@GNR4LIFE Because Heaven and Hell has absolutely nothing to do with Christianity, right?

I will think twice next time about mentioning theology in a thread about religion.

Prayer is like masterbation, it does nothing for the person being thought of. It only makes the person doing it feel better

People have superstitions whatever it may be ...no different

Do you sit in the same lounge chair at home when you watch the Tigers play .....drink from the same coffee cup , use the same stubby cooler .....etc etc etc

Only have one lounge chair where I watch from so yes, but not because of superstition.
Don't drink coffee
Mostly use my Tigers stubby cooler because....well I love it, not because of superstition.
And I've never prayed for a Tigers win because prayer has the same statistical chance as no prayer or random chance.

Roll a dice a hundred times and pray for a six, write down how many sixes you got.
Roll it again and don't pray, write down how many sixes.

Superstition ain't the way

Your superstitious ...why not use any stubby cooler

What's the difference between superstition and religion .......

I think there comes a point when you can bail out on your suspicions - and superstitions, religion is final... and people (AS A WHOLE, in this day ‘n age) just cannot accept that. Tbh.

Fear mongering will only make Atheists resist even more. If your only reason for believing is out of fear that you might be struck down in the after life, then that's weak and it would be hard to live a meaningful life. The sad truth is, that would be the reason why millions of people ARE believers, because of the possible consequences for not believing. And given how mighty God is, surely he'd be able to see the difference between genuine faith, and faith out of fear, so why bother trying to fool Him?

Wait. what....If you don't believe in God you wont go to heaven and live for eternity..?

That God seems pretty discriminatory..

Billions upon billions of dollars and then some.

I can choose a religion that is free

We wake every morning and have a million habits we follow through every day

Why ....who knows

Does it matter whether we believe in a God or not

Does it make you a stronger or weaker individual

Be a morally better person if you believe in God or not

Make you more acceptable socially if you believe in God

Would you divorce your wife if she /he found God or stop being friends with someone if you found out they had joined a religion you didn't agree with ......

Why do you need to prove or disprove anything ....if you believe in God good luck with that and if don't....oh well nothing changes

You should be aiming to be a good human either way...is it that hard

And the same could be said about Political Parties .......how many sports supporters have been killed because of who they support ....where do you draw a line

What a rubbish comment, organised religion has actively tried to cover up disgusting behaviour by its members. The Catholic church was moving priests from one church to another to hide their sins. The highest member of that church in this country now lives in a cell. Guess what he is still an ordained member of that church.

The Communist Party has killed how many people .......

And guess what? I don't support the Communist Party either so I am not sure what your point is apart from other organisations are morally bankrupt too so its ok that religion is.

@GNR4LIFE Its not fear mongering though. Its the central theme of Christianity, that there will be an ultimate judgement. If you ever read the New Testament, its pretty much on every page in some form or another.

And my reason for believing in Christ is not out of fear. Its because i firmly believe it to be true. I am a huge sceptic by nature, so underlying truth is something that i hold up as being very important.

And anyway, I quite honestly don't think many people believe in God out of fear, that sort of 'belief' would wear off after a while and couldn't be sustained for long.

True faith changes your life. I know that sounds like the ultimate cliche, but it honestly does. Fear doesn't play a role in that, i can promise you.

And not to labor the point, but if your an Atheist, you don't believe in any after life, heaven or hell, or any sort of judgement anyway. So why would the mention of Heaven or Hell scare you or be a cause for discomfort?

What not exactly true?

"You do realise atheists arent making a positive claim, dont you?"

Some atheists are making a positive claim - of the non-existence of any god. First two paragraphs of what originally I wrote.

You do realise atheists arent making a positive claim, dont you? The position of Atheism isnt a positive claim, its a rejection of your claim that a god exists. Atheists are not saying there is no god, **you can have subgroups of hard atheists or anti-theists that do make claims that there is no god, and yes, they would then have to provide evidence to prove their claim of no god exists**, however, Atheists in general are saying “you are asserting something exists prove it otherwise i dont believe your claim”

Like how i mentioned it, so whats not exactly true?

I apologise, I must have misread that first time around.

I wonder what the ratio of what you called "hard atheists" vs general atheists is? Certainly, amongst prominent atheist commentators (Hitchens, Harris, Dawkins, Ricky Gervais), they all come across as hard atheists. Most of the atheists I know are fairly anti-religion and definite about their being no god.
