The opening game of the 2026/27 A-League Men season ended in a stalemate, with fierce rivals Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers playing out a goalless draw on Friday night at Allianz Stadium.

Played out in front of more than 30,000 fans on opening night, both sides had their chances to steal all three points but the pair couldn’t be split.

The game saw former Sydney FC boss Ufuk Talay return to Allianz Stadium for the first time since his exit from the club last season, with Talay now in charge of the Sky Blues’ arch-rivals.

The home side were the more accomplished in possession and had some joy with balls over the top of the Wanderers defense but the end product was lacking in a first half where clear-cut chances were few and far between.

The Wanderers did fashion the best opportunity of the half in the 38th minute but Liam Gillion’s low shot was comfortably saved by fit-again Sydney FC goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares.

Sydney FC have secured their long-term home, signing a 25-YEAR deal to stay at Allianz Stadium.
The Sky Blues are calling it a ‘landmark’ deal and one that will see them afforded greater control to shape the atmosphere and fan experience of their home games.

Three goals, three points and a statement start to Auckland FC's title defence against Melbourne City.

A brace on debut from Lachlan Bayliss has helped Auckland FC get their A-League Men title defence off to a winning start, as they defeated Melbourne City 3-1.

Returning home to celebrate their first-ever title win with 20,635 fans, it was Bayliss, one of Auckland’s new signings, who introduced himself in style on Saturday afternoon.

Tapped to start by Pedro Moreira, who replaced Steve Corica as coach after the latter’s move to J1 League side Yokohama F Marinos, Bayliss first struck with a highlight-reel blast in the 35th minute.

Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez left the pitch on a stretcher with a serious-looking head injury as Xabi Alonso's side won 2 nil at Everton.

Argentina World Cup winner Martinez and Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite clashed heads as they went for the ball in the 75th minute.

Branthwaite was able to continue after treatment, but the game was held up for 10 minutes as Martinez received medical care.

The 34-year-old, who was able to move his arms as he was carried off, was replaced by Mike Penders.

The game was settled by two goals from wing-back Pedro Neto, who scored at both ends of the second half.

He netted his first from Jorrel Hato's deflected cutback, then added a late second with a cool rolled finish into the bottom corner after Jordan Henderson's free-kick hit the wall.

The result gave Chelsea a first Premier League clean sheet in nine months and was Everton's first league defeat this season.

Chelsea go fourth, with Everton sitting sixth, before the rest of the weekend's games.

Liverpool staged a second-half fightback to come from behind and beat nine-man Brentford 2-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium.
NINE MEN. ONE MASSIVE COLLAPSE.
Liverpool beat Brentford 2-1 after a chaotic Premier League battle featuring TWO red cards for the hosts.Isak delivers.
Liverpool take the points.
Brentford’s unbeaten run is OVER.

Previously unbeaten Brentford paid a heavy price for the red card given to Yehor Yarmoliuk in first-half added time for a "headbutting action" - in the words of referee John Brooks - on Liverpool defender Jeremy Jacquet.

Keith Andrews' side were a goal up through Keane Lewis-Potter's superb 44th-minute header, and in control, when Yarmoliuk was dismissed - but Liverpool made the most of their numerical advantage to launch a comeback after the break.

Spain winger Victor Munoz scored a fine equaliser after 62 minutes, cutting inside to beat Brentford keeper Caoimhin Kelleher with a left-foot finish after he was released by Florian Wirtz's pass.

Alexander Isak added the second eight minutes later with a clinical strike for his fifth goal of the season, after Bradley Barcola headed down Alexis Mac Allister's cross.

Brentford's day of frustration was complete when they were reduced to nine men in stoppage time - Vitaly Janelt shown a second yellow card for a foul on Liverpool substitute Rio Ngumoha.

Fulham defeat a determined Hull City 1-0.
Fulham boss Alvaro Arbeloa says securing the club's first Premier League victory of the season before a crunch period of games for them was "massive".

The Cottagers had been winless in their previous six league matches but secured all three points against Hull City thanks to Alex Iwobi's 33rd-minute strike.

