HOLD onto your hats ladies and gentlemen, because we’re just getting started. Thursday delivered the triple bombshell of Canterbury landing Test stars Aaron Woods and Kieran Foran from the Wests Tigers and Warriors respectively, while the Sydney Roosters pocketed gun fullback James Tedesco.
But if you thought that was the end of things, you’re way off the mark: if anything it was the stick of dynamite chucked into a barrel of petrol. Why? Well, for starters the Tigers aren’t going to sit around clutching photos of their turncoat trio. They’ve got $3 million burning a hole in the back pocket and a shortlist of stars to choose from.
With gaps at fullback, five-eighth and the front row, at the top of their list is St George Illawarra star Josh Dugan and Warriors prop Ben Matulino, who they are closing in on, while Gareth Widdop slipped away when he re-signed long-term with the Dragons. Josh Reynolds is the other big-name No.6 they could attempt to pair with re-signed halfback Luke Brooks, or … Benji Marshall. Then there’s the giant shadow Cooper Cronk is casting over every off-contract playmaker.
Cronk is coming to Sydney and, assuming he wants to play on, there’s still half a dozen clubs vying for his services — although the previous short-priced favourites Canterbury have removed themselves from the race by going all-in on Foran. The Tigers should certainly be putting a call in to Cronk’s people to see if he could be tempted to have a slice of the Tedesco-Woods-Moses money. Shaun Johnson may also have been another option, especially given his relationship with Ivan Cleary, but the gun No.7 is believed to be close to re-signing with the Warriors.
And there are many dominoes still to fall across the remaining 16 NRL teams.
