SMH Article 'We’ve lost faith in them’: Balmain consider shock exit from Wests Tigers merger

Anyone else feels like a skills matrix sounds a bit MBA/university wank?
A bit like kpi's?

Really it isn't thst hard?
Does the applicant seem a idiot? Dont appoint.
Does the applicant have skills that will benefit the business? Short list them
Will the applicant make decisions based on what is best for the wests tigers? Shortlist them still.

Need to distinguish between the businesses. One is a gambling, entertainment, and hospitality business, the other is professional sports organisation. They require different skill sets. Someone like Dennis Burgess with his experience in the entertainment industry may bring relevant skills to HBG. The football club needs him and the rest of the HBG, Magpies (made up of 4 HBG directors), and BTRLFC boards to recognise if they're best fit for the WT board.
Problem being they will be firing themselves, and this time may not have the opportunity to manipulate themselves back again.
It’s been clear as day for over 10 years the WestsTigers board have not been able to do their job.
In my opinion many on the HGB board make me shake my head as to their relevance to anything even in HBG’s other concerns….apart from rubber stamping recommendations from the people who actually do run the business.

It’s a reference point to make sure the right people are hired .
It’s no different to a tradie having a list of non- negotiables that he won’t budge on .
Except this will be a spreadsheet with various candidates , and I’m assuming a chart of all the skills that would make up the ultimate board member, and how many of those “ticks” each candidate would have .
Literally if you’ve been for a job interview in the last 15 years at any big company they would have one of some kind .
Like if you’re interviewing 20 people for a role , how do you remember exactly 💯 what each persons skills have .
Liking the “cut of his jib” isn’t really a smart way to hire people . That’s how we got into this position in the first place .

I wonder how many other clubs use a skills matrix?
Really cant see Nick or Rusty or other clubs using one tbh

I would suggest None...

Some clubs are actually accountable to the members (in different forms)
But MOST clubs are actually run by professionals.
- Not self serving imbeciles trying to one up the other self serving imbeciles from the other half of the Merger
Who are more interested in the dressing up for corporate functions and free wine for the missus than actually running a professional football club.

Some of them wouldn't have enough high end business acumen to lick a stamp
- yes Dennis, I'm talking about you...

I’m well aware HBG own 90% …but if the CEO is a smart as Roy Masters says ( and he wouldn’t be biased towards Wests would he) then why would he put up with some of the blatantly obvious underperforming, unqualified, self serving buffoons who have been in place for years on end?

They appoint the CEO. They recruited and appointed Simon Cook. HBG is a successfully run and profitable organisation.

Souths use it. Most comprable organisation codify what is needed on their boards. Listen to Richo's earlier podcasts with James Graham before he became our CEO talking about how Boards become problematic and what he had to deal with at Souths, and how it got fixed.

Do you read anything apart from this forum?

It was a breath of fresh air to hear Richo speak yesterday. A far cry from the previous CEO and Chair. Calling out some clowns, outlining how we've changed and where we're going.

It was also really encouraging to hear about some good governance in the form of a skills matrix to help get the right people on the board.

I just finished up working for a very dysfunctional company with a board of directors who were appointed without any kind of skills matrix. Whoever said a fish rots from the head down wasn't kidding.

Anyone who watched Dennis Burgess (the board member) Screaming like a scolded cat and strutting around like Mick Jagger with Cerebral Palsy in front of our fans and sponsors at a home game about 10 years ago, Would have a fair gauge what he offers the club.

This club has given me some embarrassing moments as a fan, That tops the list
(And don't see it getting toppled any time soon)
You saw it Gunners yeah? @GNR4LIFE?
I did. My first reaction was “WTF is Rod Stewart doing here?”

Hagipentalis didn't miss Danny Stapleton on SEN this morning....
😂😂😂

Was funny to hear Stapleton come out and say the Board is united this that and the other - then have Chammas double down with the reply he'd seen the emails....
Form how I read it,
Danny then backtracked somewhat saying "the emails are confidential in nature"
Or words to that effect...

It's not a Wests v Balmain thing - It's a Wests Tigers thing....
the whole lot of them are rotten and have allegiances.

Get some proper Businessmen on the board, Some experts in a few different Fields....
Even Stapleton, how does he meet the Matrix Metre...
I've only ever known him to be a Board Member - Whatever he does outside it, It can't be a very big deal.....

Meanwhile the Roosters have the likes of Dave Gyngall (Boss of 9) James Packer 9a Bloody Packer) Bouris (Self made sqillionaire) and Politis (Amongst others)
We're not even in the running

I like how Richo talked about a lot of the stuff from the WT board that had been successful up until that date. However, it's just gone through a change with the swap of 2 members.

So the line has been drawn in the sand. If we start to see rejection of any proposals or leaks to the media, we know where to point.

Bull capital.

I'm happy for the board changes and happier Pascoe is gone.

But my rebuttals were all in reference to the treachery from Balmain's board.as per the article.
I dont think anyone disagrees with you MM. The balmain guy was out of line.

But I think most of us see it as inconsequential. He has no power and has been rebuffed by a whole squad of people now. He's living in the past and 99% of us are moving forward.

Once we get these reforms through and setup something like Penrith, I hope we hear nothing about any board members ever again.
