This is Just the Beginning

Yes it is only round 5 and anything can happen from here BUT last year we were 6 wins outside the top 8.Storm Roosters Parra beat us whilst we have improved and the same can be said for Warriors Saints and Knights our boys should now have the confidence that others teams will have to lift to get the two points against us and we are more competitive than ever.

This early run is incredible and given we probably won't have anyone go missing during the rep period this season, things are looking up there as well. It's really important that we win the games against the lower teams this season.

Can anyone, including old Magpie and Tiger fans remember a time when the team had the best defense in the competition?

To my knowledge - Never!
Usually we are close to the worst.

IC has given this team belief and we now are gaining respect from other club's supporters.

All the negatives news about Taylor and the so called big 4 is no longer and issue.

Love all the positive news stories this year.

Will not lose any players to SOO so big plus this year.

I dont even think Warren Ryan ever had the best defence after 5 rounds

The bit I like is that our attack hasn't been as flash, while our defense has been very gritty.

With Brooks, Marshall, MWZ and Kevie. I reckon in 1 week of training we could boost our attack by an extra try per match.

We got grit and if a team lets their guard down WE GOT GAME!

Believe the 1980 Wests team was the best defensive team if not 78\. 1963\. But that's over the year.

The Magpies, under Roy Masters, were an intimidating side and they built their defence on it. They had their defensive systems but it was mainly based on making the opposition wary about running at them. Coat hangers and punches were more or less acceptable back then.

I read somewhere (so this is 2nd hand and may or may not be true but it's a good yarn anyway) that in Steve Mortimer's book, when he played his first game against the Magpies, he made a break and was eventually tackled by a Magpies forward who said to him, words to the effect, "If you run again, I'll effing kill you!" Apparently, Mortimer didn't run again.

If we'd played the way we have and been 1-5 I'd actually still be fairly happy.
If my team is playing tough, hard football as a TEAM and giving their all then win, lose or draw I'm a happy fan. If they are playing flashy, cavalier football then it's great when they win but whenever they lose (which is more often than not) I think - I wish they were tougher, I wish they played harder, I wish they played with heart.
As it is they are playing tough as teak and winning - it doesn;t get any better
VERY happy fan.

Good post. This is all i wanted this year. Guys having a red hot go and hopefully being competitive every match. They've done that and more.

I second that!! :sign:

Funny thing is our defence to me still looks like a work in progress, it doesnt look like a finished product…im not saying Im not happy with it but I think it looks like theres room for improvement....it still looks a bit hectic at times, compared to some of the really good composed defensive teams Ive seen before - I think it can get better.
Add ET - we all know what he brings, and the passion & attitude Grub will add as well...it can only improve.
Its good for my health too, im very calm watching oppositions NOT break our line
