OFFICIAL Terrell May #296

Would like it if he got some speed / agility training in the off season . Came back with less of bouncing about in a pinball machine in 26. He's got the size ,

He generally only runs the ball at half pace and I assume that is to pace himself to try and get through playing close to 80mins each game.
Earlier in the season he was carrying the ball with more venom and his hits ups looked to be somewhere around three quarter pace which is acceptable and created impact including one clean line break that I recall.
So it’s definately an attitude thing, he can choose tj carry the ball at half pace and have very minimal impact, or carry the ball at three quarter to full pace and have a much bigger impact.
I understand that hardly any props carry the ball kamikaze style at full pace these days aside from kickoff returns, as it greatly increases the chances of injury and dropped balls, so somewhere around three quarter pace is acceptable, but we really don’t want to see the half paced crap.

If we can find two props (that's a big if not many available) move him to lock, after watching his games this season that's where it looks like he's more suited to play.

Props are supposed to give you impact through the middle of the park then interchanged so the next one gives it all he's got, they are not meant to stay on for the majority of the game, intensity has to drop he's good but not superhuman.

Even the benchmark Payne Haas has been taking breaks lately madge has seen that he has more impact over less minutes.

So, if Terrell wants to play prop, he needs to bite the bullet and drop his minutes.

Aside From playing time, what do you see in May that suggests he is better suited to lock?

His willingness to offload, how many times do you see him meet the defense and turn looking for someone to pass to, he does that a lot, sometimes I wish he would just run hard more with mongrel, then he'd be more of the prop that's missing from our pack.

That said he's still a great addition to our team for years to come we are all hoping.

I don't see Terell as a 13, his passes are not very crisp and he also does not have a great step to get outside a defender. I think his most impact will be limiting his minutes to maybe 25 - 30 per half and focussing on hitting the line with some venom and offloading the ball when the opportunity is there.

I suggested the move throughout the year, but only if we replaced replace him with a top tier front rower.

He has the workrate similar to the Paul Gallen type #13 role and has similar the ball playing ability... He can play issah yeo pivot role..

Terrell himself also appears to love being a bit of a ball player; Benji likes players playing to their strengths and not coaching their natural ability out of them..

So the move ticks a few boxes..

The problem now is that Douhei has surprised us at #7... It now means that the #13 role is likely where we get Latu into the game (likely off the bench, interchanging with Sione).. so if we moved Terrell there, we take Latu out of play..

Its a tough one... Benji has a few big positional decisions to make going into next season.

He's a good footballer, there's no reason he couldn't run all offseason at lock and pick up the finer points of the position and show he's capable if indeed that's where he wants to play.

Anyhow, Benji has to be convinced he has it in him and moving him there suits the team dynamic.
But if prop's his position from what we've seen he needs to reduce minutes for more impact for the old saying ringing in our ears, team first.

Fair enough, he is a decent offloader which is a different style to most locks but I also think the team is better suited to him running hard and offloading after winning contact if the opportunity presents itself. I think his recent approach of meeting contact half hearted, turning and looking to offload doesn't actually take those defenders out of play.
I personally think the most important attacking role of a lock is selective passing to other forwards before the line, combined with leg drive through the line when holding the ball is the better option. This skill results in all your forwards more frequently meeting defenders one on one. It is a skill I haven't seen in May. Perhaps he could learn it after an off season spent there but Im doubtful.
He has undoubtedly been a great addition to the team but I see front row as his only position.

Id say he has similar ball playing abilities to Gallen but that is suited to a different era. He potentially could play a 13 role with an appropriately structured game plan but he definitely could not play in the same fashion as Yeo. Even if though yes, he is closer to Yeo than Twal is.

It’s not that difficult to make what you’re suggesting work.
start him at 13 and interchange Latu in for a low minute high impact prop, if we don’t sign another 1, that would be Hunt or Sione or even Pole if he prefers a shorter intense game. Terrell moves to the front row to play a bit of a tighthead role and Latu has the freedom to play as first reciever.
Doueihi takes the right flank with his kicking game handy and straight running on an edge, Luai plays wide on the left, straight and with footwork through the line.
In this example the lock we are all wanting and looking for for next year is a combination of Latu for 50-60 mins and Terrell for 20/10 mins at the start and finish of each game.

Thing is with Terrell. He has spent his past 3 years since grade playing with chip on his shoulder. Each year he stood out as a new comer. He brought impact to the Roosters in 2023, versatility and longevity in 24 and an alpha presence and determination to just continue to do the work for us in 25
He is still raw and lacks coaching of the finer skills. Being a front rower isn’t just about carting the ball up into the defence.
Terrell needs the team around him to make him more effective.
he has an ability to offload in the line, before the line and through the line.
He has an ability to pass wide in a shift or short to an adjacent forward.
He has footwork but tends to turn and drop his shoulder as he hits the line and continue pushing forward but seems to lack any power leg drive.
If Terrell has options even side when he takes a hit up he could do any of the above.
Both skills benefit a prop and or lock but it’s a question of what benefits us the most.
With Terrell at Prop he would be first or second runner and ahead of the pack not playing after it. If he can fine tune his subtleties that put him into that elite prop class then we the Tigers would benefit with him at prop the most.

Big Terrell is playing too many minutes wearing down as the season progresses and pacing himself in games. We need another enforcer and Pole has to rise to early season form all season.

He starred as an impact forward for the Roosters. They had JWH, Collins, Whyte in the rotation.
