I think with the cap raising from 7 mill to 11 mill in the next few years 700k would be the new norm for a marquee forward

Klemmer is 22 and Woodsy 24, I would love nothing more than a prop pairing of these two for the next 8 years or so

100% agree with you. It would be a bit silly paying overs for a prop given we are about to go into a season with a reduced interchange. Props like Tolman who can play big minutes are the ones we want.

It is quite possible that we might have a diamond in the rough in the signing of Rod Griffin from Ippy. I think he has got a reasonable motor and could be our best value signing if given game time.

Ohh Milky, you trying to reignite the Farah thread, I personally think you are right and a deal has been done to send him out with some dignity, not a foot up the clacker like JT tried, and he will finish up in the NRL this year.
But I could be wrong, I am wrong a lot, just ask my wife.

The cap's supposed to be going up as well, so the % chunk that they would take up would decrease in any case. And TPA's could reduce the cap hit. etc etc

I think the thing I like about Grant is he brings a little aggression to our front row. There's a bit of attitude there. He doesn't mind getting in the face of the opposition and I think our props have lacked that in recent years. I think that although our guys, Woodsy, Keith, Ava etc have played it tough they don't get as fired up as some e.g. Warea-Hargreaves, Thaiday, Klemmer. Not saying a team can't play well without this type of prop but I think to some extent our pack has been seen as a little soft by the opposition for a few years now. Pretty tough on their day but there hasn't been much to intimidate other packs. Ellis toughened them up a little when he was here and Tapau was explosive at times but I don't think there's been enough of that in our pack for some time. I think McConnachie might also provide similar bursts of energy during games like Grant when, and if, he gets used to the NRL. And Sauaso Sue has shown he can match it for toughness with anyone. These guys can bring an ättitude" to our front row that probably has been a little lacking for a few years now. If that is also reflected in the team's attitude to defence then it's a win win situation.

Good post ^^. We have been seen as the softest pack in the comp as far as physical intimidation goes for nearly a decade. Would love to see that change sometime soon, nothing beats seeing your team physically dominate the opposition. Put some fear into 'em.

Let's be fair to the bloke, he got dropped by Cleary the day he announced his signing at Souths (after being given permission to negotiate IIRC,) and he wasn't considered a first choice prop at Souths.

He will walk into our pack and start with Woods. He will have plenty of chances to return to the form that saw him selected for origin. We have long needed a mongrel in the pack, we had Gavet and Taupau but for whatever reasons they are gone.

For mine this is a very astute signing, we've let Taupau go to chase ridiculous money in a dawning era of reduced interchange, and picked a bloke up on the cheap with rep honours to his name, and in his prime who will do the longer minutes. Short of him chucking a Ryan O'Hara I can't see this going wrong.

Even with the signing of Ballin, I really believe this club has recruited very smart. We're still thin in the second row, but Lawrence was improving with every game he played and Sirro hopefully will pull his finger out this year (let's not forget these blokes played their whole careers in the backline,) it has left me cautiously optimistic for the year. Hopefully the playing group can leave their differences at the door and play good footy with each other.

The move for Grant to leave Penrith was purely financially motivated by the panthers, he was on a good contract with an incentive that kicked him into very big money for a prop, hence they moved him on.

The decision not to play him was purely for development reasons, they didn't think they could win it (despite almost doing so) and thought that getting Lattimore experience was worth more than the gap in their output.

There was no attitude or performance issues, just footy club business.

At Souths Im led to believe that Maguire was not comfortable playing Grant and the Burgess twins in the same side, as he thought all of them were just slightly less mobile than desired and although individually this was fine, all 3 of them was considered a risk. Hence they went Tyrell.

Yeah I was aware of the reasons at Penrith Goose. I hear the odd person make the claim that he got dropped at Penrith and they seem to insinuate that it was due to performance which is not true.

Tim Grant is a like-for-like replacement for Keify and younger. Both are fringe Origin players and are big, tall, lanky and aggressive. Interestingly, Keify and Grant had similar stats for 2015 season as detailed respectively:

Avg Tackles per match: 23
Avg Hit ups per match: 10 & 11
Avg metres made per hit up: 10 & 11

Taupau seems to fall into category 2\. Pretty much all p%#% and wind and winking at himself in the mirror. When Nuasala shoved Sue in the move at Leichhardt last season big Marty just stood right there and didn't do a thing. Neither did Sue unfortunately.
