I would generally trust the teams of analysts responsible for informing PSSAP's investment decisions for the hundreds of thousands of members

Do you really trust these guys ?

To know much more than me or anyone else posting on a football forum?

Yes.

Yes.

Do you trust the data ? If you do then index funds appear to be the way to go.

Buffet famously bet on Index funds. I'm with him and the data.

I'm going SMSF shortly, investing in QLD property. A workmate of mine just did it last year, he signed up this time last year, sold his property in 12 months and gained 100K.

Keep an eye out ...rumours have it that solar wind farms are back on Annastacia's agenda again .......a certain CQ town might property values might hit a boom if you get in quick and get out quick provide a windfall ......especially as they are talking a 1500 person workforce during construction stages ....

My career has revolved around data for a long time.

What data do you have that predicts the future performance of the share market? Can you let me know what kind of ripples are going to be seen here with the impending Evergrande collapse? Likewise further natural disasters, potential global conflict, climate change and the next pandemic?

I trust that the analysts employed by superannuation funds a) aren't 'hedge fund managers' like the group that got it 'wrong' in the link you provided and b) have a more expansive and nuanced toolkit/skillset when tasked with the risk and responsibility of investing **other people's retirement funds** than some internet searching and a spiel from Warren Buffett.

They managed to get me 10-15% up last year IIRC, even accounting for the brief dip that accompanied Covid-19's arrival.

Cool - my job is the same.

I follow the Jack Bogle line of investing. It's the complete opposite of your take on it. You accept that the vast majority of people under perform the market so you don't trust anyone including yourself. I can't predict future returns. I don't believe any one can.

Pick an asset portfolio. Get the best diversification and lowest fees within that asset allocation and the best way to do that is use index funds.

My approach is a really common one for investors.

https://www.vanguardinvestments.com.au/

Vanguard are the biggest index company in the world and they've completely changed the market. Warren Buffet is a famous person who stresses this advice for the average person but lots of people follow this advice.

I even state this approach is what the vast majority of Super funds use. It's just that you typically get the opaque investments as well. I don't want those investments.

I’ve been with Australian Super since 2006. Each year i google the Top 10 supers , its always up there.
Non profit, industry super for members.

On any Super, If you put in a few extra $ you get great tax return benefits

I'll tell you 2 things I've done to get really good performance:-

1. No insurance.
2. All index funds and 100% stocks. I think I'm 2/3 international and 1/2 Australian.

Insurance is an individual thing. I don't have any life insurance for instance but you have to look at your individual situation.

Assuming you won't access your Super for many years the rational approach is 100% stocks. I actually think you shouldn't have any Australian stocks. It's a tiny blip on the market. I'm hypocritical here though and I don't see a big issue.

My wife is in the same Super fund as mine and she has underperformed because she went a 70% balanced fund.

unfortunately PSSAP only have cash, income focused, balance and aggressive or something along those lines, can't choose where or how they/you invest

Their investment managers are better than the common man, I’ve had exposure to choose your own investments and they normally fail and/or the fund withdraws the option.
