!

This is why I hate going to clubs late at night now. Too many drunken troublemakers who act like monkeys. Hope Skando is ok :frowning:

It makes me sick that people are so mean at Christmas!!

I went to finish off some shopping today and unfortunately saw a man laying in the middle of a busy road with people all around, he was bleeding and not moving… I thought he had been hit by a car, as it turns out, the poor OLDER gentleman had been the victim of road rage and was bashed with a club lock on Xmas Eve... that is appalling!!

It is Xmas time! What is wrong with people!!

the reason they wouldn't want a pub on darling st, with the doors locked for privacy is that they want to socialise, just like every one of us like to do every now in a while. Why should they be locked away - the losers who bash people should be the ones locked away.

I have absolutely no problem with them wanting to go out and have a normal night with mates before Christmas - toatally understandable…but why the Sheaf? A KNOWN dodgy joint, full of drugs, lowie chicks and try hards and, more to the point, with a seemingly direct leek to the press! Very poor choice, there are plenty of decent low key joints around fellas!!