The result offered respite for head coach Arbeloa, who succeeded Marco Silva in the Craven Cottage hot seat in July but had not seen his side's promising displays translate into wins.

The result lifted Fulham's points tally to five and moved them off the foot of the table and out of the relegation zone, while Hull sit ninth.

"It's a massive game for us," Arbeloa told BBC Match Of The Day.

He pointed out key upcoming games for Fulham - at Coventry next Saturday, then an EFL Cup tie against Crystal Palace on the following Wednesday - and described that as "a massive week".

"It won't be easy, but we know how we need to play and compete. We have to be competitive in this league," Arbeloa added. "We have our way and hope we can win many games."

Arbeloa's side took the lead just after the half-hour mark in the 100th meeting between the sides in all competitions.

Hull twice failed to clear their lines, allowing Sander Berge to slide the ball into the path of Iwobi on the edge of the box.

Iwobi curled a low shot that took a deflection off Lucas Herrington and squirmed under Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, who perhaps should have done better.

Hull struggled to create much of note, with Mohamed Belloumi dragging a shot wide of the post in the second half with arguably their best effort.

The only negative for Fulham was the dismissal of Ryan Sessegnon in added time after his studs caught the back of Robinio Vaz's calf from behind.

Arbeloa said his side had been "working so hard" and "deserved" to break their duck.

"We were having the same feeling as other matches, when we were controlling the game for long spells and having good chances but didn't score," he said.

"Our rivals punish our mistakes or take their chances, but we were brilliant for 90 minutes. We controlled the game, had many chances and didn't concede any clear chances to Hull."

Manchester City beat Ipswich Town 3-2 to make it seven straight wins at the start of a Premier League season for the first time in the club's history.

Erling Haaland scored twice after Phil Foden's opener was cancelled out by Daizen Maeda to send Enzo Maresca's side six points clear at the top of the table.

This was City's first home game in the competition since being found guilty of breaking its financial rules.

After celebrating victory over Liverpool at a hostile Anfield in their first match since the verdict against the club was announced, the home fans showed their support for the club as they booed the Premier League anthem prior to kick-off and waved inflatable bananas in a recently revived tradition from the 1980s.

On the pitch, Maresca's players continued to block out the uncertainty surrounding the club's future admirably.

Haaland's double ensured City joined Chelsea (2005-06) and Liverpool (2019-20) as only the third club in Premier League history to win their first seven games of a season.

Maresca, meanwhile, is the first manager to win his first seven games in charge of a club in the competition.

Ipswich temporarily stunned a raucous Etihad Stadium with a quick response to Foden's opener, as Maeda slotted in 155 seconds later after getting the better of Marc Guehi.

But Haaland restored the hosts' advantage before half-time and later put City in control with a composed finish after being played through by Iliman Ndiaye.

The Norwegian then believed he had his hat-trick after firing in acrobatically but the goal was disallowed for a marginal offside against Enzo Fernandez in the build-up.

Zian Flemming gave Ipswich late hope by slamming in a 90th-minute penalty following a foul by Guehi on Abdul Fatawu, but City were able to see out the 12 minutes of added time.

Aston Villa continued their recent revival and stretched their unbeaten run to five games thanks to Johan Manzambi's winning goal to defeat Newcastle United 1 nil.
Aston Villa have won consecutive away league games against Newcastle for the first time in 68 years.

Switzerland midfielder Manzambi came close to joining the Magpies in the summer before moving to Villa Park instead, and showed Newcastle what they were missing when he headed in Joao Gomes' cross in the 36th minute.

Emiliano Buendia nearly doubled Villa's advantage but saw his strike bounce off the left post, with Lukas Hornicek well beaten.

Newcastle failed to register a shot on target in the first half, with the home fans booing them off at the break.

But Matthias Jaissle's side made an instant improvement, with Harvey Barnes curling an inviting cross just wide inside the opening 40 seconds of the second half.

Sven Botman, who Villa thought should have been sent off for an over-the-ball challenge on Nicolas Jackson earlier on, hit a well-struck shot on the turn with away goalkeeper Zion Suzuki making a good save.

Villa came fourth in the Premier League last season, but only picked up one point from their opening four league games of 2026-27.

