Strange Tuqiri quote re training/culture

"It's been a lot quieter without those guys here, (Ryan and Heighington)" winger Lote Tuqiri observed.
"We still miss them every now and again, but we've had to move on just as they have.
"There's not been as much nonsense around training, even though we've still got a few jokers left like Liam Fulton.
"There's not as much mucking around as we did before, but in time that will all come."

Anyone slighly annoyed at the quotes? I mean, I realise he is talking more about different personalities. The fact that Ryan and Heighington were outgoing personalities, i'm sure every club has them and needs them to build a bond. However the quotes from Tuqiri are pretty loose and poorly put together. I mean a quote like mucking around at training is something you would expect from a 12 year old not a professional footballer after a season where you have bombed out big time.

I just it smacks of the fact that Sheens let things drift along and created such a culture of comfort that the players took advantage of it to an extent. Someone posted rumours last year where Sheens had to stop a training session due to 2 blokes clowning around, no idea if this had any merit. I'm sure Ryan and Heighington trained hard and they were passionate players, probably 2 of the more passionate players on the field. However the quotes makes it seem like the place was just a barrel of laughs and pranks at training with not the required focus or intensity. I just couldn't see someone like Bellemy and hopefully Potter putting up with this boys club mentality.

Anyway bottom line hopefully these departures signal the start of a new era. Whilst we have had some success over the past 7-10 years, ultimately we have been a flaky side that goes missing when things get a bit hard. Hopefully under Potter, there is more accountability at training and in matches. We might not be brilliant from day 1 however surely this will breed a better culture long term.

Ryan has been quoted that training at the Sharkies is alot different to the Tigers…he has stated its alot tougher at Cronulla...I'm glad to hear both quotes...it seems Sheens took it way too easy with the boys...and it showed in that we had no mental toughness when we needed it.

As long as the balance between work/muckin around is right.
These guys are togetrher nearly every day, if you dont enjoy what youre doing it can make it tough - especially if results arent going your way
All young blokes in a group will always carry on….as long as the balance is right

I suspect by mucking around he means light heartedness and to an extent, commeradery. I say that because of the context ie 'it will come in time'. Not his finest choice of words, but it's 3 sentences that could have come after a 3 hour training session and been part of a longer discussion. I stopped reading too much into such comments a long time ago. Reports issued at this time of the year are all about geeing up a bit of buzz and showing why this year will be better than the last no matter how good or bad things are really going.

A mate of mine played in the lower grades at the dogs with aj taumata. Aj told him he couldn't believe how relaxed tigers training was compared to all the clubs he had been at (which was like 5)

Unsurprisingly he said the storm were the most intense.

Well Potter has started to fix the obvious problems that were evident to everybody except Tim Sheens,we might finally see some consistency and reward for effort, and a stint in reggies for lack of said effort.

you could see on saturday the attitude towards the little things was as good as it's been in recent years. The kick chase was excellent all game. really like what Potter has brought to the table so far.

Weird quote from Tuquiri but having been at a few clubs himself across a few sports, he is probably better equipped than anyone to make observations on the changes

dont read too much into these things

Every side claims every off season the toughest ever.

The training sessions at the tigers are a work place, every work place needs an element of "mucking around" to use Lote's (poor) choice of words, no doubt this can go overboard, but happy players (workers) get better results.

They either man up or go down for the dirt nap!
Have all the fun you want after you win the premiership in 2013!
Potter looks like a real party animal ready to be unleashed!

Go the mighty Wests Tigers! :sign:

No Eddie I'm not upset about it Bloke was asked a question and he answered it honestly

When you go to work and the staff that put a smile on your dial aren't there its not as fun

Others are saying you can't have fun at work , stuff that we work for 60-65 years of our lives and your saying you can't enjoy it

Hope when some of you go to work and your laughing about something funny tomorrow , your boss kicks your butt or gives a written warning

Did the Tigers players take it too far, probably but thats not their fault ,thats the bosses issue

I'm actually quite pleased with Lote's comments. It definitely looks as though Potter is instilling a no-nonsense culture at the club. I'm sure he won't stop the blokes from having a laugh or two as that's all part and parcel of a work environment, but I'm glad that a player is on the record as saying that the shenanigans are far and few between now. If anything, those quotes show how little control Sheens had of the playing group.

Hopefully this discipline during training translates onto the paddock when it matters most.

I think there is a difference between joking around and having fun. Looking at the game against the eels the tigers looked bigger, sharper and best of all showed a lot enthusiasm. They are obviously doing different things at training under Potter and that he is making it fun but tough. The fact that players were training well before Xmas instead of January I think that says it all. Marshall and Anasta have stated publicly it has been the toughest and longest pre-season training they have ever had but they have enjoyed it and have had fun.

I think at the end of the day Sheens was too close to the players and they were all very comfortable with each other. Players respected Sheens who got them a grand final win in 2005 and Sheens was loyal to his favourite players who never got dropped no matter what.

Potter is what the club needed. A new voice and a different approach.

I bet Farah and Marshall will look back on their careers and appreciate Potter influence and improvement to their beloved club. Lets hope both players achieve any Grand Final win to top off their careers.

To me Sheens is the past and Potter is the future and the future looks very bright.

gee i think you guys are reading way to much into this….

they are not robots.... im sure you would find every club balances the hard work and stress with some fun, and the players mention were most likely the centre of attention in the fun department....

I agree champ settle down. The boss was too soft on them and it showed FOR YEARS. It showed in our defence and our attitude in games at times over the years. I agree that Tuqiri was talking more about team dynamics and culture. All Im saying is Lote's quotes were a bit loose coming off a rubbish season and that i think Potter will install a different culture.
