But we have not been able to land that 24-28 yo in their prime elite level player / NSW Origin level player basically ever since we were formed.

We just signed TWO 24-28 year old origin players, and a grand final captain.

NSW level...with all respect, QLD players often get there based on very little. Joe O is not considered an 'Origin level' player / was unwanted by his club.

JTJ was just cut by his club...

Both will be good signings IMO...but they are not "current / elite level rep players".

McInnes isnt NSW or Qld Level. Wouldnt get picked over Grant in Qld and Cook will get the nod before him in NSW. Good player but he is as much a "current / elite level rep player" as Joe O or JTJ.

Are we forgetting the jet wore the blue jersey ? Not the maroon ? You get an origin jersey you can’t call it token . Just because someone seems that side weak , doesn’t mean it actually is . Last year is a case in point . Qld won the series with thier B team. What does that say . Probably not much , outside of at any point anyone can be the best or worst in thier position , a lot of the value we place on some players , is purely reputation and bums on seats. In last years nsw team there’s not one player who played , who will go down as a top 20 all timer . But we make out like they’re all the greatest ever . It’s a bit weird how recency bias can change the way you think.

I agree with you and I think we may be arguing the same point, also I am specifically saying that McInnes is by definition, not at that elite level.

We have done a great job in recruitment over the last few months considering we are a team that has missed the finals for like 10 years, 4 home grounds and players so called wanting out, etc.. Having said that I think the only way we will recruit a SOO quality player in his prime without over paying is to win games and make finals.
I truly believe if we were to make the finals this year and the COE coming we will get them.

Woke up this morning and saw "Dragon's skipper signs four year deal with new club" and, I must admit, I punched the air a bit with joy...presumed it was us...sat down, made a coffee to enjoy with the 'good news'...

And then realised he has joined, of all teams, Cronulla...

To compound it...to play 13 for them.

There is a fairly established pattern of rep / elite level players "meeting with Madge" a month or two prior, "sitting on" an offer from us...being heavily linked with us as the only suitor...

And then signing elsewhere the moment another team comes in for them...

It deserves discussion. We have been able to land some good youngsters, and been able to land several misfits / last chance type players...

**But we have not been able to land that 24-28 yo in their prime elite level player / NSW Origin level player basically ever since we were formed.**

This one stings a bit as he would have been perfect at 13 for us / has all the traits we need / has a relationship prior with Madge...and, worst of all, Cronulla are a mess with most of their best players about to file for pensions. Yet he still chose them over us.

Why exactly deserves discussion...
LM
JAC
McIness

He lives in Thirroul / Bulli man , from what I was told . It’s a crap drive through the guts of Sydney to get to Tigers training . It’s a 45 min slip up the Princes Highway to The Boulevarde , then a straight shot to shark park .
It’s a huge difference .

This might be the reason.

I agree with this thread in that I reckon we need a 9/13 plus we only need top tier talent right now. I think McInnis and B Smith fit the bill.

The thing is I like the way the club is building now. We don't seem to be paying overs which to me makes a massive difference over the next 3-5 years. We also to me now have a team with less weaknesses than what we've had in the past. I basically trust the club to make the right decisions.

I'm pretty cool with the way things are heading so missing out on this signing is not that bad. Personally I think Latrell is our biggest missed signing. I know he can be all over the place but at his best he would be one if not the most dangerous player in the game. Fullback is also at this point our weakest position.

I do that drive for work occasionally , and I absolutely dread going into the guts of Sydney in the morning . The Hume Highway / Homebush bay drive , Stacey st , section is beyond horrendous . I wouldn’t want to do that every day. Ans then still have to drive another 20 mins through Burwood . That’s not fun .

Yep I know , I was just adding my 2 cents . Probably not needed really lol

The biggest answer to Ellery's point will be season's end ...if we don't come away with a Top 2 player in his position , a Top 5 player in his position and a Top 8 player in his position ...recruitment has failed and Madge needs to come under question as well

Well if we finish Top 8 it actually makes it worse ...we can't attract talent when we do perform ......

Isnt the performance the goal? Id actually prefer to be able to perform without having to sign established "elites", It suggest that is actually the holy grail or the "Melbourne Method". If we perform, our players become stars.

They will need help to get us over the line ...win a premiership

This current squad won't win a premiership

TBF if you look at our 2005 Premiership winning team it was pretty average really. Our spine was solid but the rest of the team was in no way at all flush with stars.

Moh…you don’t think we need:
A 13?
A player who can make 50 plus tackles a game / extremely high ratio of made tackles?
Fearless?
Warrior mentality?
Mobile enough to cover the field and balance our bigger, less mobile, pack?
That is exactly what we need.

Sounds like Elijah Taylor

In hindsight our spine was solid but at the time it was untested with Robbie and Benji unknowns.

The point being there were no "elites" purchased to get us to that level.

Not answering on behalf of Jai, but did you think we were a chance at the title in Feb 2005?

(I'd be happy to scrape into 8th on F/A to answer your question to Jai).

The Wests Tigers need the right guy to come here first and join a club that has "Never give up No nonsense" club culture.

A few good wins in 2021 will make all the difference in our recruitment

I hope this pattern keeps repeating. Madge leaves no stone unturned and we don’t offer big contracts to anyone that’s not a proven origin or international player. Keep building the squad. At some stage the youth will come through and players will join a side that is a finals squad. It’s a long road but the only way.