But they have now picked up seven points from their past three games, progressed in the Carabao Cup and recorded a 6-0 thrashing of Fenerbahce in the Champions League.

This victory takes Villa 12th, only behind 11th-placed Newcastle on goals scored.

Championship top scorer Will Lankshear came off the bench to rescue Middlesbrough from a first home defeat of the season and deny Cardiff City in a pulsating 2-2 draw.

Lankshear – who now has 11 for the season in all competitions – had been on the bench as Cardiff raced to a two-goal lead inside the first half at the Riverside.

Fine individual efforts from Jack Moylan and Ollie Tanner threatened to earn the Bluebirds a first away win of the campaign.

But after Tommy Conway had pulled one back on 58 minutes, substitute Lankshear completed the comeback when he finished from the edge of the area to level three minutes later.

They could not find a winner, despite registering a total of 36 shots on target against a Cardiff side reduced to 10 men for the final seven minutes after a wild challenge from Gabriel Osho on Lankshear.

It was not enough to move promotion hopefuls Middlesbrough up the table, but it did preserve an unbeaten run that now stretches to nine matches.

And it was a tough lesson for Cardiff, who again caught the eye with some of their football and had worked so hard to keep Boro at bay before pressure told.

Birmingham City made it five games unbeaten in the Championship with an impressive 3-0 win over QPR.

In-form Liam Millar scored in both halves for Blues before substitute Demarai Gray's stoppage-time effort sealed a third straight win for Chris Davies' side.

Only goal difference separated the teams before the game but QPR, themselves unbeaten in five heading to the West Midlands, offered little to preserve that run.

Birmingham stay in fourth place as their strong start to the season continues, while the R's slip out of the play-off places to ninth.

The visitors wasted a huge chance to take the lead inside the opening 10 minutes when defender Boy Kemper failed to connect with a flick-on from a long throw at point-blank range.

With chairman Tom Wagner watching on, Blues started confidently after Tuesday's 4-0 win over Preston and their speedy attack was in full force when the in-form Millar gave them the lead following a counter.

Millar, on loan from Hull, found the bottom corner for his second goal in as many games after he was sent through one-on-one after 27 minutes.

Blues needed just four second-half minutes to double their lead, with Millar again finding the net after finishing another breakaway move.

Home goalkeeper James Beadle was forced into action just after the hour mark to tip an effort from Ronnie Edwards around the post as the R's enjoyed their first sustained spell of pressure in the match.

At the other end, Millar might have had his hat-trick but fired straight at QPR keeper Pierce Charles when well placed.

His replacement Gray wrapped up another good day at the office for Blues when he blasted the ball high into the net from close range late on.

West Ham United climbed to second in the Championship as Divine Mukasa's first-half goal proved enough to secure an eye-catching 1 nil victory at leaders Swansea City.

Mukasa's calm finish was the decisive moment of an engaging contest in which both sides wasted big chances.

Swansea captain Ben Cabango came closest to an equaliser when he rattled the woodwork, while goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux made a string of second-half saves to keep the home side in the game.

West Ham's victory means they are just a point behind Swansea, who remain top of the table despite losing for only the second time this season.

The Hammers are now unbeaten in nine league games since a shock home loss to Charlton Athletic in mid-August.

This was a sixth victory in their 11 second-tier fixtures since relegation from the Premier League last season, and was perhaps the most notable yet given Swansea's superb form in the early stages of this campaign.

Swansea will feel they created enough to maintain this season's unbeaten home league record, though West Ham might easily have won more comfortably given their menace in the second period.

The game had been tight, tense and without any sign of a chance until Marko Stamenic was dispossessed in his own half 11 minutes before half-time and West Ham capitalised.

Mohamadou Kante burst into the penalty area and squared for Mukasa to guide the ball beyond a helpless Vigouroux from 10 yards.

Mukasa's goal, which came through the first shot of the game at either end, prompted more attacking intent from Swansea.

Ronald unleashed a fierce drive which deflected just off target before Ben Cabango thumped a shot against the bar after Josh Tymon's free-kick was not cleared.
