The Papenhuyzen decision...

Papenhuyzen was a Parra junior. Was Egan responsible for pinching him and bringing him to Tigers?

He was in the Balmain system since he was about 16...Parra before that. I think anything before 16 is impossible to tell. He excelled with us as a junior, something most people seem to forget.

Balmain SG Ball captain Ryan Papenhuyzen & star centre Moses Suli have claimed the major awards at the Balmain Tigers presentation night.
Despite just missing the semi-finals, an impressive year saw both Papenhuyzen & Suli graduate to the Wests Tigers NYC squad & shine on the bigger stage.

Fullback Papenhuyzen was awarded Best Back in the SG Ball squad, whilst also taking out the Scott Gale Leading Try Scorer Award with 6 tries and the Keith Barnes Leading Point Scorer Award with 32 points.

HE’S only 17 but is already carving out a reputation as a rugby league try scoring machine, crossing for a hat-trick on his debut for the Australian schoolboys against New Zealand.

Last night Balmain Tigers junior Ryan Papenhuyzen scored again — being named NewsLocal’s Junior Sports Star of 2015 after a stellar year when it seemed he couldn’t stop racking up tries.

He joins an illustrious roll-call of previous winners, many of whom have gone on to become household names in sport including kayaker Jessica Fox, footballer and cricketer Ellyse Perry, and discus thrower Dani Samuels.

Expanding the topic...let's look at the whole Kelly Egan 'era'.

I, and most of you, blame Cleary...but when you examine it, Egan is almost as much to blame.

Who let go Tevita Tatola, Nathan Brown?....we seem to let go champs and recruit chumps in their place....our recruitment and retention the last 8 years had been diabolical

As well as Taniela Paseka, didn't want him either.

I know its all the rage to assume that everything we do is rubbish, but Im not sure I'd have Paseka in our pack. Who would you leave out for him? I think he is potentially a better player than Garner i guess and the Huth but very different players. Paseka is high(ish) impact in small doses but low work rate.

....anyway...Tatola, Brown, Paseka, Papenhuyzen...if only we had a thread where we could ***lament*** all of these players being let go....

Have you watched Paseka lately? Dudes been killing it.

We have bad habit of letting go of young props who end up going good. Prop is a hard position to master most of them don’t start playing their best footy until they’re a bit older

IMO killing is pretty strong. I have watched quite a few games and I always watch for him and he has had some pretty good but short spells in a pack rotation with AFB & Tapau. Last week when he was needed to step up he went missing. Im not knocking him but he is a MASSIVE unit and sometimes these guys never really can fit into the pace required for NRL and can make a good run here and there but adding real value is harder.

Its only my opinion but Im not sure Id have him in our pack. Maybe on a par with Mikaele.

Probably add Reece Hoffman to that list pretty soon. Very [lamentable](https://weststigersforum.com/topic/30065/the-wests-tigers-lament-thread). Apparently its the curse of the ghost of Kelly Egan.

Paseka is a BIG UNIT but has a heart the size of a pea!
Hopefully the meat axe coming from the Eels knows how to use his mass!

One of the Club's finest decisions. Perhaps the best player in RL now?

I’ll take Cleary thanks. The best players usually have starting positions in origin.

Wouldn’t have surprised me if he was another Mullaney or Shannon McDonnell of he stayed with us.

What does this confirm about appointments of senior staff in the football dept at that time? Also for a club relying on juniors to get us to the top 8 and beyond, the development system during that period?

Look back further. Melbourne are the best club in the competition at developing players and have done so for years. It’s got nothing to do with recent coaching staff.

From memory they’ve signed 3 players from us: Paps, Korobete, JAC. All have improved massively when they left.

It could be the facilities, the location, the coaching staff, or they let them watch their favourite tv show before bed.

Agreed. The biggest issue is scouting and retention. We have a superstar in our own juniors and the best we can come up with is he is not worth retaining because he is suffering injury? Papenhuyzen is a player you build a team around!

Played for Kellyville and Hills Bulls. Grew up in Kellyville. My son was mates with him at school.

One of two Oakhill College boys playing first grade NRL at the moment. The other is Luke Keary. Not a bad pair.

Yeah my son knew Luke as well but he is a couple of years older. Oakhill have had pretty good sides for a few years now, particularly in Union. Good school.

Yeh, 3 of my 4 boys went there. The 4th didn't want to go because our 2nd didn't endear himself to the brothers and he thought his name would be mud before he even started. Was a bit of a wild child was our number 2.

Any of them Paps age?

No, the oldest finished in 1993 and the third finished in 2005, well before Pap went through. I think the youngest played rugby with Keiran Jack (Garry's son). Keiran was a pretty fair player I believe who could have gone on with it if he hadn't played AFL.

So, youre fourth son went to the local public high school?

No, he went to Gilroy College. Not as upmarket as Oakhill but a good school in its own right.

Funaki..what a unit..

Paps was an Oakhill college boy who excelled at union too, parra were disappointed he was with us in the first place. We were unlucky tedesco jetted us around if he had told us he was leaving we may have been able.to have kept Paps who knows

Exactly.......and in Paps own words it was always a dream to go to the Storms. But ....KellyEgan.....

This is a ridiculous thread. The whole original premise is wrong and therefore it morphed into "Well Kelly Egan was rubbish at his job generally". He might have been, but he is in a very long list of people who have done a rubbish job at the Tigers.

When Paps left, we had Jason Taylor as coach. He was complete rubbish and reportedly didnt have the respect of the players. Paps was also behind Tedesco. Paps also had always dreamed of going to play at the Storm....but its Egans fault?

What about Taylor, what was his contribution to Paps leaving? What about Taylors contribution to the Tigers being rubbish and struggling to attract quaility players. What about the clown who made the decision to appoint Taylor.

Its a ridiculous and simplistic view to blame one guy because he has the word retention on his business card. The club was a mess at that stage.
