The cups

Looks like MJ might sit off the pace a bit. If Piero can get across and sprint like he did last time at the Valley he's still a big chance.

I like All Too Hard's chances in this race even more than the Guineas. There are more horses capable of dragging him into the race this time. Ethiopia in particular. I wouldn't be surprised if they go 1-2 at big odds.

I cant get excited about Pierro at this distance… The top weighted horses cant let this end up as a sprint, so I'm expecting an up-tempo race.

Depending on the final track condition, I'm thinking Green Moon, Shoot Out & More Joyous... I'll probably take my lesson from the Caulfield Cup and go with best horse in the race!

I think the Cox Plate is the best race in this country... Counting Down to Saturday!!!

Anyone see the geelong cup today? 7 horse field and maluckyday didnt run in the first 4\. Was it a.bad run?

Just never got into the race. The first 4 sprinted around the corner and Malcuckyday was too far off. He finished the race off well though so from a Melb Cup perspective it wasn't a bad run. The first 4 certainly weren't dour or plodders - they all looked like good racehorses. The French horse peaked on his run a bit but he may be fitter later on. Not sure if he needed the win or a penalty to make the cup. Winner looked pretty good.

Maluckyday left the barriers awkwardly & settled at the rear with Gatewood racing just behind the leader in second place. It turned out to be a sit & sprint race after a moderate run race & leaving the back marker's no chance of winning. Bit disappointing with it not being a genuine staying test for the MC but with a small field, that happens sometimes.

The death of the jockey two years ago stunned the racing world, writes Chris Roots.
The last time Shoot Out was in a Cox Plate will not be forgotten by his owner Linda Huddy.
The diminutive Mount Isa woman remembers the call two years ago about the death of Shoot Out's regular jockey Stathi Katsidis on the morning of the barrier draw.
His death, from a drug and alcohol overdose, shocked the racing world.
''You just felt so sorry for his family,'' Huddy said yesterday. ''You didn't know what to say.
''It was something you try not to think about - it was just sad.''
The next week was spent finding a new jockey, Corey Brown, before he ran fourth behind So You Think in the Cox Plate of 2010.
Shoot Out returns to Moonee Valley on Saturday for another crack at the weight-for-age championship.
''You try not to look back, I prefer to look forward,'' Huddy said. ''That was two years ago, it was a long time ago. It is definitely a bit different this time, but we are an outsider.
''He is that little bit older, not saying older horses can't win but it is a consideration. But I also don't think there is a So You Think, Zipping or Whobegotyou in this field, and they were the ones that beat him home. Except, maybe, Pierro.''
Shoot Out has taken them to the heights of Australian racing, winning the 2010 Australian Derby, and they have extended their interests since.
They took a share in the Lucas Cranach, which was third in the Melbourne Cup last year, and will be back at Flemington on the first Tuesday next month after Gatewood, in which they also own a share, won the Geelong Cup yesterday.
''This is a bit more my style,'' Huddy said as she waited for Gatewood to return in the mounting yard.
''It reminds me of home. Those big days we have a great time but it is not like this.
''I feel like I should be out the back helping with the horses.
''That was a good win, wasn't it? It will be good to have another runner in the [Melbourne] Cup.''
However, it is the Cox Plate that will be the focus for the remainder of the week. Shoot Out, a $15,000 buy as a yearling, has won four group 1s - all at Royal Randwick - for the Huddys but Linda remains realistic about his chances.
''[Shoot Out's trainer] Chris Waller has done a great job to get him this far because he is not the easiest horse to train,'' Huddy said.
''He has back problems, and Chris has had to nurse him along to get him here. It is great to get him back to the Cox Plate but if I could have a choice where this race was run, it would be Randwick over a mile, but that's not going to happen.''
It was over that course that Shoot Out won his latest group 1, the George Main Stakes, to start this preparation. He then finished midfield in the Epsom as the topweight three weeks ago.
''He is going into the race very fresh, and I don't think that is a bad thing because I think High Chaparrals [like Shoot Out] actually like racing that way,'' Huddy said.
''We are just hoping he runs well, and he is such an honest horse we know he will.''
Huddy, along with her husband Graham, probably races horses on more tracks than anyone else in the country.
Their maroon and gold diagonal striped silks with white sleeves are regularly seen in Mount Isa (where Huddy is club treasurer), Boulia and Cloncurry in north-west Queensland, but they have now made their way to Sydney and Melbourne.

Im going Ocean Park e/w but ….gotta settle on something with a bit of value, everytime I look at the guide I can change my mind.....great field

Bloke at work initially tipp southern speed for the punters club then left it out for a heap of first 4s instead....dicey

Missus got a tip today, R1/#1 R/hill...will be short

I just dont get why All Too Hard is paying so much more than Pierro….i know last start was run to suit but i think the same can happen here. I also believe All Too Hard nay hav turned a corner last start and will kick on from here.

Nash Rawiller slaughtered Piero last start - an awful ride… If he gets a good trip and that run didn't bottom him out he'll be a lot better.

Call me crazy if you will, but if Glass Harmonium jumps, he dictates the tempo of the race.

He could run a sneaky race here.

Thinking there will be a fair bit of give in the track after some rain last night combined with Friday Racing… More Joyous is my pick, but don't leave out Priosir. Of the lightweights, it will get the distance!

I got an email from one of its owners and he thinks it will win 😱pen_mouth:

I think Pierro will do what one of my favourite horses & his sire Lonhro couldn't do & win the Cox Plate. But more of a concern for me, apart from being up against a cracking field is as Yoss points out, how much the last run took out of him.

Pierro has too many question marks on whether it will run it out

Green Moon for mine

Any horse with Happy (Trails) in it name should be a chance also

Ethiopia - a real vaue bet at 20/1\. Will run over them if the pace is really on early.

There were a lot of people tipping Ethiopia earlier in the week. Great value at 20-1! Some good horses in it though. Will be tough to pick.
