A week after the Wests Tigers declared they were out of the hunt for Tevita Pangai jnr, the joint venture phoned his management on Thursday to reopen discussions as the Bulldogs close in on securing his services.

In a stunning backflip, which comes a day after Tigers chairman Lee Hagipantelis was quoted on SEN Radio saying the club "decided to move in a different direction", the Tigers have had a sudden change of heart.

It comes as the Dragons and Bulldogs discuss a potential swap deal that could see Matt Dufty depart St George Illawarra in return for Will Hopoate as early as this year.

As for Pangai jnr, the Bulldogs have tabled a three-year deal worth close to $2.1 million. It remains unclear how much Brisbane are willing to chip in for the remainder of this year and next year.

However, the Tigers now want a seat back at the table as the Broncos forward looks set to depart Red Hill before the August 1 trade deadline. A verbal offer from the Tigers just over a week ago was worth about $1.8 million over three years and will need to increase significantly to secure his services.

The Tigers are willing to take him this year, however Canterbury's preference is to not spend the money in 2021 and wait for next year.

Tigers officials last week backgrounded journalists to ensure the public knew they had decided to pull the pin on the chase for Pangai jnr, citing character concerns as one of the reasons despite verbally offering him a $1.8 million deal over three years.

Tigers coach Michael Maguire is desperate to land a big-name signing for 2022 as pressure mounts over his future at the club.

The Herald reported on Wednesday that multiple Tigers sources confirmed there was a growing discontent towards Maguire over comments he made in the press conference after the loss to South Sydney last Sunday.

Speaking after the same game, South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett blamed “toxic” cultures for the number of lopsided scorelines this season, an observation that has been the subject of text messages between some Tigers players in the aftermath of the 38-22 defeat.

The Bulldogs are also willing to throw Dufty a lifeline, opening negotiations with the out-of-favour 25-year-old for next season. There are also discussions about a swap deal with Hopoate for this season.

The Dogs are reluctant to release Hopoate without something in return, especially considering the departure of Dallin Watene-Zelezniak to the Warriors and the season-ending injury to Nick Cotric.

Dufty has been struggling to land a contract with an NRL club after the Raiders withdrew their interest, however the Bulldogs are considering offering him a lifeline to join the likes of Matt Burton, Josh Addo-Carr and Brent Naden at Belmore next year.

Agree... Why bring up that the club leaked info... Like no other club does.. Clown

Was the original report he did or didn't want to go to bulldogs?

I thought they said he preferred us over dogs but money talks. If we offer 2mil over 3 years you would have to think Broncos would have some sort of contribution to make it a value buy.

Hopefully they don't get desperate and pay a silly amount for him

I don't think they will.. They might increase from the 3 years 1.8 to 1.95 but you would think Broncos would be putting in something next year.. If we could get him for 650k a season I say LETS GETS THIS DONE..

The dogs can look forward to the most judiciary appearances in 2022. TPJ and Hetherington alone make up a season of suspensions...

They can also look forward to a significantly improved roster though. If you were a Dogs fan you’d be looking forward to next year. Us not so much.

Bulldogs are so bad they can only look forward. Tigers have the same # wins in 2021 as Bulldogs have in 2020 and 2021 combined.

To be fair at present we’re not THAT much better. As it stands now would our team for 2022 beat theirs? I’m not so sure.

What are you talking about, we have 5 wins they have 2 wins. That is substantially better. Enormously better. But that's not to say Tigers are good, just to say how bad Bulldogs are. You are kidding yourself if you think there is any equivalence.

Bulldogs have beaten Sharks and Dragons. They are 0/5 against Bottom 8 sides. They have the worst attack in the comp, not just by a small margin either: they are 86 points behind the second-worst attack (Broncos).

Bulldogs defence is 10 points better than Tigers (Bulldogs 3rd worst in comp) and therefore their differential is worst in the comp (and 52 points behind second-worst Broncos).

Bulldogs have been shut-out 4 times in 15 games (over a quarter of all matches) and they have only scored more than 20 points in a match once.

Bulldogs are last in the comp for - line engaged, line breaks, tackle breaks, all runs, all-run metres, kick return metres, try assists, line break assists,

Bulldogs are second-last in the comp for - post-contact metres, offloads,

Worse still, Bulldogs make least errors (and therefore best completion rate) in the comp.

Tigers are better placed than Bulldogs in all categories measured by the NRL except errors/completions and penalties conceded.

Why are you getting so worked up? It's just an opinion. I agree we're better that the Dogs,

I don’t think we’re better than the Dogs. I don’t think we’re better than anyone but hope I’m wrong over the coming weeks

If this guy is legit back in our sights I would go all out for a Pangai , Woods , Tapine
Woods $ 250 k. Go forward & Defence
Tapine $ 600 k Tuff go forward player
Pangai $ 750 k breaks the line and hits hard
We currently don’t have this
I know folks will say Woods is past history but he is still better than any one we have playing up front , I don’t care about the past we are struggling to go forward this lot would absolutely help out , then add Hastings and the pomy Centre and we are a changed team , we can’t worry about yesterday it’s tomorrow We head for a semi spot

Great idea.

To be fair to Chammas, he's normally been pretty balanced with his reporting of the Tigers.

One of the better ones out of an ordinary bunch. Might just be a closet fan having a vent.

slowly but surely turned the roster over to be far more superior (on paper) to what we had in 2019 with some talent that will bear fruit in the next two years.

This statement resonates with me the most.
Madge arrived in 2019 with the same roster Ivan assembled which most would agree was an experienced / aging roster so a limited premiership window.
The year before our key playmaker is rated officially as halfback of the year. Whether you agree or not it still happened. That season with that in mind, the team still achieves 9th. There was limited growth in any of the side and a very United committed culture but they still couldn’t get it done.
Next year Madge’s first in charge. He gets the same Roster to 9th again. Brooks form didn’t drop, statistically he had a better year and was voted as the best player in the club. Matterson was a valuable pick up and grew with us and in my opinion has not had anywhere near the same impact in a better side at Parramatta.
So alas the writing was on the wall 9th twice with two different coaches and 2 spine players in their best form out of many previous seasons (Marshall and Farah) and the other consistently in good form (Brooks).
This is why we have started another rebuild, the window was closing and the team was far from a premiership contender.
It’s short term pain for much longer term gain.

Yeah but as usual and an attempt to win fans over brought Marshall and Farah back ....both in real terms were epic failures as it pushed us to where we are now ..... instead of pushing towards the future we were stuck in the past ...someone like Gamble wasn't really given an opportunity ..and now in an even worse side looks to have a bit of promise

So now we are stuck with Hastings a player going backwards leading a side to their worst season in how many years in a League that is a step down from ours ......

Didn’t we get rid of Marshall so that we could play douhie at 6? And yet we are playing mbye there. I think there’s little doubt if douhie isn’t the long term 6 then we would be better with Marshall still at 6 and douhie in centres.

Burst into laughter thinking about the pain of that pair defending next to each other.

Woods is an interesting one. He's fast approaching the last chance saloon in terms of earning reasonably decent money and would, I think, work hard if given another chance at his old club. He also has a lot of first grade and representative experience and shouldn't cost all that much.
