If he is in the cooling of period, id be coming back at him with an increased offer. We can't sign anyone, need to break the bank on someone. We signed Packer for around 700k, what's 900k for TPJ then.

It would be a total waste of money and a huge lurch in the wrong direction. It is the sort of poor decision the club has made in the past.Hopefully those knee jerk decisions are behind us and stay behind us

My guess is TPJ has chosen the Bulldogs because they are prepared to pay more

That is the correct answer and when their policy fails again next year they will be in an even deeper hole at the end of 2022 with more years of pain ahead of them.

Or if it pays off, they will be laughing their back into the top 8. Every club has a strategy and its clear what's dogs is. Ours seems like a abit harder to read, other than refusing to pay overs anymore. One day we are going to have to bite the bullet and have fork out some doe or else our only hope is Junior talent which has its risks also.

I don't think we have to change strategy. I also think our recruitment strategy has been pretty good. I also don't think missing out on marquee players at TPJ's level is going to hurt us.

I think the signing that hurt us the most missing out on was Latrell. He is a weapon. That is what we need. We need a top marquee player or we have to play money ball.

The issue with moneyball is it's never actually won anything. The A's have been doing it for 20 years and they've not won the world series, even though they've outperformed relative to their roster spend. It's a good way to bridge some of the gap in a comp without a salary cap, but a sabermetric approach in a defined salary cap comp like the NRL has its limitations imo.

I think it's our only option. You may have to pay marquee dollars every so often to retain or attract talent but the opposite approach will always fail. You get players like Reynolds, Packer and Mbye and they kill your club.

If you waste your marquee dollars as we have you basically lower your chances of success significantly until you can unwind those contracts.

I like the Dogs signings for instance. They could come good. The problem is if some of those top dollar signings don't perform they will be in big trouble.

You are correct, but at this stage we'll be in trouble no matter what. I have no issues paying overs for certain players, we're in a position where we have to. It has to be the right players though. Paying overs for someone like Brandon Smith would be an absolute no brainer. Strengthens a position on the field and adds so much off it.

I have no issue with targeting the best youngsters, but there needs to be other good signings to complement them. They can't do it on their own.

I think we agree. It's just getting that signing. I think TPJ could have been good for us. He isn't a sure thing but we need more attack on our edges. I think AD was moved solely because our attack on the edges was terrible and not because AD wasn't performing at 6. So our edges are a big problem.

I also like the idea of signing Brandon Smith. It's a key position where we have some good young players who haven't shown they are quality first graders. Smith to me is also a marquee player. I think we've gotten no chance but I'd like to think the only marquee players we get are guys like Smith or Latrell. JAC would have been good as well but I don't see him as huge loss.

I think you gotta keep getting signings like Stef, Laurie, AD etc and then look to jag a special player if possible.

A tip for the club would be STOP TALKING PUBLICLY ABOUT SIGNING PLAYERS

Makes the club look like idiots if it doesn't work. Don't understand why Lee has to blab his mouth constantly

He probably thinks he’s being cutting edge or something, with all of the transparency.

I agree it’s pretty silly - as you said if a signing doesn’t work out it can be kind of embarrassing, and I can’t remember the last time a club openly admitted to pursuing a player, discussed some of the details around it, and it worked out and they signed.

My god :face_palm: Could we be anymore more of a joke? Just like with JAC, we had him. Then we did something stupid that cost us a potential game breaking player.

Now instead of having JAC and TPJ for 2022, we have Nofa, Talau and Luke Garner. Well done, management. And people on here are trusting them with rebuilding the club?? These are the same people who will be negotiating extensions for Blore, Stefano, Laurie so take a second to think about that.

Listen it takes a lot of skill to offer David Nofoaluma a 4 year deal

I agree with your "moneyball" summation and its limitations, though do believe that it is still the best strategy for us at the moment.

We as fans, as a club, need to be more honest about about where we are as a capable/ professional team. Crap analogy, but a poorly made cake doesnt become a good cake because of a cherry on top. Moneyball would have us with competent depth across the park. We dont have competent starters. I would say we have moneyballed props pretty well, but 2nd row out, we are skinny EVERYWHERE!

If we stop putting the horse before the cart, and build a squad that doesnt look like it needs to be carried by a star signing, we will likely be able to sign better calibre players who feel they can accentuate the team, not bear the weight of it.

Rubbish. no1 will signed here, you need to pay overs for the first domino to fall.

So true, we low-ball offers like we are in a privileged position ... drum roll ... wrong

I would love us to do follow up interviews with missed recruits and player managers to find out where we went wrong .....

Hopefully Lee pulls his head in and keeps his opinions to himself from now on

But he didn’t say that? I haven’t heard those words mentioned once.

It was the media report that stated that was mentioned after negotiations about final salary broke down.

A miss like this only hurts coz its played out in the media. Are we 'Hurting' about missing out on Su'a?

The only lesson I want the club to take away from this is - stick to your guns Re: Valuations and more importantly, tell Lee to keep his mouth shut.

Agree 100%..

Lee’s problem is not so much that he says things.. you need too as a Chairman and leader of an organisation.. it’s that he often speaks in terms of a fan in the media..not a leader.. no more evident in the re-signing of Nofoaluma..

Go back to cliche responses in terms of recruitment.. leave emotion out of it and be professional.. let the recruitment team do their jobs..

I haven't knocked the guy previously but it feels like he sees the fans as little 14 yo's desperate to tell their friends about our special new Pokemon card. I think it's great he is putting his money and effort into the club but I think he engages with the media on their terms and it's stupid.

I don't care about missing out of these high dollar signings anyway. I think they go wrong all the time for us.

How much would you pay for TPJ - bearing in mind this a bloke who is not a proven match winner?

Yeah, the last thing you want is to publicly put someone down.

Oh well, onto the next possibility and hopefully our officials bite their lips more when commenting in the future.

we will need to sign overs at some point to get that marquee Signing
make it Cheese or Munster

There are very, very few that I would pay overs for, but these are two. Definitely marquee and would tick all the boxes.
TPJ, not fussed tbh. Would have been a good signing a the right price but a bad signing at overs - which would have been the next step.
