Tactics to beat manly

Ok footy tragics and so called arm chair critics. What will be sheensy tactics to beat manly. I think the tigers have size all across the park and will not be intimidated by a big forward pack. I cant wait and look forward to your posts

This is a tricky one without knowing the Manly side, which could throw up a few surprises, especially in the halves.

Im sure if they play Hodkinson and Foran that we would be directing plenty of our plays at them, especially off scrums where we can isolate them as defenders.

Last time we played them they killed us with inside balls, who can forget Watmough's game, luckily we scrambled well enough to win.So in defense our markers have to trust the outside defenders and watch for that inside ball.

Ballin holds the real key for the Eagles IMHO. If he is on his game they are a very dangerous prospect.

But I agree with Simon in that I know little of their new combinations. Hoever the old chestnut of Watmough and Glen Stewart being trailed by Brett Stewart through the ruck remains a critical danger for us.

It will be interesting

Score more points than them.
Without their chief playmaker (Orford) from last year, they may struggle to gel. However if B Stewart is playing, we can expect a hatrick.

Good time of year to be facing them. With Orford gone hopefully there's still some teething issues. Other than that, very similar game plan to last season i think. Shut down Watmough and we'll be right in there. Gonna be a tough one though.

Simple.. take out Watmough, take put Stewart. These 2 guys kill us every single time.

Ditto….Smash Watmough...

How is Stewart even eligble to play.......so smash him too.... :sign:

The opening few rounds are always about ball control.

correct

Agree. Despite the lopsided scoreline against Cronulla, the Tigers dropped plenty of ball and will need to address this going into round 1\. Manly's danger lies in their backrow of Whatmough and Stewart. Both have reportedly played well in the trials and Whatmough destroyed the Tigers in the second half at the SFS late last season. Stewart at fullback always scores tries against the Tigers and his last game against us he ran away with a hat trick.

The Tigers will need to aim up defensively around the ruck and watch Ballin. And they'll need to be very careful on the edge of the ruck where Glenn Stewart and Whatmough will lurk.

I reckon the Tigers definitely have a superior attack to Manly but it will come down to holding the ball and keeping control of the ruck.

Manly will try to dominate the forward battle, its up to our boys to put their bodies on the line.

We should be sledging the acussed rapist reminding him about his potential future because he is normally the difference in recent years.

target foran and kick the ball out of play to nullify stewart. i four forwards are on their game thats all we should have to do to get the win

Brett Stewart should've been stood down like every single other NRL player who is going through a court case. Newcastle stood Wicks and Houston down, Sharks with Bird … but no way would Manly let their love child go.

Anyway, back on topic, Stewart is dangerous anywhere across the park. Our kick chase defence needs to move up in a line to contain his impact on vital metres he can gain in the open. Watmough likes to stand in tackles and get a sly offload away so we need to wrap up the ball. Back to basics pretty much for this game.

I disgagree. None of those players should have been stood down until found guily by the courts. I am happy Manly stood up to the political correctness on this point. It would be great if was missing for this game though as he does tend to carve us up.

They are stood down for bringing the clubs name into disrepute NOT because they are being judged guilty by the club. The politcal correctness card manly are playing and people like those on talkin sport is pathetic. When it goes beyond a simple accusation, ofcourse the player should be stood down while they are being investigated.

That said…

As suggested.. controlling the ball. Don't make mistakes in the first 20mins and defend well. If we do this, we'll hopefull control the game and we can go from there. Watmough is probably the one player in their side i genuienly worry about. Stop his go forward and you put a huge dent in Stewarts game.

That distinction is rubbish. If I am falsely arrested, how can I bring a club into disrepute?

He has brought his club into disrepute by bringing his club (and competition for that matter) into the headlines over something negative.

We're not talking about a false arrest here. He has been formaly charged. If it was a false arrest he would have been released from the time he spent in jail and no charges would have been laid.

Had this been the case… it would have been a headline at best and then nothing else.

He has been charged which doesnt mean he is guilty. A formal charge doesnt mean that the arrest was correct, just that (in the police's view) there is sufficient evidence to bring a case. I am not supporting Stewart (Ithink he is a grub) but standing players down pending a court case suggests they are guilty of the conduct complained. I dont agree with that labelling. Players are targets - Benji is often targetted when he goes out. If he defends himself against an attack and then is charged with assault, is he bringing the game into disrepute?
