The halves problem

The ideal scenario would be he has a week off, Jock and Latu light it up in the halves, and AD spends the rest of the year at right centre.
Honestly, I like AD at halfback. I don't think he has the agility or D to be a centre anymore. I don't even think he has the consistency to play lock. He is a 5/8 or halfback only IMO.

If he has trained at halfback all pre-season, I want consistency and unless he gives us a reason not to, have him as first choice all year.

He is a terrible halfback. Doesn't position the team to create good shape, has a rushed and average kicking game, struggles to play straight and create space for runners, and finally, he doesn't have the mindset for 7. IMO your halfback needs to get pleasure out of others taking the limelight. Someone who's purpose is to do subtle things that go unnoticed to some, but create opportunities for others. Its my belief AD is the one who wants the big plays, not the little subtle plays. Your 7 needs to be a 100% team player and Doueihi is not that. I can see him as a 6, but most definitely not a 7. In fact, out of all 17 clubs first choice 7, he is by far the worst.

Well if the replacement with their chance to stand up and guide the team around producers a win or shows superior form there's no way they should lose their spot when Adams fit.

Our halves were playing behind a pack that had plenty of go forward. Api had us hitting the Ad line and we certainly tried to play with patience. Neither AD or Luai ahd a good day out on Saturday;, but it isn't time to chuck it all in given that we put so much work into AD/Laui as a combiantion over the off season. With Luai injured there is an opportunity for Latu or Andrews to step up and take on the role with AD driving the ship.

So there were a couple of things that went astray on Saturday - we failed to recognise and take advantage of the way the Bunnies defended (which they did well). We continued to try and execute our game plan with a clear belief that with patience points would come. While frustrating we were still in the game until the end so it is not as if our game plan was poor. This is the positive for us - we stuck to the plan and for the most part were pretty patient.

What we didn't do was adjust the plan, when we realised that defensively souths were eating our attack. They had studied our play and didn't collapse their defence. They were very strong on the edges and Whighton in particular had a field day (because he was very close to offside on most defensive plays).

This is where our leadership was lacking and AD, in particular, was deficient as a half. We needed to identify the issue and work a solution. We were being pushed back inside, especially on the right edge. A simple kick or two, in behind Whighton early in a a couple of sets would have put him and the outside backs in two minds. This should have been the first step in creating time and space for our outside men on our right edge.

On the other side of the paddock we had some kids up against experience - they made a couple of poor defensive reads but for the most part held their own in attack - there just weren't many opportunities. Luai was not able to create due to the defensive resolve; but Trells edge was not "almost offside" every play so required a different solution. We certainly created enough opportunites but it was not to be - I'm sure that Big Mak and Luke learned a lot though and will be much better for the experience.

Overall, I think we lost the game in the halves; but the issue was with our leadership not with effort. We were not, for the most part, outplayed as individuals. Souths defensive plan nullified our attack and as a team we failed to react appropriately. On the field this is a bit about leadership and off the paddock a bit about coaching. My gut feel though is our leadership and coaching staff had belief in our system and expected that, with patience, results would come.

Game 2 of the season - lots of lessons identified. If we learn from them it is not a bad result!

Well the forecast for Aukland is rainy with a top of 21C. With a 6PM kick off our time it will be a tad cooler with temps in the high teens.

So yes a typical wet & wild Aukland, I just hope it isn't too windy, our boys seem averse to a windy game day.

Love it Jolls - sums up my thoughts much more articulately and comprehensively than I ever could.

Think having May and To'a out hurt us, as they are two who could break things open when playing the patience game. Although its possible Latrell and Wighton nullify them anyway.

No excuses for Doueihi and Luai though, the good ones just find a way.

And he played injured for the entire game on Saturday night. Was hurt early and it impacted his running ability, the late problem was a secondary injury.
When fit he’ll be the 7.

We should be playing Latu Fainu at halfback from this week & keeping him there as our long term half back.
Adam Doueihi is not a half back & he should be playing as a ball playing lock forward when Luai gets back. He hogs the ball too much to be a halfback and our fullback & outside backs are not getting the ball enough. Doueihi can play number six for this week if he’s available & Madden on the bench.
My team for this week
Bula
Turuva
Herbert (To’a if available)
Makasini
Tavana
Doueihi
L.Fainu
Twal
S.Fainu
Pearce Paul
May
Koroisau (c)
Hunt
Bench
Madden
S.Fainu
Afoa
Pole
Reserves
Skelton
Haywood

You mean that rushed and average kicking game where he kicked a near perfect cross field Torpedo kick for a try that gave us the lead against souths, and a damn near 40/20 that was only freakishly stopped by a brilliant Jye Gray? And converted goals at 100% ?

I don't know what game you watch but bagging out a halfback for wanting to execute big plays is pretty silly. That's like hating on a racehorse for being fast. If you want to enjoy watching someone play at 7 out of the "limelight" you have a decade's worth of vague, dull, beige Luke Brooks WT highlights to enjoy.

Ad's still got pace, pushed cowboys prop forwards backwards and down for a try in round 2, ran the ball out of our in goal in the same game to kick off a try scoring set... amongst others. He's a damn fine footy player, he knows where to run as a half at the defensive line. (Watch against the Bulldogs and Roosters last year.) but his best attribute is actually his growing combination with Luai. He's also the ideal guy you want to hold down the role in the squad while Latu gets up to speed which is the medium long term strategy anyways.... Settle down.
