Tedesco vows to live up to hype at Raiders

Canberra Raiders recruit James Tedesco has vowed to live up to the pressure to perform as a marquee player when he joins the club next year.

T**he Wests Tigers fullback also revealed his belief that Ricky Stuart can develop him into a consistent representative player was a factor in the biggest decision of his career.**
Sidelined with an ankle injury, the 21-year-old is relishing the challenge of replacing Brisbane-bound Anthony Milford in Canberra's No.1 jersey. He knows a reported three-year contract worth $1.9 million brings certain expectations.

"Coming down there as a marquee player and someone Ricky expects a lot of, it's definitely going to be a lot of pressure to perform week to week,'' he said.

"Sometimes players might get a bit complacent when they make a change, but you don't have to worry about that if you're training hard and doing all the right things. I love watching Milford, he's a freak. They're big shoes to fill, but we play similar attacking footy and hopefully I can live up to his standards.''

Tedesco was convinced the Raiders were the right fit when he met with coach Stuart in Canberra on Thursday.

Robbie Farah has a high opinion of Stuart having played under him for NSW, and the Tigers skipper may have inadvertently played a role in Tedesco's move.

"Even Robbie Farah, he thinks he's a great coach and **I feel I can learn a bit off him,''** Tedesco said. "I really want to play rep footy consistently and the next few years I think he can help me there.''

A City Origin representative last year, Tedesco became emotional when he told his Tigers teammates after training on Tuesday he had decided to leave at the end of the season.

"It was a bit stressful and a weight on my shoulders thinking about it all,'' he said. "Obviously fans are going to be disappointed when you leave, and I got a few angry posts or tweets. But I tried not to read them and knew my friends and family would support me, no matter what.''
Ending his partnership with star rookie Tigers halfback Luke Brooks was particularly tough. But he is confident he and Raiders youngster Mitch Cornish can be just as lethal. Cornish and Tedesco would have played for NSW under-20s together last year had it not been for Tedesco's City call-up.

"It obviously hard leaving 'Brooksy', [but] I'm sure it won't take long to strike up a good combination with Mitch,'' he said. "[Raiders centre] Jack Wighton and I played Aussie Schoolboys together, and I played with [Raiders prop] Paul Vaughan for Italy at the World Cup.
"'Vaughany' and I spoke a fair bit, we were pretty close on that tour. I know a few of the boys down there in Canberra and they really enjoy it. I live on a property at Menangle and Canberra has that country vibe.

"I'm focussed on the Tigers for now.''
Tedesco, who has played just 25 NRL games, made his NRL debut in round one, 2012, but didn't play again that season after suffering a serious knee injury. He has played only five games this year and is sidelined with an ankle complaint, but he insists his body will hold up at Canberra.

"Some people say I'm injury-prone but it's hard to help, it's a physical contact game and injuries happen,'' he said.

"The ankle got caught in an awkward situation, you can't help that.''
Tedesco is looking forward to being part of a young Raiders back line featuring Wighton, Cornish, Edrick Lee and Jarrod Croker.

Penrith's Josh Mansour may join them, and Canberra expected an answer from the winger in coming days.
"It's definitely exciting, I watched their game [4the 2-12 win over North Queensland] and it showed how good they can be,'' Mansour said. "Especially watching Jack [Wighton], he's getting better every week and it's exciting to play with guys like that.''

I didn't realise Ricky was a fullback?, he will certainly be helping develop his game alright….....Those comments from the Traitor are a snide swipe at Potter...I recall only last year how Tede$co was praising Potter for helping him in his game....what a change of tune!!.

Poor form this sort of media for a future club when a player's still halfway through the season. After the grand final - say what you like.

Teddy should stay away from the media, the more he talks the more he's alienating the tigers support base. You still have a season to finish at tiger town, and your lapping up praise to the enemy. Show some respect boy! We don't deserve to be treated like dirt.

A great 10th post…very well said...its like he's rubbing salt into the wound with comments like that...and they are his quotes!

I would like to think the media in this case has constructed this piece of fluff from various un related interviews Teddy has given.

If in fact teddy was knowingly part of this Raiders promotional piece of fluff he needs to be stood down ASAP. What a slap in the face to Potter. Every time he opens his gob and digs a deeper hole

Kinda poor form to be talking about that whilst still playing for us, these mid season signings should stop.

I think it's great. I hope he shoots his mouth off some more. We get to see his character.

Surely by now Potter has grounds to keep him in NSW cup and not make it look like sour grapes.

Potter is very professional. Re handling Benji well. However this one would cut deeper. Potters faith in Teddy is a huge part of why Teddy got the big money. We were all calling for Teddy's head mid last year. Potter stuck solid. So what does Teddy come out and say, Potter isn't the coach to get me to play rep footy consistently.

Wow. Disappointing. Potter deserves better

He should be stood down because he is a disgrace to our club and to himself and to his family and friends.

Just a low class individual. I'm glad he's gone.

Ive been supportive of him till now. Potter has had nothing but praise for the kid in all the interviews and I think his comment about Ricky being better for his game is disgusting.

Especially since potter has helped him command top dollar and already had selectors earmark him for rep duties!!

The one thing I remember about Ricky is him getting rid of Kimorley from the sharks only to drag sharks to the bottom and kimorley took the dogs to a premiership. The only good things he has done was jump on the roosters bandwagon to a gf years ago and slap a ref.

Ricky is a myth. Potter keeps it simple, but that's smart. From the Bennett ilk. It's sad reflection on tedesccos intelligence that he didn't think that a multiple dally m award winning fullback couldn't teach him more.

But I honestly think he is coming up with excuses when it purely was money.

Get over it, the kid has taken the dollars, good luck to him. We couldn't match it for a number of reasons and he believe he's looking after his future.

He may second guess once he realises that Brooksy made him look good and Ricky is a hack

Ricky is a myth.

Stuart has never left a team in a better position than when he first took it on, I'm also not aware of any player that has improved significanty under Stuart's tutelage.

Even managed to lose with the best australian team in history…. When sheens hasnt had a problem winning.

Mayer made the right call not giving big dollars to this bloke.

His character is revealed more and more each day. Some of those quotes are entirely disrespectful given he doesn't yet play for Canberra or his great mate Ricky yet.

The guy seems to have no humility at all. Im delighted he has gone given some of his quotes since he made up his mind. Talking about playing golf with Beni and Braith, sure they were thrilled he dobbed them in. Now this babble about how good Ricky is and how he can take him to the next level.

I was happy to play him whenhe decided to leave. However now i would be comfortable with Potter demoting him.

I vomited a little in my mouth.

I'm starting to wonder if Tedesco realises he is going to the Raiders 2015, not the Roosters 2002.

Does Tede$co realise that he won't get a look in to the rep teams when his new team is running last or thereabouts… Rugby league is a team sport
Tede$co... Team goes poorly so do u as a rep player

kind of like how no one considered aaron woods or robbie farah for SOO last year.

or how people have dismissed Milford for making origin this year. an outside chance for sure, but could still sneak in despite playing for a team that gave up 108 pts in 2 weeks
