The repeating pattern...

Woke up this morning and saw "Dragon's skipper signs four year deal with new club" and, I must admit, I punched the air a bit with joy...presumed it was us...sat down, made a coffee to enjoy with the 'good news'...

And then realised he has joined, of all teams, Cronulla...

To compound it...to play 13 for them.

There is a fairly established pattern of rep / elite level players "meeting with Madge" a month or two prior, "sitting on" an offer from us...being heavily linked with us as the only suitor...

And then signing elsewhere the moment another team comes in for them...

It deserves discussion. We have been able to land some good youngsters, and been able to land several misfits / last chance type players...

**But we have not been able to land that 24-28 yo in their prime elite level player / NSW Origin level player basically ever since we were formed.**

This one stings a bit as he would have been perfect at 13 for us / has all the traits we need / has a relationship prior with Madge...and, worst of all, Cronulla are a mess with most of their best players about to file for pensions. Yet he still chose them over us.

Why exactly deserves discussion...

We just signed TWO 24-28 year old origin players, and a grand final captain.

I must say 4 years at $500k seems like a steal, you would think Tigers could at least match that. There must be more to it.

NSW level...with all respect, QLD players often get there based on very little. Joe O is not considered an 'Origin level' player / was unwanted by his club.

JTJ was just cut by his club...

Both will be good signings IMO...but they are not "current / elite level rep players".

Yes, for the money involved and given we have tons of cap room for 2022...he looked like exactly the type of player we actually could land.

I am honestly shocked he chose Cronulla. You would have to think he will be released, as there is no way you can captain St George after signing for the Sharks. They hate each other.

Cronulla probably signed him as a hooker, whereas we would have wanted him as a lock. He wants to play hooker, therefore we were not an option. Case closed.

TBF I'm not sure Tigers even offered him a contract. He was seen meeting with Madge however they're old mates too.

I do agree with you though the Tigers seem to forever be linked to every decent player on the market, they meet with the club then..........next min sign with someone else for often much less that Tigers offered. Even now when the club is finally turning a corner roster wise, these sort of players continue to steer clear.

Cronulla have Brailey who they've publicly backed as their 9. Reported McInnis was signed with the intentions to play lock.

It may have been us who decided not to pursue.

Yah hope it was us coming to our senses.

Would have been a terrible, unnecessary signing. Stoked we 'missed' out.

He has apparently gone there as a 13.

The Sharks current hooker (Brailey) is considered one of their best prospects in years, so I really doubt McIness plays 9 for them.

Well I thought if he was the leave the Dragons that he would come here
Feels like a bit of a kick in the guts
But I also feel it probably comes down to $
Madge gave McInnes his start in Nrl and you would think that would have had a little sway
Not to be
Next target ?

I think we have done well, and the players you mentioned i wanted to go elswhere or in the case of mc did not see the value.People forget that many clubs are after these players, and it is not just us that did not sign them.

Moh...you don't think we need:
A 13?
A player who can make 50 plus tackles a game / extremely high ratio of made tackles?
Fearless?
Warrior mentality?
Mobile enough to cover the field and balance our bigger, less mobile, pack?

That is **exactly** what we need.

Wouldn't go that far, though in the not fussed pile it goes.

I feel the days of giant locks are gone with the speed of the game now. Cam Murray, Jai Arrow, Jake Turbo are all mobile, athletic locks with a bit of ball play and can tackle the house down. McInnis is 100% in this mould and would have been perfect. That's not even factoring his competitive nature and hard work ethic.

I'm usually one of the first to stick the boot in but there was no indication we'd even made an offer. He's a good player and I think $500k is a good deal but maybe we're pursuing someone better for that position. We have a stack of money for 2022.

Yeah, almost seems like he went to the sharpies out of spite. This is a strange one, also I think that $500k is a slothfield number so who knows what the final figure actually is.
If true that he will play 13, and is only getting $500k a year, I think we stuffed up. Although, I can't really see him continuing to make 50 tackles a game for 4 years without missing some game time, his body has held up well for now, but injuries are probably just around the corner.

For 3 yrs maybe, but 4 no way for a 27yr old small lock who has done a lot of hard yards.Yes he's a good footballer, but so were Packer,JR,and mbye,we bought them on the downslide and thats why we ruined our roster.I think we can do better.
