I think its also worth pointing out how respectful the English have been towards Clarke since his announcement. I have my doubts whether we would have been the same if Cook was the one who retired after being humiliated the way Clarke was. I'm sure there would have been a lot of chest beating if was the other way around.

Another interesting stat that has never really been mentioned. Clarke has lost 4 Ashes series in England, 2 as captain.

spot on mate :righton:

Watching these 4 Muppets (Nicholas Healy Taylor n Warnie) pretending to be selectors is painful to watch…

Aus 0/82 at lunch after being sent into bat by the Poms....Warner 53n.o. Rogers 27n.o. if anyone cares...

Yeah there all experts in hindsight .

Nice Century from the Captain elect….hopefully the tag wags a bit so we can push up to around 450 in the 1st dig...

7/388 Smith 114n.o Starc 7n.o...just after lunch...

We've always known that both sides have a brittle batting order and this test just proves it. The aussies went to England with a game plan using Johnson to batter them.

In the first test the poms showed their mentality when it showed 4 groundsmen on their knees trimming the pitch with a brush and scissors each. Aussie batsmen never turned up.

The next test was another sub-continent wicket but our flat track bullies got their act together and the pommie batsmen fell apart.

The next two tests, the poms had typical English pitches in typical English conditions and our batters couldn't handle it. They had no idea how to play a ball that moves in the air AND off the pitch. Too many one day and T20 matches.

This test really opened my eyes when I saw our two openers on day one, play to these English conditions and were 0-19 after the first hour. Unheard of. The other batsmen reaped the reward of this opening stand.

Now after day 2, we see the real England again. In a complete mess. All too late of course but it just shows why we are the one day world champions and not the best in the test arena - yet.

Buck Rogers explained it well when he said that he learnt a long time ago to change styles depending on batting conditions. The young blokes need to learn this fast - but how? When they play less shield cricket and more bash cricket.

Agreed. However there is no money / crowd's in shield cricket. Don't really blame them for chasing the coin. More money, more exposure and better opportunities in the shorter forms of the games. Its the Gen Z curse of having short attention spans and catering to younger kids to get them interested in the game before they can mature to watching the longer form.

I don't know what the answer is, but whilst the likes of the IPL and Big Bash are around, there is no way we convert sponsors and players to anything else…

Its that old saying to little to late. Only consolation for me is that Pup gets to retire win a win (even though its an Ashes loss). Probably would have preferred a few more runs, but can't win 'em all. Suppose he gets to spend more time with his wife now… certainly know I would like to.... his wife that is.

england were certainly better but god this was a wierd series
aus won its games by 405 runs (almost an innings) and another by an innings
england smashed aus in each of its victories

all one sided games- aus didn't play that well but the criticism they got was so over the top.

Over the top? They got rolled in the first innings of a test match before lunch for one of the lowest totals in history. Don't let a dead rubber victory make you believe everything is rosey again. Well, it will be come summer when they play like invincible in their own conditions. Until they go to the Sub-Continent and get swept by India. This side has massive issues playing away from home. They couldn't even beat Pakistan and could easily cop a bit of stick from Bangladesh.

IMO the worst thing that could have happened did, and that was finish the dead rubber with a strong showing. It will now gloss over the glaring deficiencies and there are still many questions to be answered:

- Is Shaun Marsh the man to take over from either Clarke or Rogers? I personally don't think so.
- Is Watson actually finished or is this going to be used as a vindication that we need him in the side?
- Do we persist with Mitch Marsh or will he be rissoled for someone else? I think he's to be given more time as he's only young and has proven he is useful with both bat and ball. Only person I'd dare replace him with is Faulkner.
- Do we persist with an ageing Voges, who seemed to have only done something when the series was dead and gone. May as well bring in the future #5 now.
- Will Siddle be recalled after one good showing, where does Hazelwood fit in now?
- Does Nevill get shafted for Haddin to return? I would hope not, but see comment RE: Watson.

Like the Weststigers the Australian cricket team can only play one style, if they are forced to grind, than they are shot and most of the players are hot one day and cold the next. On paper they should dominate all over the world but I get the feeling their mentally weak.

Anyway the new era has started and will be interesting how Steve Smith handles the job, just hope it doesn't effect his batting

it was 2 massive victories.. we beat them in 2 games by as much and more they beat us in 3.

They still lost the series. They're a one dimensional side.

australian teams have always played this way.. tough and agressive.

difference is this team doesn't have the smarts to pull it off
