I think we had coaches like JT and Storm had Bellamy and a good team of assistants and professionalism. It's fair enough to think players would be better off in the Storm system than where we have been since Sheens. Hopefully it's different now under Madge and his team he is forming ??

I agree but we have brought through to grade some very good players. And the Papenhuyzen injury issue, think about Tedesco and his run of serious knee injuries. Why the difference in treatment?

Because the club was invested in Teddy, same can't be said for paps

So the Club couldn't manage the two or, are you suggesting the Club knew Papenhuyzen was a genuine NRL and higher player at that time?

No just like Melbourne and 14 other clubs, the Wests Tigers didn't see him developing into the player he is now. That happens mate, in all sports, I wish we kept him, but we didn't and there wasn't any uproar when he left, so I'd suggest most fans thought the same.

Why do people keep using Ponga as a recruitment example? I believe he is a poor example. This guy is a rocks and diamonds player. If he was playing for the Weststigers? People would be complaining we’re not getting value for money, which would be a fair call. He is no Slater, Teddy or Turbo. However, receiving excellent money for his age & experience. Credit for him playing NRL though. Go Weststigers!

We have our own story with outstanding fullbacks. The Club had no problems producing them but in the past there have been very real issues concerning those the Club put its faith in to come up with the correct retention decisions.

The elephant in the room is Papenhuyzen as his star continues to rise and it is likely he is SOO bound this year. Imo, he is Slater like but faster and an affable character to boot. WTs needs to own this retention disaster to learn and move ahead. We wouldn't have been in a position to have to recruit if we'd had the right people making the correct retention decisions at the time. I'm glad Hartigan is at the Club to guide our recruitment and retention decisions.

15 clubs knocked back the chance to sign him around 18 months ago. The Storm got lucky.

And that's the narrative which will keep us at the bottom. He was our junior, we supposedly knew him and failed.

I guess so did Melbourne considering he was 3rd in line when Slater retired. Rewrite history all you like.

Storm were trying to offload Paps at the start of last season.
They didn’t realise how good he was going to turn out.

My point exactly. Sometimes players turn out better than expected. In the NFL team picked 198 players before Tom Brady was drafted and he is the most successful QB of all time.

Great point.....

In MLB a player called Mike Piazza was drafted at #1390 and made the hall of fame.....

Despite what the scouts and stats say, sometimes these things just happen.....how many #1 picks or top rated players bust??? Loads

Our posts are almost identical using different examples. Shows exactly what we are talking about.

It happens to every club, a junior that gets stuck behind others or passed up on that goes on to do great things elsewhere. Bennett famously passed up on Thurston, the Bulldogs backed Brent Sherwin over him, and we all know what he went on to do.

Have we gone back to Papenhuyzen again? Build a bridge.

I bet the same people talking about him also spend a lot of time chasing their own past ex girlfriends/boyfriends too.

Isn’t there 500 other threads to talk about Paps lol

Yes it is the "Lament" thread.

Tired of the Paps story hijacking this and some other threads.

Would Pap be as good as he is if he never left Tigers? I do wonder.

This inferiority mindset is a concern, Where does it come from?

Not making finals for nine years and our inability to sign top quality players just might have something to do with it.
As always missed it by that much

It's up to Maguire and Co to get on top of this issue. One surety, Sheens was known as the recruiter for a reason and had the eye to identify talent.

No mate - it is a place for people who can't get over previous issues and want to
flog a dead horse to the point even it's bones are dust and have blown away.

However they are still bashing the ground with a stick.

Thanks Geo, now it is not answering the post above.

Glad to help

Can we stick to the topic please. I come here to read about signings, potential signings, rumours, anything remotely like that. I don't want to read pages of dribble over Papenhuyzen unless someone is suggesting he is coming back.

Maybe read the title again mate

Thanks, it does look dodgy now, they just moved this over. I typed this message in the signings and rumours thread.

All good.

If only we had kept Trent Robinson for another 299 games as a player ..he'd be our coach

if only we had identified Wayne bennet in his early stages of his career

I watched Bennett as a player growing up as a young kid ...slowest winger ever ...and he coached against my Uncle at Colts level for the Police Academy ...used to be some wild old games in those days
