The National Anthem

@Dan_Blanco yes they can because the use of that term has been bastardised and expanded to the point that it now lacks impact. People label each other that way these days upon simple disagreement.

@cochise you cant blame people for wanting a bit of escapism from constant browbeating over political issues. Its not malicious. We all have a long list of stuff to worry about. Constantly kowtowing to the demands of the same groups gets on peoples nerves.

I sincerely believe a lot of people voted yes to the gay marriage vote simply because they were sick to death of listening to the whining over it and it was just easier to vote yes so they would shut up and go away.

Because 2 guys not singing a song is browbeating? indigenous issue really don't get a lot of airtime in Australia and they only answered the question on if they were going to sing the anthem! I haven't seen them pushing this or making it a focus of the game. The media has run with it a little, but it has also been a fairly lackluster round of football!

@Kev who is they? The people campaigning for equal rights mate, or are you also homophobic

I find it strange equating a plebiscite where we literally were the last developed country to get it over and done with and even then wasn’t easy...

These are our Indigenous ancestors lol

Keep that in mind Kev, nobody is saying u haven’t been browbashed or can’t hv an opinion tho

More to the point we only see what the government wants us to see

@DieHarder I think I get the drift of your attempted argument which is saying something as your thoughts are pretty scattered. My point is not invalid as proven by this reply.

Just 1 more issue i have with this..... we have a lot of indigenous players in our sports in Aus... and they would all have many young children who would idolise them, now if they see their favourite player not singing the national anthem they might do the same

@cochise the footballers wont be the ones doing it, their combined IQ wont get the point across succinctly.
I listen mainly to the ABC. Aboriginal issues are usually front and center. They do get the airtime they deserve and public opinion has already pushed government into acting.

@Kev no mate, but you getting extremely butt hurt in response does prove a point.

Both my parents are high up in the employment chain for the ABC (which I apparently don’t listen to or don’t know about; according to ur reply) and have not been clearer with me about the distinct lack of an aboriginal culture or presence in the work place as well as lack of understanding.

The fact you’ve even brought politics/brow bashing into this argument is totally ridiculous - it’s not politically motivated at all - not now and not given it’s just two NRL players protesting... don’t like it then move on? Or campaign for change with the current regime and see how far that will get you. Please think before posting!

I think those other verses don’t represent any of us. They should use that as a focus if they want it changed.

I agree.

I think those verses change the tone and intended meaning of the song from the writers perspective and I can understand why people would not be happy to sing a song that original intention was far from inclusive!

Yep and nobody ever sings them anyway

I'm not all that interested on whether he sings or not. However i worked for remote area health services in Alice Springs for a number of years and had to visit most of the communities in Central Australia. What really impressed/surprised me was the genuine warmth and welcome i felt from the people in these communities. There was no bitching about "whitey" being there or the fact that they were being totally neglected in the services they needed. The biggest concern was the lack of respect for elders in communities and the fact that the young people weren't interested in the traditions and couldn't wait to get out to the big smoke.
I look at these type of issues of not singing and shake my head at what they are trying to achieve. I understand that many indigenous people are offended by the national anthem but it always comes across to me as PR stunt with no real substance to actually addressing the real issues that indigenous people face.

@DieHarder I have no doubt that they believe that. It doesnt make it true though despite their high level ranking.

@DieHarder of course it is. Open your eyes. Btw its 4 men, not that facts matter too much currently.

@Kev “I listen mainly to the ABC. Aboriginal issues are usually front and center” you said this and now claim i’m not speaking in facts on an opinion thread... tough crowd when the people in question have both been head of HR & radio 😂
So I’d say to you that telling me to open my eyes to what I see on the daily is not making it easier for me to sympathise with you. Maybe it’s in the way you were raised to be dismissive but don’t let any of this get in the way of your ludicrous argument which is that these FOUR players are / will be seen to be browbashing.

If you do not agree with what it is that they’re trying to achieve then again you need to educate yourself on why it’s only furthering division to pretend like the problems mentioned in OP’s post will fix these cracks all throughout society

You may only be speaking in general rugby league terms but the conversation’s being had by people much, much? More powerful than you or I

Cheers for a good debate though. Night.

@DieHarder for the record, I’m all for keeping the anthem same same but being much more inclusive (especially for our youth rugby league stars and elders that must be heard) and being open to having an actual independent flag of our own. Simples, you can’t say I’m wrong tbh

Maybe it’s a knee-jerk kinda thing but this topic comes around every single year and nothing seems to change for them - so why don’t we?

Ok. You havent debated anything and clearly didnt read any posts back past page 8 but thanks for the input.
