Middlesbrough and Southampton could not be separated as a fascinating first leg of their Championship play-off somehow finished goalless.

After the build-up was spiced up by accusations of Saints spying on a Boro training session, the home side completely dominated the first half.

They had 17 shots to none from the visitors and came closest when Tommy Conway struck the inside of the post.

Saints improved after the break and could even have pinched victory late on when captain Taylor Harwood-Bellis thundered a header against the bar.

But with no goals scored, it is set up to be decided at St Mary's in the second leg on Tuesday.

Hull City and Millwall played out a goalless draw in a physical first leg of their Championship play-off semi-final at the MKM Stadium.

The home side nearly scored inside the first two minutes when forward Mo Belloumi cut in from the left and hit a shot at a tight angle that hit the outside of the near post.

Camiel Neghli's long-range effort skimmed the post on its way wide as the Lions pushed for an opener, and Oli McBurnie was not quite able to make a solid connection on a Yu Hirakawa cross down the other end as the game opened up in the final 20 minutes.

Femi Azeez tested Hull goalkeeper Ivor Pandur after coming in off the right and Ryan Leonard did have the ball in the net for the visitors in the final five minutes, but it was ruled out for a foul by Tristan Crama on Charlie Hughes.

The two teams meet at The Den in the second leg on Monday.

It is the second time in three seasons that both Championship play-off semi-finals have finished goalless in the first leg.

Not sure how many ppl read this thread. But Boro mean a lot to me. I grew up in Campbelltown in the 90s but by dad was born in Middlesbrough in 1944. -- I now live in europe -- Im a Westie bogan and a BORO fan.

The game I watched today. Was probbably the most frustrating 90 minutes of football I've ever watched ever. I don't think there is a possible comparison in rugby league. 10 men playing the best games of their lives when it really mattered ruined by a terrible hopeless forward called Tommy Conway.

It was extraordinary. -- Like, imagine a red hot wests tigers side in a preliminary final and the same player bombed 3 tries to seal the game. I honestly have never seen anything like it.

Supporting BORO and Wests Tigers, I'm a masochist.

Champion @TIGERS, mate all your passion for the BORO and the Wests Tigers mirrors all of us here on the forum.
Our location is just a place on the map.
Where we each are is within our spirit, for all the boys in the teams we bleed for.
The Conway moments today happen.
The jersey goes on.
Hope is always our best friend.
