Tallyn Da Silva #270

Yeah....something has changed from the club, unrelated to playing ability.
Do you really think this kid, who has been all in on doing an apprenticeship under Api, has decided after 21 NRL games off the bench that he is ready now and Api is actually no good?
Seriously?
The kid knows he is good, but is well aware that he has a lot more to learn and has said so in interviews I posted yesterday. He spoke of his excitement and honour to be learning from Api. He even praised Simpkins for teaching him things.
If this guy, who loves the joint and wants nothing more than to become a great player and be a part of re-installing success here now wants out of his contract early, then you have to think more critically.
SOMETHING ELSE HAS HAPPENED.
Hmmm maybe an approach from another club at big $$$$ and 1sts opportunity

I think it comes down to us paying him backup dummy half money and other clubs maybe willing to pay him starter money? also, maybe he sees that Api is not going anywhere nor should he, based on his performance levels. Perhaps he is thinking go and play first grade somewhere, kill it and then come back to the tigers (the team I love) as the prodigal son in 3 years time.

My point here is all the hate and vitriol for him from the fans needs to stop. NRL players have a very small window to set themselves up for life and the reality is he sees an opportunity to back himself in a system that may not have a top 3 dummy half that could potentially play for another 3 years. If the timing is right, he may end up back at the club with us ready for him to take on the dominant 9 role, or perhaps Haywood stays on his trajectory, and we don't even need TDS.

All the pearl clutching re his potential departure is getting out of hand.
If it is simply about cash We've wasted plenty of salary cap in the past and continue to do so. If the club paid him overs, respective to his current role, in order to secure him long term I would not push back on that. Plenty of others areas to trim the fat to make up for it.
I suspect it is about more than salary but simply speculating.

From the options I've seen presented, he's going to be sharing the duties with another 9 anyway.

I think this is as much a decision based on culture than the ability of TDS himself. If the club puts an unproven kid over a proven gun who has sacrificed for this club, what does that say about us?

If we dont make that kind of statement, we're going to have more Galvin type situations. It's actually the problem that Bateman highlighted. We're creating little monsters by putting these kids on a pedestal.
By 2027 he would have played 4 years of NRL, with possibly 50 games under his belt and 5 presesons of preparation.
We arent talking about a Galvin, Lauli'i or Matamua etc..who were put up far too early. This bloke has come through the pathways correctly, stopping off to play at each level and biding his time. Will he be fully ready by 2027? Maybe not, but I have no doubt he will be by 28 and by then we'd have a 23 year old with close to 70 NRL games, who has been in the senior system since preseason 23 and who is ready to rip and tear for the next dozen years.
Nah...lets let him walk.

This isnt the same as Galvin. Even Tallyns manager has said so.
Something else is at play.
Why havent we used this bloke over the past month? He played in the round 10 massacre in Melbourne and then nothing more in top grade.
  1. rd11 - v Souths, Api played the full 80 and played well scoring twice and breaking the line 3 times. However we had a prime opportunity to win that game with Duncan in the bin for 10 of the last 12 minutes and couldnt get it done, giving up a late try. Api made 58 tackles in that game with another 5 missed. Tallyn played 69 minutes in KOE and did well in a winning team. You could say both bounced back well after being poor v Melbourne.
  2. rd12 - bye
  3. rd13 - v Cowboys, Api played the full 80 and did some good things, however he had a heavy defensive involvement again with 41 tackles made and 6 missed as well as some frustrating errors and penalties. we had a good fight back after a disasterous first 40 but fell 1 try short. Tallyn had a blinder in KOE playing the 80 and racking up excellent numbers in a good win over Newtown.
  4. rd14 - v Penrith, Api played the full 80 and did some good things but ran out of juice as he was forced to make 58 tackles with 9 more missed. We came at them hard at the end and had 11 minutes to score the winning try but couldnt get it done. Tallyn played 71 minutes in KOE and his second stint was the final 15 minutes where we roared home to score 14 points and draw level with the Dogs.
  5. rd15 - bye. Tallyn played another great game of 63 minutes in KOE doing some good things in a strong win over Manly.
  6. rd16 - v Raiders, Api played the full 80 and did didnt do much as he ran out of juice making 48 tackles with 4 more missed. This was his worst game of the 4 and he needed a spell. we fell one try short of a win again. This time Tallyn was on the NRL bench and wasnt used. He also wasnt used in KOE and they were flogged.
So lets look at the past 6 weeks...
Api played 4 games of full 80 minute efforts, averaging over 57 tackles attempted and 81 meters run.
All 4 games could have been won at the end but we fell short and lost them all.
Tallyn played 4 games in KOE for 3 wins and a draw. The game he didnt play where he was wasted on the bench in the NRL, they got flogged. It should also be noted that the KOE team had just completed 4 losses on the trot, including 2 proper hidings before he went back down to play for them.

It is clear that the kid is having a go. It is clear he wants to succeed. It is also clear that the decision to not use him in tandom with Api has very likely cost us wins in the NRL over this period. There is a path to first grade for Tallyn where he will be the primary no.9 and the club has moved away from it.
Until they tell us why, speculation will only increase.
Yep can't disagree Tucker something has shifted and it's beyond disappointing as a WTs fan. It just always feels like one step forward two back.

he doesn’t want too that’s the whole point
he’s over doing the apprenticeship now. my guess is the club promised him the 9 jersey when Api’s current contract was up, and api’s decided he’s not ready to retire.

Bull shit

There could be some truth to this one. If so, it should be easily managed by competent management.
sheens made empty promises to the Harold Matt’s kids that aren’t being fulfilled hence why they are all leaving , all got top 30 deals way too young and were promised jerseys they didn’t work for , at least tallyn in some way had worked for his just unfortunate we might lose him , he genuinely loved the club

Im dissappointed as well because for the longest time I resisted the urge to believe the overhype on our juniors. People were watching them and then coming on here to say we have the likes of a Johns, Fittler, Lazarus and Farah coming through. Then theyd hit first grade and fizzle out.
The latest crop had been talked up to the moon and back as well. I remember working in Canberra and deciding to watch the SG Ball one Saturday as the talk was so big. Maggies side had Mason, Galvin, Saukuru, Miller, Faagatu, Kit Lauli'i and Da Silva in it. I ended up watching the Raiders tear them to pieces. We were terrible, bar the hooker who was clearly the best player on the field for either side. He was doing whatever he wanted, was leading them well and had time.
Over the next 2 years I grew to appreciate the talents of Galvin and Mason as well. Even think Kit has something to offer. Now we are sitting here with Galvin gone, Tallyn about to join him, Mason is fast becoming a fan villian and Kit is yet to get a real opportunity.
Its back to the future.
